Firstly let me say I am a big fan of the Final Fantasy series (well I was until X-2 came out anyway!) and I can see the merits for companies releasing sequels to milk more money but are you lot bored of it and want something more original??

Looking at the highly anticipated games for the PS3....Final Fantasy 13, Tekken 6, MGS4, DMC4....I know Sony want to encourage loyalty through these games but don't gamers want to see new franchises? Thank god for things like Heavenly Sword and Lair for the PS3.

The 360 seems to be doing well this time round with a decent range of games but they too seem to have a lot of sequels!

Your thoughts?

If you hate sequels then stay the hell away from Nintendo.

Sony are almost as bad after milking R&C almost dry last time around. And FFXIII, need I say more.

MS have new IPs galore this time, with Assassins Creed, BioShock, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Gears of War, Vivá Pinata etc.

They are proven franchises that almost guarantee revenue. New IPs are risky, take more advertising revenue, and even if the game is great (Psychonauts), it could still struggle to find a new audience.
While new IPs are neccessary, its getting less common to see a publisher roll the dice on an unproven francise, unless the developers are proven developers (Gears) or the game has developed some kind of hype.
That, more-so than hype, is why I think MS packed the Halo 3 beta in with Crackdown. It was a new development team and a new IP, so by sticking the beta in there, it instantly added hype, advertising, and got the game a sizable base.
I expect more things like betas, free demos, etc to steadily become the norm when dealing with new IPs.

Need I remind you that every Final Fantasy is completely different, and they always try to innovate things about the game. FFXII had a great new gameplay system. The series sells millions, don't fix it if it ain't broken. Do you not see the new original IPs like Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, and Lair? You have variety, don't discredit what you don't want. Credit what you will get.

I love sequels. I don't see what's bad about it. And Halo 3 (aka THE awaited 360 game) is a sequel. SEQUELS ARE FUN

there is nothing wrong with sequals...as long as they are made well ......I really don;t know why FF X-2 get's ripped on...any real FF fan knows that the gameplay was probably some of the best seen on a FF game in years....the story was lacking sure...but the game itself was incredible.....too bad most FF fans are nothing more than CGi and drama fans.......

I still don't know what happend there.
Why is that a game like 25 to life sells like hot cakes but games like Psychonauts/Strangers Wrath etc.
have to struggle? Damn those casuals. Damn them straight to hell!!!
