I'm going to keep this as concise as possible because I've noticed lately a fear of large posts in System Wars...
Im' not a fanboy, I own all 3 consoles, usual non-fanboy disclaimer ramble.
Anyway, can someone SERIOUSLY explain exactly what is remotely half-decent about wii music? Wii sports hit such a spot with gamers because motion sensitivity and casual sports games had never come together, and definitely not in such an accessible and immediate manner.
However, peripherals and music games, they've been around plenty-long! What's more, Wii music is massively behind it's already fairly dated competiion in three major areas:
1) THE MUSIC - Talk about disappointing - simple, limited tunes which sound almost midi-esque in quality. This is NOT the licensed, high quality music which can appear sporadically (or even frequently, depending on your taste) in titles such as guitar hero, rock band etc. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE orchestrated music as much as anybody, particularly orchestrated videogame music, I think some of the works of the likes of Uematsu and other videogame composers are some of the finest pieces of music I've ever listened to, but seriously, the quality of the audio they demonstrated at E3 was shockingly poor. Yes, it's work in progress, yes it can be to do with the skills of the players, but even so, it was laboured, poor-quality noise in my opinion. And yes, Im' aware it was a mario piece, I'm not attacking that fine, cheery piece of music, but rather it's iteration in wii music and the choice/quality of music they are opting for this game.
2) THE PERIPHERALS - Yes, wii sports was great because of motion sensing and the like. But guess what? I can't see the wii-mote being more alike an instrument than the ones found in games like guitar hero, rock band etc. It's a general, non-specific point, that the wii-mote is about as much like a guitar as a soddin collinder. I know, there's instruments like flutes and drumsticks and what-not, but generally the public have very favourably and commercially reacted to accessories for music games that are actually like the instruments themselves. Nintendo have just gone 'lets move the wii casual behemoth down into this market and make it second-rate but cheap so everyone will think it's amazing'. Seriously, for the first time Nintendo have moved into an area of the market where their peripherals are below the standard expected and used.
3) ACCESSIBILITY - For wii sports and the like, the wiimote was the best type of accessory avaialble for it. For music games, I seriously think they've dropped their game. I also can't see how the motions and the like I saw displayed at e3 are easier and more accessible than the tried, tested and loved colour coding of guitar hero or any rock band equivalent.
I hope Wii music fails... hard. That may sound unnecessarily harsh but with Wii Sports we had strong evolution and a fair bit of innovation (not as much as hyped but still). Wii fit was a bit predictable and yet another accessory but still was an interesting, useful and somewhat unique entity. With wii music, Nintendo have just plain ran out of ideas and encroached on one of the few big casual game areas which they weren't dominating in. Whatsmore, they've done a lousy and complacent job in getting in there. I just hope they fail big time with this (blind fanboyism and cheap prices will probably mean they won't) so they get a kick up the backside and start making some top knotch games which use what we've already bloody spent money on with our wii's and not keep making us buy add-ons/clip-ons/extra bathroom scales or implementing the existing control scheme exclusively into a load of casual, ported trite.
