"Don't get too excited. A 'third' Shenmue game has been announced in Japan, though those hoping for a fully-fledged new instalment will be disappointed to hear that it's a PC based social games service in Japan.

Shenmue Citywas announced by Yahoo! Japan and DeNa for its new Yahoo! Mobage service (spotted and translated byandriasang), released today in Japan.

There are few details about the game beyond a Winter release date – and although the official release touts it as the 'third entry' in the series it's unlikely to be the game that fans of the Dreamcast originals were hoping for.

The Shenmue series has previously flirted with the MMO space with Shenmue Online, a PC game announced in 2004 that never saw the light of day.

Sega are taking the piss now. Shenmue 2 is one of my all time favorite games, and has a huge cult following.

FFS stop dicking around and give us what we want.

if heavy rain sold 1.5mil

im sure a multiplat version of shenmue 3 could do at least 2million

the budget would be big tho...

they should of just finshed shenmue with 2, instead of a cliffhanger

I'm a bit more optimistic. If this is successful, Shenume 3 will be a definite possibility. Last we heard, Sega wasn't even thinking about a third one because the first two were financial failures. It's good to know they're willing to try this.

Sega can't afford to do that. If you'll recall, Shenmue was too ambitious (huge budget) but underwhelmed gamers when it finally came out. Now they're gun-shy even though diehard fans (the few that exist) want more.

Well, they´ve stated recently that if anyone(sony/ms/ninty)would finance the game that they would do it,but considering the cost/revenue that a game like Shenmue has,it´s understandable that they wouldn´t want to do it.

Still,I hope this game is sucessfull so that we can finally see Shenmue 3,but I´m not getting my hopes up.

Besides,after 9 years in a cave,Ryo and Shenhua are probably dead now.:P

Honestly, that was my first thought. This is the best we can hope for (traditional Shenmue fans).

No actually I would rather have nothing. I don't know why they insist on turning this epic niche franchise into a casual online game. It's beyond me Sega.

Yeah, but this time they're not tied down to making it an exclusive for poor performing hardware (god bless you, Dreamcast). Personally, I would love to see a shenmue reboot with modern graphics and all the chapters including the never released Shenmue 3, which should this time close the story instead of the 14 chapter epic that Yu Suzuki had planned. Make it an epic, fix some the odd controls, hell recycle the voice overs from the previous games... anything. I don't know the answers, but the series has an awful lot of potential. As a poster above me said, if Heavy Rain can sell 1.5 mil on the PS3 alone, then Shenmue can work financially. It was way ahead of it's time, in regards to cinematic gaming anyway. Maybe this time it can be truly appreciated by the masses as the amazing game it deserves to be.

What about Shenume 2?

That was a DC game with a late Xbox port. The Xbox was a console for PC games before PC games became mass market with the current generation, and a low selling console at that. That, plus the fact that Shenmue 1 wasn't released on the Xbox hurt it badly. If Sega had released a Shenmue 1&2 package on PS2, I believe that we would have been blessed with a conclusion to the story. Porting S2 to the Xbox only was just dumb.

I'm sure if its successful commercially, it could lead to a third game.

I think the Xbox port was the most convenient. Recall that the OS of the Dreamcast was Windows-CE-based. Not only that, the PS2 was a bear to code compared to the well-recognized CPU and GPU combination in the Xbox. If you had a tight budget and had to do a quick-and-dirty port, where would you go?
