REDWOOD CITY, Calif. & ZURICH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--EA SPORTS, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) have announced an extension of their existing licensing agreement until December 31, 2022.

Under the terms of the agreement, EA SPORTS maintains exclusive rights to release FIFA-branded action and management videogames. In addition, EA SPORTS also holds exclusive rights to release the official FIFA World Cup videogame, as well as retaining its status as a Presenting Partner of the FIFA Interactive World Cup.

EA SPORTS released the first FIFA-branded soccer game in 1993, and 20 years later our partnership with FIFA continues to be very strong, said Andrew Wilson, Executive Vice President and Head of EA SPORTS. Our franchise has become the benchmark for quality and innovation in the sports videogame genre, and we look forward to many more years of connecting with consumers around the world with our games carrying the prestigious FIFA name.

Our relationship with EA SPORTS is of high importance to FIFA, said Jérôme Valcke, FIFA Secretary General. The FIFA videogames are a key experiential component in our work to communicate the FIFA brand and its values all over the world. This is highlighted by the 2.5 million football fans that have competed in this years FIFA Interactive World Cup, which is just one example of the power of our partnership with EA.

The EA SPORTS FIFA franchise, the most critically acclaimed sports videogame franchise in the world, continues to drive record consumer engagement with over 65 million games played weekly.

It shows it as a platform, but well see. http://uk.gamespot.com/fifa-14/ then there is this: No next-gen support was confirmed, but EA says it will reveal FIFA 14 for additional platforms "in the months ahead."

Who cares? Even the sports game fans don't really care who owns what. They're not that much into gaming.
The licensing costs are ridiculous anyway. If they want to make a soccer game for gamers, it wouldn't have licensed names to begin with because it ups the required budget immensely.
You'd rather see them focus on making a good game.

Disappointing. I am sure people in the UK would like a Premier League game. I know a lot of people I talk to at the Portland games want an MLS game. Real stadiums, chants...the whole works. EA just throws as many teams as possible without giving them any team specific personality and uses the same boring ass stadiums and presentation. And that is not how MLS soccer is. It would be nice if specific countries would get a version based off of their league.

Pretty sure the Fifa games include nearly all the European leagues including the Barclay's Premier League as well as detailed stadiums of nearly all the top teams.

The few Stadiums I see are European Stadiums. Where are the stadiums for the MLS? Where are the Mexican League Stadiums? Like I said, they focus on getting as many teams as possible but none of the leagues in the game have any league specific atmosphere. MLS is nothing like the Premier League. I would be willing to buy $10 DLC for the MLS stadiums and commentators. FIFA still has no Rocky Mountain Showdown Cup or Cascadia Cup. It makes the game feel generic. I wish each league got the same care in the FIFA games as the World Cup games get.

The MLS hasn't got the following. EA is catering to the larger market.

No they arent, the 'exclusivity' is on the FIFA name and the tournament the association runs

one of those games I fail to see the appeal of and I'm English, land of football hooligans and spousal abusers aka Fifa fans, J/K J/K, no seriously why wouldn't EA do this? its sells gang busters every year and development cost become fractional after the first iteration, its like securing a paycheck for the next 9 years.

Football here in England is a religion. People eat, breathe and sleep the sport. Not myself though as prefer BJJ / MMA.

I actually liked Fifa for the past two years. Some good ideas and great gameplay. But with the latest announcements they want to attract CoD crowd got me worried.

EA is going to continue to outbid everyone in these major sports franchise licensing deals. Developers and publishers need to get creative and develop franchises that involved fictitious leagues that gamers can grow attached to. I hope one day developers and publishers can take that risk. I'm not one of those EA is evil kind of critics, but their dominance in acquiring licensing rights to sports franchises is limiting the types of sports games we get base on major sports franchises. Personally, I could care less for these licensed franchises. I'd welcome something independent of such. For starters it might be able to kill the exploitation of annual release of major sports games. And publishers can be attracted by not having to ante up for those licensing rights.

Don't really see any issue with this, Madden on the other hand is the main concern.
