I think thats what most games nowadays is lacking, most games that I finished playing this gen doesnt give me that satisfaction level unlike games before, I played demons souls and I just realized how we're being spoiled too much with the easy games this gen, one of the reasons demons souls got me hooked because of its difficulty even though the story is kinda meh, and dont say "just play it on hard mode" because its different thing

Nowadays all the developers are talking about "accessibility to accomodate the casual players", so I doubt your wish will come true. Not to the majority of upcoming games at least.

Depends. I personally like difficult games but a lot of my friends would cry on "Hurt Me Plenty" for Doom while I can do it with my eyes closed. If you bring back the difficulty for those of us who like it you also have to make a lower difficulty for those who maybe not as good at games or just don't like a challenge.

yes bring back the difficulty. Making things easier makes people complacent.

Oh yeah and Demon's Souls ftw.

they can make it look casual but have a hardcore difficulty, like mario back in the days, that way those casual might possibly turn into hardcore, more gamers

It would be stupid to bring back old school style difficulty. Cherokee_Jack said it right, there is no excuse not to have several difficulty options. Anyone who complains about getting to choose between difficulties (easy, normal, hard, etc.) is being stupid and/or selfish.

I like actually finishing my games. I played hundreds of NES games that I could not get past the first few levels, I play games for fun, not to get immenselyfrustrated. For those who crave the challenge, just up the difficulty.

I think it depends on the type of game honestly. If it is a survival horror than yeah make it tough but without going back to tank controls. However if its a game like Scribblenauts or GTA than Ithink its more about giving the player as many ways possible to complete an objective with none of them being too easy.

Well, if the devs try to make it hard by pulling crap like timed missions, escort missions, etc it gets annoying.. But when a game is too easy it just gets dull, a good thing about games being hard is the feeling of accoplishment is a lot higher when you beat it.. A few other reasons, but nothing to get into.

devs should reward players with really good in-game items for completing the game on higher difficulties. So there would be an incentive.

I don't want all my games to be like contra or ghost n goblins, but I don't want to breeze my way through games, I want more moments where after being a tad bit easy it gets difficult (catches you off guard). Demon Souls and Monster Hunter fit the bill perfectly

In quite a few genres you can't "find out a new way of completing an objective".. I like games where you have to train in to be good, and it takes hours and hours to complete one stage because of constant dying.. That just appeals to me.

P.S. I'm not a masochist.

Brick wall difficulty in old school games was ussualy to make the game last longer as they wereveryshort content wise. But all games these days should have a range of dificultly levels ranging from easy to really hard.

But games with that degree of difficulty are more a matter of memorizing the patterns in the gameplay than actually playing the game. I hated that.

Hmm, it matters.. In a lot of bullet hell games that are more difficult you can't memorize them, even more if the bullets follow you.. If the boss is easy you can tell what pattern is coming up next, but that doesn't mean you know how to dodge it.. Or if you will.

Well, it matters how they raise the difficulty also.. If people hit you once and die in side scrolling beat em ups like in the NES days a lot of people wouldn't like it.. But if as the difficulty was raised you also got new weapons, and achievements to inspire you to continue.. That would seem to be the only way to bring sheer difficulty to a mass audience.

newer games have been getting easier because the game mechanics have been evolving and becoming somewhat more realistic.. but at the same time, less challenging

for example: in older shooters/action games, you would simply aim and fire, maybe stand behind some cover, and run around/strafe to dodge. you may have had a bad point of view, making it harder to aim..

nowadays, you have dodge buttons that cause you to flip around in all kinds of ways, lock on, auto aim, cover buttons, shooting from cover, in some games, you can switch your point of view from FP to TP.. all of these things give you optimal control of your character, making formely difficult situations fairly easy.

so the only way the devsever make it more difficult it to give enemies more health, better aim, higher damage, and to put more in, making the game harder, but in a cheaper way

so as controls become better, games either get easier, or cheaper

Yeah all I can think of is how much fun I didn't have while playing Contra 4 with my cousin. Seriously there's a difference between stupid and challenging. A whole lot of the games from way back when were just too annoying to be any fun and why would you want to bring that back? Game design needn't be that primitive anymore.

Contra is one of the highest held games of that era. Just because you don't like it's style doesn't make it primitive.

sure why not every game have a old school mode. where we only got 3 continues. with only one or no check points. or no saves. i know i would be dead meat lol. i cant stand to play games now more then a few hours straight. and i seem to give up alot faster now if i die. but it would be nice to give the younger gen a taste of old school funness

i think it depends on the kind of game. Unlike games decades ago, games now are becoming more about an immersive experience. However, an easy difficulty can make it seem like your character (yourself) is not actually under severe circumstances that they are usually plagued with from the narrative.

i think the best game is one that does not have you repeat sections over and over again (especially in exciting set-piece moments that wear thin after repetition). However, the game needs to make you feel that it is your ability that enables you to progress.

(mgs4 microwave scene for example: i dont think ive ever failed that section, but it always feels like im going to if i dont tap like crazy)

You can make games difficult on your own. And not just by upping the difficulty level. But by limiting yourself like not using certain items or not allowing yourself to get hit a certain ammount of times etc...

Not necessarily, but I definitely don't think they should be thinking about the accessibility of casual players >_>. I want some damn hard puzzles in my Zelda games, with hard bosses. I want a damn hard RTS online with Starcraft II. I want to be smacked in the ****ing face when I'm playing Mario. I want to be one-shotted by every boss in Final Fantasy XIII if I make one damn error. I want Master Chief to **** my **** and one-shot me, too!

No.

I think nowadays games should have just one difficulty level which should be automatically adjusted to the player's progress. We're in the future.

It's ridiculous how many games have "Insane" or "Impossible" or "God" difficulties for the sake of them, many aren't fun anymore. Bullet Hell games are another type that is just silly.

And Contra 4 has primitive design and difficulty by today's standards. Some people like it, some don't, it was pure fan service.

There is a reason games stopped being ridiculously hard around the time PlayStation, Saturn, N64 and 32-Bit PCs came around.

Well I would quit gaming because I dont have time to play a 3 minute level for days exspecially when they have the room they do games would take 80 frustrating hours for what is now a 5 hour game. They were hard to add length to them now they can just make them truely better.
