Yes you should complete Dead Space 1 before you start Dead Space 2. The 2nd one won't be as enjoyable if you don't.

When I was playing it, this is the exact same place that I stopped for a long time.

I have to believe that there are just certain points in games where this happens to the most amount of people.

Why can't you ever decide anything for yourself?

You should finish it first. First ecause it's a great game, and second in order to fully enjoy DS2 you'll need to know how DS1 ends.
