I know there have been a lot of these threads but I have been thinking about getting a handheld lately. Is the vita a good buy if I haven't played any psp games yet? Also I would like to know if there are a great deal of older games ported over to the 3DS. So far the games that look interesting on the 3DS are the oot and animal crossing, I'm sure there are others but off the top of my head those are the two I would get off the bat. Any help would be appreciated :)

I really like rpg's. Can't really get into too many racing games and I can only really enjoy shooters on consoles and pc. Good side scrollers are always nice as well.

It depends.  The Vita is technically the better device, and it has some good games, just as the 3DS has good games, but it does seem like Sony is having trouble pushing stuff that's truly great.

If you are planning on getting a PS4, get a Vita.

If you are sticking with PC/XB1/Wii U, or just not getting the new consoles for a while, then it's a bit more up to you.

The Vita feels like a higher quality product, but it's interface isn't too great.  It also has exorbitantly expensive memory cards.

It does come down to the games, like always.  If you look through the best games on each system, see which one has more that you really want to play.  Then get that one.

Speculation:  I think that while the Vita has had trouble with sales and with having spectacularly good games, it has the most longevity.  When the PS4 launches, the Vita will join the PS4/Vita/Xperia ecosystem better than it fit in with the PS3.  Not only will remote play of PS4 games become a reality, but many full PS4 games will also come out on the Vita, though in the vast majority cases with downgraded graphics, similar to how Sly 4 was on the PS3 versus the Vita.

If RPGs include JPRGs, then 3DS. Vita has games, and there is a good variety, but the RPG department finds itself lacking. At least in western releases. Though, if you are looking at getting PSP games, too, there is a vlarge catalogue of PSP RPGs that are very much worth it. The 3DS has a good JRPG lineup, and supports the playing of the DS's strong JRPG lineup as well.

Basically, if you are looking at having tapping into both the handheld and its supported predecessor, its hard to go wrong either way. If its just the current gen's lineup, then 3DS.

Also... There is a very barren markeytplace for non-JRPG RPGs on handhelds period, so if that's what your looking for you will be dissappointed.

EDIT: Also noticed you said sidescrollers. There's actually a pretty good lineup for the genre on the Vita.

Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends Muramasa Rebirth Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden Guacamelee! Littlebigplanet Sly Cooper.

Sounds to me like you would enjoy a Vita.

Disagree entirely. Its interface feels perfect for a handheld (I own Vita, 3DS XL, DS, PSP, the Gameboys)

Then 3DS is the way to go. The 3DS is BC with DS games so right there you have an instant huge library and there were a lot I mean a lot of amazing RPG's on the DS. Plus Pokemon X and Y coming out in October.

Do you plan on getting a ps4 in the future?

If so, the Vita will link up well with it.

Im debating on a 3ds or a vita too, but leaning more towards the vita.

If rpg's are your thing then I have to say go with a 3ds. The 3ds has a growing library of rpg's and bravely default is coming out next year. I personally like my vita more because hardware is better for the types of games I like to play such as fighting games, racing games and shooters.

3DS as a hell of a lot of good exclusives as of today. I'd definitely go for a 3DS right now if I had the cash.

Both are good but 3DS wins IMO. You have the potential of having 2 awesome libraries thanks to BC, and you don't have to pay high prices for your memory cards.

You like RPGs? The 3DS is for you. Fire Emblem Awakening, Shin Megami Tenseii IV, Etrian Oddesy IV, Kingdm Hearts 3DD. I wish the Vita had more JRPGs, though considering the PSP Library was full of fantastic ones.

Just a fair warning here, I love my SRPGs and tend to buy systems specifically for those games. That was the case with both of my suggestions. With that said I would get a 3DS and down the line get a PSP.

Right now the 3DS has the strongest lineup of games if you want a little bit of everything, with a whole lot more of everything from the DS. Fire Emblem: Awakening and Tales of the Abyss (if you haven't played it ofc) was well worth the price of admission.

The PSP is ridiculously cheap and has so many good RPGs its not even funny. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions, Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together, Jeanne D'arc and Persona 3: Portable could all be considered system sellers. If you want to get a vita down the road it would be a smart idea to get a bigger SD card for it and just buy everything digital.

I bought the 3DS XL when it was on sale and all I can say is it's amazing. I've played the Zelda games on the Virtual Console which were fantastic and nostalgic, but also I've enjoyed their first party games such as Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance, Ocarina of Time 3D, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Paper Mario Sticker Star. The fact is the 3DS is more affordable and it is killing it with the games. I do want a Vita, but unfortunately the price on the memory cards are bat shit crazy so I would wait for an overall price drop which looks imminent by the looks of sales. In the end, you can't go wrong with either one

Pretty much. I mean I like my Vita because it has some good games, but nothing compared to the flow of amazing releases that come out on my 3DS. The ratio of playtime between them isn't even remotely close.

If you want games then I guess 3DS is the way to go since it has a lot of games. But Vita has a good selection of games too. You might do some research.

3DS. Much cheaper system to buy and maintain, plus it has more and better games across every genre possible. It has the full backing of the Japanese third party along with Nintendo's own first party as well. The Vita is a good device, but it's future support is dangerously thin, and it looks like Sony doesn't quite know what to do with it, relegating it to an expensive PS4 accessory/niche indie game player.

Yeah, being a glorified accessory instead of its own system isn't my idea of 'future looking up,' for some reason.

Definitely 3DS, the Vita is just about dead. Sony no third party support, barely any first party support, wayyyy overpriced system and memory, and Sony hasn't really done anything about it. They really ignored it at E3, and it sounds like it won't be getting any love at Gamescom either, 3DS is cheaper, has MUCH better games, a much larger library of said good games, and a much better future.

Why do people complain about the Vita price? Look at those smartphones and come back later. Maybe the Vita isn't worth getting for that price. But it's sure not expensive.

You can get a smartphone for absolutely no money upfront on a contract. Can you get the Vita subsidized in a similar way? Moreover, a smartphone's utility is incredible and clearly worth the hundreds of dollars it costs. A Vita just plays games, and not even the best ones, since the 3DS beats it there.

"Not the best ones", have you played any of them? Well I wont say Vita has a kickass library, but the games are good.
