Should Microsoft or Sony mandate 4K/60FPS for their next-gen consoles?

By Next-gen consoles. I mean the Next Xbox and the PS5! The next-gen will most likely have the RYZEN APUs inside of them. They're way, way, better than any CPU and APU that AMD ever made! If you think Microsoft or Sony should mandate 4K/60. How would the gaming media would take it? I can see the click-bait titles! Sony ( or Microsoft ) MANDATES 4K/60FPS for ALL GAMES on their console!! Console maker ENFORCING developers to do 4K/60FPS for all their games!! Just 4K/60FPS?!! What about 8K/120FPS?!! What do you all think?

If 4K/60FPS isn't the norm on next-gen consoles then don't have next-gen consoles.

It would be cool if 60fps was mandated, but resolution should be optional, 1440p or 2160p

I agree with this, with the caveat that some sort of hybrid like the Switch might offer other real innovations or bonuses while not reasonably hitting that horsepower mandate. So I would say *if* they want to do another traditional entertainment center one-trick machine it should be real close to that target. And honestly, as much as people are ragging on the X1X these days, it's not that far off - it would be a bit embarrassing if they didn't hit that mark with the next revision.

I'm okay for mandating 60fps, and let them utilize different resolutions/settings to achieve that. It'll never be done, but one could hope.

Moore's law slowing down 7nm sound like it's the limit on silicon die shrink I'm not sure high end pc are even going to be confident unless they start making bigger gpu dies, find a silicon alternative, or start optimising multi-gpu system(unlikely lol). plus huge demission return in visual fidelity going past 4k unless your screen in 70+ inches. so it's basically not worth worrying about.

I would say 60fps will probably be a target. Just reading about xbox one x in a recent article how some previous games will have 1080/60fps modes and can probably bet future games will offer the same options.

Mandate ? No.

A lot of games are and can be great at 30FPS. Look at this gen as proof , and previous generations. All games don't need to be true 4K either. Use the power and memory for animations , AI , scope , level design , physics , destruction , textures , effects , lighting , etc. I'd also like to have an affordable console.

60fps mandatory or turn your ass around next-gen consoles!

60fps is what this gen should have been but no, console gamers want 4K and they have been so obsess with resolution since this gen started.

But in any case, if both Sony/MS don't make any improvements on there next-gen consoles, I will remain on PC gaming in 1440p/60fps and I'll just half to miss out few exclusive games, but it's a price I'm willingly to pay for.

Yes, should have been mandated this gen too.

As long as there's at least a built in option in every game to do 60 fps, even if it's only at 720p - 1080p that would be a vast improvement over this gen.

Contrary to popular belief, even 720p can look pretty good with high res textures, high polygon count, and a competent anti-aliasing scheme.

Like others have said, 60fps should be mandated as that is the foundation for a quality gaming experience. Resolution and graphic fidelity can scale as needed.

Just mandate 60 fps, at least High settings, and leave the resolution as secondary, to what ever can best be managed for the performance.

Also, bring in support for ultrawide display.

You can't mandate or dictate anything to developers, you'll only serve to piss them off and they'll develop elsewhere.

Mandated targets mean you're forcing developers to do something, that won't fly and greatly hampers creator vision.

I don’t think that should mandate it. They should let the developers decide how to use the system’s power and resources to best serve what game they want to make.

How about they get to 1080p/60fps aka "Full HD" first.

Instead of making up bullshit terms like "True 4k" which checkerboarding and the like falls under.

4k and 60fps would be great but I'm not too worried about it.

For me, the days of preordering systems are over. Regardless of how awesome the capabilities of the next PlayStation are, I won't buy it until I see one of two things...

1. PS4 backwards compatibility (both discs and digital)

2. A game I really want to play. Not settling for games available on PS4 as well either like I did for the early PS4 days having games available on PS3 as well.

This gen should have mandated 60fps at least. Ive seen some embarrassingly low fps on consoles this gen.

Oh well. Always next gen to mandate 60fps. I highly doubt we will see a 4k mandate anytime soon. they should bring the fps up to scratch first. Consoles are so obsessed with sacrificing fps for resolution. It's rather annoying.

I guess someone does not play indies. So many small games that are great only need to run at 30fps. And what about puzzle games? Do they NEED to be 4k to be good?

It is very odd to even imagine needing 4k/60fps in so many situations. It would be like asking that system to have WAY less games.

Developers should always have flexibility and not be forced into anything. Certain games are more suited for 30fps or the devs can pull off much better graphics as a result. it's all about balance.

I haven't got a clue any more what their goals should be. But I don't think there's going to be a next gen. You're just going to get new consoles every few years depressingly.

I think that the Tv companies are celebrating the fact that all they have to do is add a few more K's, and millions of people will go out and buy overpriced televisions just so that the "graphics" look a little better.

No..... How about 30fps at 1080p with the graphics turned up to 11?

I'm sick of resolution and graphics increases...... someone... PLEASE...... start progressing and innovating game physics and world interaction.

I would have a game that PS2 level graphics but had the most physics where everything could interact with everything else......

No more games where the player is stuck behind a locked door and the rocket launcher they have won't blow it off it's hinges....

I kinda agree. I see alot of people screaming about 60fps whatever the case , including myself, but on the other hand everyone shit their pants and praising BOTW which is running at 30fps for example.

Can we imagine how BOTW would look like if was running at 60 fps ? What kind of graphics cuts and compromises would be made for 60fps and what negative impact that might had to how world looks , plays , lighting , shadows etc ?

Then if someone would ask you if you want 60fps for BOTW but way less physics or no depth of feild , myst everywhere, excessive pop ins, dull world overall , far less foilage and many other differences what you would prefer ? Its weird to decide whats better when there are such decisions to be made because of hardware limitations.

Its a nasty situation if you ask me. Personally i prefer 60fps as minimum even if that is considered low as well imho , thats why i PC gaming at 1080p still.

To be honest, I don't care about the multi-plats being 30fps on consoles as I just laugh at the consoles and play on PC. It definitely sucks for console only gamers, but they should be playing on PC anyway. ;) 30fps on consoles actually benefits the PC version as it means that the overall scope of the game has been pushed further and the PC version will not be held back as much. However, when I have to play exclusives at 30fps, I get pissed off. I wish all first party titles made their way to PC. Then, I could play without compromises and be a happy man. :)

I am more worried on how Sony and Microsoft plan on tackling the Storage Space problem.

I have a 2TB PS4 and it is almost full and that is just around 60 games at 1080p.

How massive are these 4K games going to be? COD/Gears/ES Online/GTA/Halo and more are all like 70GB-100GB games each.

Can you imagine the install sizes for 4K games?!

I hope in the future we have the option of downloading multiple versions of the same game like we do with movies.

I would be okay downloading most games at 1080p instead of 4K if it would save me 200GB-300GB of HDD space.

No, devs should focus on performance, not Sony/Microsoft.

4K is just a waste of resources, so I really don't care for that at all. Ultra quality assets will make a much bigger difference.

Although it is a meme that is mocked framerate can be utilised in different ways like it is used in TV/Movies. A David Cage game will look more movie like at 30fps and therefore a better fit, whereas a twitch shooter really needs as high as possible.

i wouldnt be that demanding. i would be more focused on framerate consistency.

so if it was the osan0 supermegaultraoptisuplexboxofunXtreme console then a game must meet 30FPS consistently at a minimum. there are many games where 60FPS just isnt needed and 30FPS is just fine. but it must be consistent. if a developer wishes to go for 60FPS it must also be consistent. if the game is jumping around in the framerate a lot then itll be fired right back to the developer. vsync would be mandetory. things like adaptive vsync would be banned. the game must be smooth to play at all times.

as for resolution.....i would be more flexible on that to be honest. things like checkerboard rendering....absolutely go and use it. sure its cheating and not genuine 4K but if it means the developer can free up some resources to use elsewhere then go nuts. i probably would mandate a minimum of 1080P with 16X AF and some form of modern AA but the box would also be so powerful that that target should be trivial to meet. i would prefer to give the developer the freedom to use the hardware as they see fit to deliver the experience they want (as long as the framerate is consistent).

to be honest the other things i would be focusing on if i was a console holder are the quality of the games at launch and keeping things simple. i would try to remove the need to have installs (unless its a downloaded game of course) and instead use a combination of a fast storage medium and HDD caching. the user should be able to pop the disc(s)/cart/optical cube straight into the console and just get playing. thats something i like about the wiiu and switch. just pop the disc/cart in and go (except for BOTW on the wiiu)

as for day1 patches (though i would need backing from all other console manufacturers to make this work): limited to 100MB and only applicable to MP content. the SP should be completed and of sellable quality when the game goes gold. if someone needs to download GBs of data to get the game working on day 1 then thats just not going to pass muster on my console. extra content would be treated seperately and be an optional download (basically you wouldnt need to download loads of MP stuff if you just want to play the SP).
