Should next generation be more concise?

Having watched the movie "Mad Max: Fury Road", the movies premise "bad man has water, rogue knight takes his womans", a three hour movie with set up that lasts about 1 whole entire minutes with almost no dialogue.

By comparison, Far Cry 3 open up with 13 minutes of annoying American people, with a highly linear chase, a reset button, then a black man telling the young white American Jersey Shore man he is the best thing since sliced bread.

Even though the games story is ridiculously simple (rescue friends), in the hours after it, it tries to make it seem like some mystery is being unraveled with a shit ton of annoying cut-scenes. This is symptomatic of most Ubisoft games, Assassins Creed 3 dragging shit out for eternity.

Should next generation console titles be more concise with their story-telling? Or, will this problem actually increase? Mainly due to Ubisoft and Sony?

Any game should take as much time as necessary to tell its story, nothing more, nothing less. Your question, being as broadstrokes as it is, is an entirely pointless question with no real answer.

Just has to be out of the way, not necessarily concise.

I praise Dark Souls' story not because it's any good, but because it's told in the only way a story should be told in a video game, without compromising gameplay.

But if we must continue down this path of cinematic stories being labeled video games, I'd like the stories to at least be good. Meaning: not establishing that our angst-ridden teenage girl has a freakish electra complex for her technical father figure over a 3 hour period.

So yes.

Are you actually trying to compare Far Cry 3 with that of The Order? The Order lasts 6 hours, Far Cry 3 can legitimately take over 50 hours to beat depending on how you set it up.

What is going on here?

My anti-American friend, who are you kidding, when there is no "next generation?"

Exclusives are an increasing relic due to market forces and consoles as a platform are now fossils.

MS has also pulled up stakes and are now trying to court PC gamers, who are still, rightfully, spitting in their faces, given their E3 hype.

Their charade, and the technical education of groundling consolites, is now complete and they can now usher people in to the W10 OS and DX12 ecosystem.

I wish they would tell me the story without interrupting my gameplay. Kinda like Half-Life and others do. I dont like losing control of the gameplay.

Even though this is a very excellent thread, highlighting a major flaw of the gaming industry, the point touched upon about tropes is another aspect Mad Max excels at naturally.

While Far Cry 3 might as well be Birth Of A Nation, Mad Max empowers woman without feeling forced. Max Mad naturally acknowledges Furiosa's markmenship. The sexy woman have a point, they are pleasure woman for the evil bane man.

In "Video games", woman empowerment feels like a forced effort. Most likely due to the growing demographic of money bags, rather than actually giving a shit.

@uninspiredcup: I think they are trying to keep it simple but give you plenty to think about. They want you thinking so that you will talk about it more and discuss on social media. If people arent talking about their games, they can quickly fall out of favor for the next good story.

Dying Light is also super cliche with White savior that is a one man army and no reason why, being a spy and later wanting to join the people you were infiltrating, working on finding a cure on the zombie outbreak which is a virus cuz, Rais was a Vaas wannabe also the I'm so evil I kill my own henchmen cliche, I don't see how Vaas was alive for so long why do his men put up with his crap its not like he can guarantee them anything or is a genius strategist.

I applaud TLOU for breaking the generic zombie apocalypse formula. The outbreak is caused by a species of fungi based on real life ones and they broke the cliche of escorting/finding the cure.

I'll introduce you to an idea: If you don't like it don't buy it.

I liked the MGS series, I liked the long cutscenes and you know what? I bought (almost?) all of them.

You know how many hours I've sat, say, playing the Gear of War saga? About 45 minutes, the 1st, because I got it really cheap for PC. The others I didn't even touched them. With the amount of independent reviewers you have today at your fingertips, and even LPs you don't have to jump blind on anything.

I enjoy human beings telling stories. Some are not very memorable and some are unforgettable. And there are many different mediums in which to do it. Most people here are Pulitzer winners but I haven't read anything from them, so I'll laugh and enjoy the things I do about the stories in games.

............ Hell no.. If I wanted a amazing story that I have no control over I would watch a movie or read a book.. Many of these games like Order have become basically dumbed down adventure games that drags you by the ears down a tight narrative you have absolutely no control over filled with little actual interaction to feel like you are actually doing something.. This shit was alright, even cool, 10 years ago.. But now after we have literally seen hundreds of games do it, I don't care for it anymore.. At this point of time I find the narrative of playing a game like Shogun 2 Total war far more interesting because it quite often (especially with mods) isn't predictable in which clans become powerhouses, and which one dies out over time.. I find games like Divinity Original Sin more interesting due to the PLAYER interaction in how a story changes than the actual story presented to me, because the later doesn't take much talent anymore outside of writing a movie script.. A movie that most times I wouldn't actually consider good if I had to treat it as such.. Many of these AAA games studios have become more obsessed with trying to create a "experience" than actually provide a enjoyable, thought provoking game.. We have way too many games that can be finished within 10 hours or less with little replay value than we do the games that people will be playing for years down the road with entirely new experiences each time.. Is it little wonder why multiplayer in many of these genres have become so popular? It's because its unpredictable and it actually feels like you have a impact on things rather than reading through the lines of a script..

A game that I felt really broke from the mold from this was Dishonored in giving a player a involved narrative while at the same time giving you enough wiggle room to actually feel like your playing a damn game..

Video game developers (triple A specifically) could learn some "less is more" approach when it comes to story telling.

Mad Max also has the benefit of novelty and some self awareness when it comes to its tone. Way too many triple A video games take themselves way more seriously than they should and tell pretty predictable plots in an uninspired manner.

That's adorable you think your little hobby is art.

Also the fact that you're this politically correct means you're not worth my time.

PREACH FELLA! PREACH!

I don't think 'brevity' is the problem here. If a story is shit, it's shit. Come on man, you're using a 'ubisoft' game as your example!
