I posted a similar topic in the Wii U forum, but I want to see what everyone else thinks. With the handheld market being threatened by quality mobile games... can Nintendo stick to making hardware, or should they switch to a software-only company, releasing games on mobile, Sony, and Microsoft platforms?

Not this question again, and again?! Can people in System Wars get some original questions instead of rehashing the same ones?

I don't know about consoles. Wii U seems to be struggling (though it's just launch 2 months ago), if it get's really bad like the GC or worse than maybe they should consider it but their handhelds still sell quite well.

Absolutely not. I think they will have a place in the market for a long time. The hardware they make seems to hold up good, decent games people seem to like, etc...

I personally am not a fan of nintendo. The last console they made that I had was the NES, but I'm sure games on nintendo have influnced the games I like in some way.

I think Nintendo makes great games, but the hardware is so pathteic. That makes Nintendo fans rage when you say that but the fact is there wasnt one quality game on the Wii that wouldnt have been better on the PS3/360. Im currently playing Zelda TP on the Wii U and although I enjoy the game I could only imagine how much better it would have been with HD visuals. There hardware holds there games back and if they went 3rd party they would be the most succesful game company of all time.

I disagree with you about Wii games being better on 360 and PS3. I like motion controls, so games like Skyward Sword, Red Steel 2, Call of Duty, GoldenEye, Metroid Prime, I think they're better with motion controls. Do you prefer using the tank-like dual analog controls when playing first person shooters? That would seem odd to me.

What about all those other quarters over the last 30 years where they didn't lose money?

Not trying to seem like a fanboy here, but business-wise, Nintendo is in better financial status than either of those when it comes to games. They can, really, afford a few bad quarters as long as things pick up, which we can't predict.

And you got a terrible reception to this dumb idea in the Wii U forum too, I guess you realized SW is the only place there will be people crazy enough or dumb enough to agree.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. One bad quarter, largely due to 3DS selling at an unplanned loss, which has changed, means they're doing bad?

You know they have $10 billion in cash right?

With their home consoles, I think they should and maybe have a label that says "requires Nintendo peripheral to play".

I think they should have dropped out of the main console market instead of releasing the Wii-U. Its hardware barely matches the consoles right now, and their hardware is over 7 years old. I'm really not sure what they were thinking, because sony and microsofts next gen consoles will be so much better then the Wii-u, which is already dated.

So ya stick to hardware, they'd make some easy money releasing their mario and pokemon crap on other consoles.

And Nintendo making easy money from other consoles? No, just no. Even SEGA is proving that to be BS.

If there were no nintendo hardware, where would they push all the children games they make, mobile platforms already have plenty of shovelware, nintendo games would just disappear in the crowd, and grown ups on ps360 are no market for them

Yet, the Wii (which mind you came out AFTER the regarded 'failure' that was the GameCube) still made them a success. No way in hell they would do that if the Wii U blows it

Only Sheep want it to stay as hardware.

Even if you own all three... even if you have a WiiU you want Nintendo to go third party. I think they could make better games if they were compelled to compete on an equal level.

No they should not. Say what you will about Nintendo Hardware but it sells, so does thier games.

Nintendos biggest problem seems to be that gamers consumes far more games now then they may have used to, and less publishers back Nintendo (they are all third party more or less).

But whenever Nintendo makes something the Industry listens and watches, for a reason.

Besides, Having thier own platform is likely keeping Nintendo afloat, you need the hardware to play the software, that is way of buisness most could only dream of. And it seems to work.

Of my Nephwes and Nieces Nintendo is THE brand still, Xbox and PS are an afterthought. More Parents are more willing to buy Nintendo platforms of the same reason which is somewhat Ironic, since Nintendos platforms are not by default childrens consoles, but they have marketed the name as such for so long, that it is almost the image in the populations minds.

Then comes the hardware discussion, which is outright stupid "Why have a weak nintendo console, when they can go third party on the more powerful consoles?" Well why have consoles at all? By all means PCs get more powerful so fast that any console is an old heap of junk within a yeah, so why not skip consoles alltogether and just have all games on PC? same mentality, same reason as to why it should not happen.

All I get from this thread is "I want my console to have nintendo games Wah Wah!"

Its pretty good. I've logged an insane amount of hours into it and the two player without split screen is amazing. Online is pretty flawless and the people playing online aren't complete jerks which is something I never thought anyone would be able to say about a COD game again.

Yes, when they developed games for Atari and Arcades.

Nintendo was NEVER hands on with what was released on Atart 2600 or ColecoVision. It was either Atari and/or Coleco who handled the ports.

Nintendo only got credit because:

A) They own the IP's. Why wouldn't you want credit then?

B) They even developed the original versions, which is what the original developers get credit for as well in some ports. Infinity Ward got credit in the Wii port of Call of Duty 4, but it was Treyarch who handled that version. Hell, in the Wii version of Okami, Hideki Kamiya STILL got credit.

Yes, when they developed games for Atari and Arcades.

Actually, even then they were developing the Color TV systems and the Game and Watch games.

Also, they didn't make the ports if I understand correctly.

So your question: Should Nintendo stick to software?

You bring up a good point as most of their games could have ran better on Xbox 360, PS3 or Vita this last generation. But - Nintendo is a brand that will never go away for they have a lot of fans from the older years before PS1 and everyone remembers them for Mario and their place in gaming history (as being the savior). Their exclusives alone will hold fans, but I do see what you're getting at although my answer may not have been very concise.
