This is the million dollar question. Should Sony go after the casual market as well as the hardcore or just stick with the hardcore.

They'll cover both and they'll cover it good as they are doing this gen, unlike other companies who abandon their fans !!!

This is a silly question.

You are in a gaming forum frequented by system fanboys. how many casuals do you think come here?

The rela question is WILL Sony go after the casuals, nto should they.

And the answer is, of course they will go after the casuals. That's where the money is.

Another good question would be, to what extent will that focus on casual affect their core titles/fan base?

Probably not too much. I'm sure there will be plenty of core titles available for the Sony fans.

A question was asked a few days ago what a hardcore game is. Everyone had a different answer. Some said PC only, some said RPG's......There is no such thing. Games are games. Some people can't play PC games, some can't do shooters, some can't play dance games. Games are games. Period. And the best thing companies can do is make sure there is as much variety as possible and make sure they have the best 3rd party games on their system.

The PlayStation brand is the definition of mainstream. Before the PS1 video games were in the domain of kids and enthusiasts. The PS brought in masses of people who didn't care for gaming before. The PS1 and PS2 were a huge success because of massive advertising everywhere and people were playing all sorts of games on them (like dance simulators, sports games, racing games, ect.) as well as listening audio CDs and watching DVD movies on them. The whole success of the brand is based upon mainstream appeal so targeting just a specific group of people would be a financial suicide for them.

MS has a monopoly on the casual market, since they dropped core and went 100$ casual chasing after Wii's pot of gold. Sony should stick with what it knows, delivering world class, high scoring, barn bursting, pedal to the metal exclusives.

Well, since they are the last hardcore gaming co. left, I'd say they should definitely focus most of the resources in that direction.

They should focus on the core gamer, like they are doing now. If Nintendo and probably even moreso, MS is targeting casual that means there is a lot of room for someone to target the core. Not only that, but I want them to do core, so from a personal view, I obviously want them to keep making great new series and games.

They should technically be doing what they are doing, but better. On paper they are aiming for both the gamer audience and the more casual audience. They just haven't really hit one out of the park with the broader audience

Heil don't let this moment of borderline homosexuality ruin this. But your trolling is excellent. It's one of the few entertaining aspects of System wars

Hmmm let me see...

  • Wii sales
  • PS move sales
  • Kinect sales
  • Balance Board sales
  • Arcade games sales
  • PSN games sale
  • Movie rentals

A future console focusing on JUST "hardcore" gamers is laughable. Especialy if that company is Nintendo.

Jak is hard as ****. No casuals are enjoying that game.

Well they certainly can't do what they did with the PS3 again. They gotta balance it out this time.

Can I change this and say a more balanced console like the PS2? PS2 had an amazing library for any kind of gamer.

From a hardware perspective it was anything but "balanced". It was basically a strange CPU which could theoretically output a huge poly-count but was hard to program for combined with an average GPU lacking features newer consoles had (such as T&L and pixel shading) and low texture RAM. It deff. didn't succeed because it would have the most developer friendly hardware but because it had a massive game library and because it was well advertised. DVD playback was a selling point too.
