Well seeing as Sony actually makes money from PS2 still-I see no reason to not milk it for as long as they can with the PS3 taking as much money from them as it does-and dropping as huge a userbase just like that would be a foolish idea-if Xbox was as successful you KNOW it would still be kicking now.

I actually think that it really does not matter, as the loyal, and HUGE PS2 fanbase that are still currently holding over, will eventually come on over to the PS3....it is just a matter of time, but it WILL happen, regardless. Besides, with the PS3 you get a PS1, a PS2, and a PS3 all wrapped up into one anyway. What more could a Playstation fan ask for really?

It might have helped if they had shifted those games over to the PS3 instead of the PS2, but sine PS2 is their money maker I don't think they want to risk it

Most of the PS2 fanbase is not laoyal, they are casuals, and don't care to spend $600 on a system, they'll either go to the Wii or 360

First of all, the Wii is selling better than the PS2 and secondly, the PS2 is last gen not this gen.

killing ps2 wouldn't favor the ps3 in the long run. PS2 is in competition with Wii right now. later on in PS3s life the people who bought a ps2 will more likely go with a ps3.

Well they didn't obviously kill the PS1 after PS2 released and that went well.

One thing that has really impressed me about Sony is that since PSOne they have always been faithful to the owners of the past system, even for years. This is what happened on the PS2 (though backwards compatability was a big thing back then which made a lot of PSOne owners say, "What the heck? Why not buy a PS2?") and this is what is happening now with the PS2/PS3.

We are seeing excellent games like Shadow of the Collossus and God of War II being released for the PS2.

People decry Sony as being "money hungry", but I think that this kind of shows the opposite to be true, since they aren't "forcing" anyone to buy the PS3 to play favorite games (FF XII, God of War II)

I can't say the same about Microsoft, who could have easily released Halo 3 on the original XBOX.

Most of the PS2 fanbase is not laoyal, they are casuals, and don't care to spend $600 on a system, they'll either go to the Wii or 360

How do you know? Have you asked them all? Or are you just speculating based off of YOUR OWN perspective?

What about the Playstation die-hards who have been there since PS1? They are merely holding out because the PS2 is still putting out games into it's HUGE library. Just because the PS3 is $600.00 does not mean that "most" of them will just decide to suddenly abondon their preferred platform in order to IMPATIENTLY go the "cheaper" route, lol.

Once more and more solid titles start coming out for the PS3, the larger portion of the hold-outs will eventually pick up one, as the Playstation is their preferred platform. There will of course be those who also may get a 360 first, as I did myself. But I had to get a PS3 as well....because I PREFER the Playstation platform more, although I do like both.

So, more than likely the majority of the PS2 user base that is currently holding out, will indeed eventually get a PS3. There will be those in the minority who do not have the financial means, nor the patience to get a PS3, and will therefore opt out to go the cheaper route, and just stick with a 360, but the majority will eventually go with what they know, and what they ultimately WANT....a Playstation.

As far as the Wii goes, yes I am sure a few may decide to go that route as well, but it would be less than what you would think, as the Wii simply is NOT going to have the games that will cater to the typical PLAYSTATION gamer. Not bashing either....that is just common sense, my friend.

Yes...that's kinda the whole point of this topic. Should Sony have killed the PS2 to increase PS3 sales? The PS3 would definitely benefit from it. (in the short run)
