I agree on the Digital only Ps5 console but strongly disagree on the power differences. Why the heck consumer wants to buy inferior version of Ps5 when the ultimate ver can do both Physical & Digital, and runs better. There will be buyers remorse when the differences become more pronounced later in console cycle.
I bet Xbox just confuses everyone who goes to buy their kid one. I've certainly not bought things before cause too many choices.
There are some things I want Sony to do that MS does, but when it comes to selling consoles, the worst thing Sony can do is do what they do.
It would be cool if Sony came out with an 'elite controller' - basically a more cost effective and ergonomic Vita-like device. They could do away with the back touch screen, add L2/R2 plus clickable L3/R3 and remove the game slot.
Doesn't have to have its own library or anything, but would allow you to stream your PS5 games and maybe download PS1, PS2, PSP and Vita stuff to play away from the main console.
That way Sony could have the next generation of remote play for the PS5 covered without having to commit to releasing a brand new handheld console. Saves splitting game developments between two platforms, and may even take some of the wind out of the Switch's sails.

For 100 dollars, pick either 1 or 2. You can't have both.
I'd agree that having different performance specs isn't a good idea. One of the benefits of a console is yours is just as powerful as everyone else's so if developers make it work on one system, it works on all systems.
@DarthaPerkinjan:
The only 2 ps5 models that should exist should be the standard ps5 and the ps5 Slim. None of Pro bullshit. Give it all the power it can get from the get go.
I think Sony has learned from the November 11 2006/November 17 2006 Launch of the PlayStation 3 with the fabled 20GB and 60 GB launch models. Costing $500 and $600 Dollars. That didn't end up going well for Sony. This time Sony will stick with just one SKU for PlayStation 5. However this time there is no getting past the High price point for Sony's PlayStation 5. This console is going to be $600 at launch. I would love a price point of $400 but in 2019/2020 not going to happen. They managed to do that for the PS4 launch but people seemed disappointed that PS4 wasn't a huge leap in Technology over PS3. So this time Sony will just release one SKU at $600 with a the "promised" Specs this time around.
Just one console, the PS Blockbuster.... Going outta business soon console. lol :P
Because the backlash of not being able to supply 500 million consoles and consumers backlash with anger and disappointment of noting getting THE legendary SONY console?
oh god, please No.
i hope this is the first and last time they do mid-gen upgrades and/or 2 different launch SKU's
just release one system with top of the line specs for the entirety of the gen and call it a day.
I dont mind 15 different sku at all different power levels and let the consumer decide what they want. But this should all be available at launch.
What is criminal is when you release a system and then mid span you release a more powerful system where you are forced to buy an upgrade if you prefer the better performance. This decision should be made upfront.
Yeah. Just make sure to release them at the same time.
No reason these devs shouldn't be able to make games that scale to different devices.
PS5 games should work on PS4 too. Just lower the resolution. Tuning games for multiple systems takes an insignificant amount of time compared to the development cycle.
You guys worry too much. I see no compelling arguments here, just lots of 'pls no muh sonies'
making two versions of a console is probably not the most cost effective thing.
This is about the only logical reason why they wouldn't.
If the rumours about Microsoft doing that this E3 bode true, then Sony might follow. The 'Pro' upgrades worked out well this generation so I don't see why not.
I think they should start the generation with a PS5 and a PS5 Pro. Just a spec change, not in capability. This idea that a discless console should target gamers on a budget is some of the dumbest shit System Wars has ever pooped. Budget gamers are the most likely to trade in games or buy used.
Normal PS5 = $400
PS5 Pro = $600

This.
No, leave the dumbshit ideas for MS.
I've never undestood why people find two SKUs at launch with different power levels appealing. It sounds stupid as hell to me. Part of the appeal of consoles is not having to deal with shit like that, and the Pro and X weren't that successful. They were vastly outsold by their base versions. I don't mind upgraded consoles but I prefer them at mid-cycle in the console gen not at the start of the gen.

it wouldn't surprise me if it becomes the norm and each manufacturer launches a mid gen "enthusiast" version of each console

Sounds about right. ^
Should there be? I don't know. I don't think there will be multiple PS5's with different power specs at launch, though. I can imagine MS considering something like that. No idea how it would pan out, but there is some logic in wanting to occupy both cheapest and most powerful console spots simultaneously. XB1 was hammered for its slightly weaker hardware at the beginning of the generation, and that compounded all its other problems. We'll see.
MS will have a streaming type box at a cheaper price point and a more powerful console aimed at the premium crowd. I'm not sure Sony will adopt the streaming box but can see them maybe having a standard system.

I sure hope MS isn't putting too much stock in a streaming box as the standard XB system. Core customers want to play natively, so they have to price reasonably competitively for those guys if they don't want to stumble out of the gate. I'd even wonder if it's not worth MS releasing three versions at launch: cheapo streambox (if they must), standard model and premium. Of course, that would take some killer games and features to pull off, if it's even possible.
Actually, I'm not sure it makes sense to releasing a streaming box at all, at launch. Now a disc-less version of the base model, that might attract some customers if it helps to keep the price down.

There, there, lets just go with the Phony's, unsinkable .... PS Titanic. :0
There that's better amright? lol :P
I think it would be amazing if they could make backwards-compatibility work with ps1, ps2, ps3 and ps4. If it gets to expensive then they can release 2 models.
One with that can play ps4 and ps5. And one, which is more expensive, that can play ps1, ps2, ps3, ps4 and ps5.
