for hardcore games..

MGS4 is a great game, but not for everyone.. isnt that what a 4th game in the solid playstation series (7th overall in MG) is supposed to be..?

The question is should a long standing series (any of them) remain accessible to the casual fan or cater to its longstanding fans that have supported the series?

So you should just alienate anyone new to the series, making it difficult to get into?

It should remain open enough to allow newcomers to the series to pick it up and enjoy it. Any game that is too hardcore that only dedicated fans can enjoy is destined for failure. I don't think you can make a new "rule" that games should get more complex in both story and controls.

The controls aren't really complex , the game isn't all that difficult , and the story can be enjoyed on a surface level despite not knowing who all of the characters are. You don't have to be a fan to appeciate the gameplay and cinematics.

im going to give the political answer here and say theres a happy medium imho.

i think a game should always remain accessable to new comers to an extent, even if its the 10th game in. this means tutorials explaining the basics (no harm in a refresher anyway since it can show some of the new stuff in the game and get existing players up to speed fast) and plenty of help should the player need it. story wise, everything the player needs to know should be explained somewhere OR the stories shouldnt be too tightly linked. EG the metroid prime series....if u start on 3 or 2 then u wont be completly lost as to whats going on.

on the flip side, i dont think a game should cater, or be built, for a different audience to its initial fans..thall just alineate them. EG the elder scrolls. i thought morrowind was the pinnacle of the series...but then i looked at the ambition in daggerfall and basically bethesda have been going backwards. neither norrowind nor oblivion are anywhere near as ambitous as daggerfall was and instead of bethesda building on daggerfall....they have been cutting stuff out. thats a terrible shame.

I think they tried to make it as friendly to newcomers as possible IMO, then again i don't blame kojima if newcomers didn't understand anything; they're trying to join a series, the mgs series which is known for its deep story, on its fourth installment, the last in the solid snake story that was supposed to tie up all the loose ends from the previous games.

well yes you should try and cater your game to everyone but the problem with your argument in this particular case is that the fanbase this game has is already a very massive group (heck i bought the game and i only own a wii so i borrowed a ps3)

They should evolve to a point but still hold true to the originals in some sense. MGS4 does stay true to the originals but makes almost every aspect better.

There are enough games that try (too hard) to appeal to casuals; as an MGS fan, I'm quite happy with MGS4 being pure, unadultered fan service.

There's a very fine line,as far as I'm concerned.MGS4 supposedly explained the plot pretty well, according to Gamespot. And besides,if you're lost as to the storyline of a series, isn't that what the Internet is for?:P

Yahtzee talks about all the "greatest" games badly. He likely either didn't like it or was just doing some of it for humor. Don't take it so personally.

Exactly, that was Kojima goal he wanted MGS fans and new comers to enjoy the game equally. The controls were a majoy inprovement over the older titles but still easy to get use to. The difficulty was balanced enough were any body can enjoy the game.

Really OP? I'd like to see you play on Big boss extreme.

Also, yahtzee was SO wrong on the controls, it leads me to believe if he even played the game.. he said you can't shoot without standing up -__- was he high when did the review?

This game catered too much to the newcomers. There wasn't a single section of this game you really needed to sneak through, with one very minor exception, that lasted all of 30 seconds, and about a 50 ft space.
