I agree. It is underrated by IGN. I already crapped my pants within the first few minutes.

Indeed. Homecoming is a fabulous entry into the Silent Hill franchise. The atmosphere is there, the story is there, the music is there, the puzzles are there, and the combat is better than ever, but a lot of enemies past the first few hours still offer a lot of challenge.

At least this game is still survival horror, not like RE5 which looks like a third person shooter. All the footage we have seen of it has been in a brightly lit, wide open area, how is that survival horror?

That would be good if there is any horror in it, but I find it doubtfull that there will be any good horror elements to it, I am looking forward to Dead Space as a true Horror game coming up.

Sorry, but there already are plenty of "horror elements". Just because there aren't closet monster moments doesn't mean it isn't horror.

The horror genre is wide one, and there is plenty of room for action-horror and survival-horror.

You go play Ties That Bind, a game that focuses on action and doesn't have alot in the way of traditional "jump out scares" and then you come back and try and tell me that it is not a horror game.

Seriously go try. You will fail... and hard.

RE5 is the same kind of thing, albeit almost certainly less disturbing.

Has anyone seen a comparo done on the different versions? Seems like they're identical other than jittery shadows and less clipping on one version. Just bought the game off Amazon, game sounds fine to me going by reviews and not scores.

leon has to survive in RE4..what from? what THEME is it? macho guys with guns (action) chicks with sticks (LOVE) or creatures and killings (HORROR)?

You have to be kidding me.

Leon has to "survive the horror" so it's a survival-horror game? Is F.E.A.R. a survival-horror game because you have to "survive the horror"? Man, you need to tighten up your genre definitions.

Yes, RE4 is a horror game, I have said as much several times in this thread. Its stylings sit squarely within the horror genre, but its primary gameplay emphasis is on action; the survival elements (ie, conserving ammo and health) take a backseat to that action, and, if you have even a modicum of skill, remain on auto-pilot for the duration of the game.

Thus the term action-horror, a phrase that, in my mind, carries no inherent negative connotations (I loved RE4). It just is what it is.

No it isn't "just like the previous ones".

That statement alone leads me to believe that you have never so much as touched one of the previous ones.

Resident Evil 4 focuses on action. The entire flow and feel of the game is vastly different, not only from previous Resident Evil titles but from the survival horror sub-genre as a whole.

That isn't a bad thing. I ****ing loved Resident Evil 4, and RE5 looks like it is going to kick all manner of ass. Just the same, I'm not going to sit back and call it something that it isn't. RE4 is an action-horror title, and RE5 looks like it is going to be an action-horror title as well.

Why is that so hard for you to admit? The term action-horror is not an insult; it's just a genre descriptor.

It's a bland westernized game that doesn't even come close to Japanese made horror games like Siren, Fatal Frame, and every previous Silent Hill game. (except Origins, which was also made by a western dev team, and also sucked)

Can we please stop arguing about resident evil being a survival horror game or not?! BOTH ARE COOL GAMES PERIOD!

Now guys I am really thinking about getting SH homecoming, but really do you recommend me to do it? I was really dissapointed when i checked the reviews.... but i see most users like it, so.... what do you say? should I? I really liked the previous games but i always complained about how bad the combat was in those past entries...

Yes go get it. If you're a Silent HIll fan you will apprecaite the time and effort put into the game. Especially on the second time through. (With six endings, seven costumes, and an omega weapon you're going to be playing through alot trying to get all the collectibles and analyze the story).

I know, I've been doing alot of research reading these forums as well as other forums, and almost every thinks this is a great game. Some people even place this in their top 3 Silent Hill games. Although I haven't played it yet, Im kind of disappointed with the monster designs. I love 'Insane Cancer' and the 2-headed baby. :p

The monster designs in this game are some of the best, most interpretative monsters we've seen yet. With the exception of the dog
Which is the town's memory of Alessa
and pyramid head
which really seems like a cop out to me, because they were too lazy to think up a form for Alex, which I could do in like five seconds
the monsters are generally applicable to the main character's fears.

The game is great. I was a little worried they were going to totally morph the action mechanics and atmosphere, but I was pleasantly surprised. And the story is very interesting so far.

I certainly agree with the detractors that the unsettling atmosphere produced by a Silent Hill game is due largely in part to the awkward monster fights. But at the same time, I don't think a successfully framed ambiance should come at the price of the game's functionality. In which case, I thought it was clever that the American developers neutralized this problem by making the protagonist a marine as opposed to just another inept fighter. The fights are still just as difficult and awkward as before, but the difference now is that the aim/attack/dodge system is actually coherent. And trust me, just because the aim is from over the shoulder now, it doesn't make it easy to aim or even kill the monsters. You don't even have as much ammo as you had in the previous games. You still feel like you're being overwhelmed.

I'm proud of Double Helix. Their style meets and, in some cases, exceeds the Japanese developers.

Silent Hill 2, 3 ,4 are dubbed action survival horror games as well.

The standard margins are pretty broad. This is exactly why the people who complain RE4 are displaying their own ignorance on the subject. But that's another argument.

The mechanics aren't necessarily what defines the genre.

You also said this...

Ok, it's really terrible. They injected Gears of war into Silent Hill, and produced character moidels that look notably worse than the ones found in Silent Hill 2, on the PS2, in 2001. It'll get a 6.5 here, at the maximum.VegetaJr

Injected Gears of War into it? What? Have you even played the game? I find it very hard to believe that you have, no offense.

And you also said this...

Homecoming is the absolute ugliest game I have ever disgraced my PS3 with. How in the hell can Double Helix produce a game on the PS3 in 2008 that is inferior to Silent Hill 2, a game on the PS2 that launched in 2002? Ugh. Nothing about this game feels right.

Edit: SH2 actually launched in 2001, which is even worse.

VegetaJr

You think SH2 has better graphics than SH: H, nuff said. Lol!

If you enjoy the game should it really matter what platfroom it is? I was augring with wii owners ( am wii/360) about conduit being fpa it said first person advature on there site.

But it really didn't matter fpa/fps techially speaking anything can be action.

What, i think you're a fan because the combat is broken, it just doesn't make sense to miss where you hit when you're close to the enemies.

I simply doesn't play Silent Hill because of combat. This is a subpar game. 7.0 MAX

Wait until you see them twitching your way in a dark hospital or hotel. :( Their movements are creepier than ever.
