In structure they are entirely different, they also strive for 2 entirely different things. Just because Dark Souls has a seamless world does not mean it should be compared to Skyrim, everyone is comparing it in all the wrong places. Yes Skyrim will be a beast graphically and content wise but Dark Souls was never about the technical aspects (and it has loads of content). Yes I prefer the 3rd person tactical gameplay to Skryims more versatile first person pallete, but again in terms of gameplay both developers are working toward dissimiliar goals.
Dark Souls suceeds fantastically in what it set out to do, create a dark atmospheric world that requires the player to walk through its world rather than having the game walk you through itself.
Skryim, hopes to immerse you entirely in its world with endearing side scenarios, towns, and mythology and make the core experience polished. But Skyrim has yet to even be released. It will inevitably receive Highscores and praise, and will also benefit from being more current and in mind for The GOTY award.
But when it comes down to it all, it may be neither of these games that supercede the other. And Goty may even be irrelevant, only a matter of the reward givers preference.
