From what I've seen from the early screens of Skyrim I can say that it will be an awesome game no doubt, but the visuals though significantly better than Oblivion are nowhere near that giant leap from Morrowind to Oblivion.it seems that Skyrim has visuals that are effectively Oblivion's with a helluva lot of polish and improvements, but not something waaayyyy better as some expected! What do you guys think?

I know I'm nitpicking though,as I care not about visuals and will get Skyrim the day it releases! :P

Sadly they didn't pull a DICE and only seem to be trying to max out the old xbox360 hardware.

Then again we've only seen xbox360 shots.

The improvement of the character models alone make it look a generation ahead of Oblivion.

Both games are made for the same hardware. They had time to polish and understand the consoles more with skyrim but still do not expect miracles. As for the PC version, they will leave it at the hands of the modders as always.

I think some people may have misinterpreted the criticisms toward Skyrim's tech.

Of course the graphics are going to look better than Oblivion, Oblivion was a launch period game. But the tech behind the game is a disappointment, in regard to the track record of the series.

Every TES game, every single one, received a massive technological leap over its predecessors. TES4 was designed for current generation consoles, and so is TES5. It is the first time in the series history that the game wasn't designed for modern technology.

So I can understand people criticising the games visuals, the hardware it was designed for is the same as its predecessor.

I can and will. Skyrim will have amazing gfx mods like Morrowind/Oblivion.

Tho its sad that we're gonna have to use mods instead of Bethesda making it awesome from the get go.

I'll never understand why peoples loved Oblivion on consoles, I always found the vanilla version kinda average. The major selling point for elder scrolls games were always the big modding community. It's like Bethesda creating this sandbox world where pc gamers can play with their toys.

You obviously have not tried any of the amazing mods for MOrrowind and Oblivion, from much better graphics to new campaigns, areas/missions :)

I have oBlivion on xbox and on PC and the difference is mindblowing.

I only enjoyed it on the consoles because i didn't know the grass was truly greener on the other side of the playing field. Plus i didn't have a gaming rig at the time it released

WilliamRLBaker

Why not? Costs are the only real limitation, there is no technical reason why you couldn't have both on PC.

Hell, TES games were more open before consoles got involved. People remember when we could walk into a city without a loading screen? It's only when Oblivion was made with consoles in mind, that cities were cut off from the exterior world. It's probably because of the bad loading times on Xbox in Morrowind.

Of course, they fixed that with mods.

I looks alot better than Oblivion. Sure its not The Witcher 2 when it comes to graphics, but it still looks great.

Here are some of my old pics of modded Oblivion for reference:

Skyrim looks much better so far

Yes Oblivion for PC simply blew X360 out of the water. But when the game first came out ironically some claimed the X360 version to be better looking! Actually few had a rig to max out Oblivion at that time and when the did they understood what they have missed. But that PC superiority might not be there this time around as Oblivion relesed in early days of next-gen systems which are fully current-gen now!

Looks great to me.

It is an open-world RPG, afterall. Improved character lighting and animation is much more important. Hopefully they addressed that.

So long as Skyrim has better animations and a better character builder, I couldn't care less about the graphics. Sure, I would expect them to be SLIGHTLY better in comparison, but Oblivion had much worst problems to deal with on the gameplay side of things than not having great looking visuals.

Smooth Animations > Insane graphics any day of the week.

Maybe they're putting that focus on making the world more immersive? Improving the AI, physics, and actually making every part of the world seem different than every other?

I just hope they fix the god-awful animations that have plagued all of Bethesda's games of recent times. Graphics, they look improved to a point I'm okay with.

Standing still there are only a few differences.

But thats one character model. Every character in Oblivion had the same body structure as every other, bad voice acting, terrible animations, and this is ignoring the bad AI and physics.

If Skyrim improves on those first over the graphics it'll just make the game a LOT better.

I would be more concerned with its gameplay.. Seeing as Oblivion was a psudeo action adventure game with meaningless rpg stat based character building and little to no real decision making.

i don't care, if it's a big open world i don't even expect that much tbo.

they could have made a glorified oblivion map pack and i would have played it.

i'm a pretty big fan of just having a big playground to goof about in.

The character models are already immensely better and the animations are as well. As long as they maintain that with consistency and improve the pop-in from Oblivion, I'd say it's a perfectly fine leap. The trailer looked kinda mind-blowing to me, actually.

To me it looks fine. It doesn't matter that it isn't a next gen upgrade, it looks great in my eyes.
