Smart move by Sony I think they did something right for the launch because it gets people to say positive things about sony when they get their tvs to there houses. Friends and family will probably want to buy a tv after seeing the free tv these people go so overall I think it was a smart move. what say you guys?

I think it was a smart move. What better way to get good press and public interest than to give away a HDTV so others can see it?

In a sane world this would be called bribery but then, I wouldn't mind getting a HD for free.

Yes this was very generous of Sony but notice how they only announced the TV giveaway a few minutes before launch? They were waiting to see how many showed up. I bet if there were a few hundred there's no way they would do this.

Wait, so in order to make it look like their European + Australian launches weren't total disappointments, they had to give away free products, thus losing even more money?

naw. it will be soon be forgotten and only when a person is ready to spend significant money on a tv, then they will. It's good for the people who actually got one. Nice for the moment, but insignificant in the long run.

LOL WTF did you want them to do.....announce it three weeks prior to launch by saying ( "oh the first X amount of people get a free $2500 HDTV) Yeah that's smart.  Imagine the riots.  I think you're looking at it from the wrong point of view

lol How could it be called bribery if NOBODY in line knew about the free HDTV's beforehand? I think you forgot to read the part about it was a "Last-minute surprise"....

all in all, it was a good move. Merchandise doesn't cost sony what the retail price is, so really they probably only spent $300,000 on it and that's chump change when you're talking marketing. hell, a 30 second TV ad for the superbowl costs like $2.5 million.

It's a good move, but not the best of moves.  It doesn't make the PS3 any less or more appealing to buy.  What's the general reaction people get when they see people on TV who win the lottery?  What Sony did more or less generated the same reaction.

They probably payed for those TV's with the extra $200 they're charging the brits and with the money they saved from removing the backwards compatability hardware. But yeah it was a smart move and definatley made the feedback on the launch that much more positive. Helps people forget about the price hike, the delay and the inferior hardware. If I was given one of those TV's I would definatley forgive Sony of all it's European woes. But if I didn't I'd still be as annoyed as I was.

No, of course I wouldn't expect them to announce so far in advance. All I'm saying is that if more people showed up, they wouldn't give out any TV's and nobody would ever know about the plan. They saw the small crowd and probably thought they had to do something to salvage the otherwise embarrassing turnout.

Geeze well obviously if there were like 1,000+ people yeah you're probably right.  But c'mon this is just a sign of someone harboring ill-will towards a company.  In no way is this a bad thing or anything like that, nothing more than a nice gesture to get some good press.

Well it certainly is a way to divert attention away from any bad press that Sony might get in their launch.

im tired of seeing MS and Sony give special colors, units, or giveaways too everyone but America. We still dont have white psp's. MS is American and still doesnt give America special consoles. For being so imortant to the gaming world, we sure get shafted alot.

"Just minutes before the tills were due to start ringing, a Sony representative made the shock announcement that everybody registered in the queue would receive a free Bravia 46" HDTV, something which took some time to sink in with the gobsmacked crowd."

TC, I think the free HDTV's was more of an act of desparation than intellect. Sony is losing ground in the video game market just like Nintendo did with N64..maybe even worse.

They are trying to create goodwill, and I am sure it worked some. With the extra losses from the free TV's, they must be desperate.

I remember when the XB launched around the world to CRAP sales... and M$ did everything they could to sell the bastards.

It does make sense from a  sales stand point. They were doing good in America, no need to give anything away. But in Japan and Europe... a need to sell.

Smart move by Sony I think they did something right for the launch because it gets people to say positive things about sony when they get their tvs to there houses. Friends and family will probably want to buy a tv after seeing the free tv these people go so overall I think it was a smart move. what say you guys?

Only a smart move for media hype really, beyond that it will just piss PS3 potential buyers in europe who already think it's pricey and now they are watching other people, 100 or so get free tv's from Sony which will make some feel bitter about it.
