Guilty Gear is now a 3D rts type game on the 360.

SFIV is rumored to be 3D.

SNK hasn't made any announcement for a 2D king of Fighting game.

Think it is possible this will be the first gen without a 2D fighter?

I think that the games change with time (obviously).. If the market is looking for something more "3D", then you'll get games like VF5, Tekken 6, Soul Calibur 4 ect.. If those games don't sell then you may see some companies revert back to 2D offerings...

I never understood why devs couldn't put the charm and speed of 2D fighters into 3D ones. I mean, whenever I play Tekken (very seldomly, I don't own any), I go "god, this thing is SLOW".

But then, I don't like GG that much either.

I agree... I've yet the only decent 3D fighters outside the one's I just mentioned are DOA, Powerstone (arguable).. Most of the SNK titles have sucked...

First of all Guilty Gear on 360 is purely a spin-off the REAL Guilty Gear (^^ Core) just came out and is coming out for the Wii.

Second of all keword Rumoured.

Third of all Sengoku Basara X is a game you've missed.

Fourth of all is also Bleach DS series

Sadly yes, the 5th generation seen some of the best 2D title and even at that time there wasn't a big market for them. Its sort of depressing to think of all the 2D potential the Wii, PS3 and 360 has that no one takes advantage of. Seems many devs want to render realistic graphics. When they could make HD 2D games that animate like a disney cartoon.

The Wii has a high amount of 2D games coming out for it.

And these are just "exclusives" (Well Eternity's Child is on DS also)

I didn't count multiplats such as Guilty Gear ^^ Core and KiKaiWorld.

The Guilty Gear on the 360 is just a spinoff there will be more 2-d fighters of GG to come. Also SNK has a few new 2-D fighters coming to the states between late Oct and Nov. Also there is a rumor that SNK is working on Kings of Fighter 10.

Dude that made no sense. SSBB is a side scrolling 3-D fighter. Just because its a side scroller doesn't make it 2-D for example Valkyrie Profile 2.

I would hope so. It introduces a lot of mechanics that 2D fighters don't have.

If done right, Street Fighter IV could be a great 3D fighter.

Pretty much. Having 2D games kind of ruins the point of having next-gen systems.
If there are more, they are for handhelds, and or Wii.

Either way, the golden age of 2D is completely over.

The EX games were a decade ago. Technology has vastly improved since then, so there wouldn't be any slowdown in gameplay. As long as they keep it on a 2D plane, who cares? 3D models this day and age would look fantastic and would animate gorgeously. I'm talking strictly about the aesthetics here. The gameplay would stay 2D.

I am incapable of playing 3D fighters (except SSB), while I love 2D fighters. SF4 MUST ABSOLUTELY BE 2D or else it'll probably flop like all the other 3D SF games

That's not side stepping, thats just getting passed them or something like that. I played CVS2 and you can roll and stuff, but you can't move your character towards and away the screen like in 3d fighters

You havn't been playing the right grooves then. Play with S groove and you'll see 2d fighters have side step. Also, play some SNK games. Side step galore.

My preference is towards 2-D Fighters, SSB is the only one that has me playing competitively. All the other ones such as Tekken, DOA, SC, et cetera feel slow paced. I miss going to the arcades frequently just to play 2-D Fighters against other players.

The only thing that technology has improved is the graphics, not the gameplay(unless you're talking about the Wii). So a 3D SF game with a gazillion polygons would still suck in comparison to the 2D ones. Its a fact that SF does not translate to 3D well. But seeing that most people here are compulsive obessive with 3D looks they would more than likely be content with a 3D SF game, even though it would pale in comparison to a 2D one.

And how does circling around a opponent change the game? It doesn't! Its visual only. Circling around=Basically dodge, 2D games have had side step for the longest time.
