Just seemes to make sense to me. I think that Microsoft screwed current 360 owners with the Elite. I know I'd be pissed as s**t. Anyways, isn't this more good then bad. People now don't have to toss over wondering which system to get like I did.Rhaxdric
Agreed.
But before we kiss Sony's feet too much, I have a sinking feeling they are getting ready to pull an "Elite" on us real soon.
80GB unit anyone?Â
you think droping the cheaper version of the ps3 is a good thing? please explanlawlessx
It prevents fanboys from using the argument, "You can get a better system for only $20 more than Xbox360 Elite."Â
you think droping the cheaper version of the ps3 is a good thing? please explanlawlessxIf people cared about the cheaper model, they would've bought those more than the 60 gig. the 60 gig sold out the 20 gig 10 to 1. So the question is, when are they gonna make the 60 gig cheaper?

As long as I can buy whatever a new PS3 has and easily add it to my PS3, I'm fine. So long as they don't add internal hardware that can't be changed on the current PS3s.
Agreed.

its a good thing for sony, but not for the consumer. more choices is always good, even though 90 percent will choose the 60 gig, still 10 percent choose the 20 gig. In the long run it was to cut loses. and I expect a price drop in the future for the 60 gig really soon.Â

Sure, the 20GB didn't sell well at this early stage, but early adopters are less price sensitive. As time goes on, the PS3 purchasers will be more price aware, and Sony just raised the entry level to their system. Don't get me wrong, this is by no means a terrible blow to the PS3, but it will, at the very least, delay some PS3 purchases.Â

They incur less loss per PS3 sold.Â

The 360 offered two models over a year before the PS3's launch and continues to sell both to this day. Sony's 20GB model discontinued after less than 6 months on the market.

I actually made a thread linking to a site that wrote an article saying an 80GB was on the way and they had an official Sony document to prove it. Dropping the 20GB to me just ensures that i'll get a 360, $500 was already pushing it.[QUOTE="lawlessx"]you think droping the cheaper version of the ps3 is a good thing? please explangame_masta14If people cared about the cheaper model, they would've bought those more than the 60 gig. the 60 gig sold out the 20 gig 10 to 1. All the 20 gig systems sold out. Sony decided to no longer ship anymore 20's so don't make it seem that it was the consumer who made the decision for sony, they did. When was the last time anyone even found a 20 gig in any store? Jan? Pretty much, if they didn't sell you would still be able to find tons today!

Why the PS3 20GB discontinued is bad? Maybe not bad for the economy of scales, but really bad for the media and for the market reaction. Did X360 Core discontinued yet, NO! It just shows that Sony made a mistake for making a 20GB version in the first place and for jacking up console price.
Bad for Sony because they're losing market share, it doesn't affect ps3 owners though. Neither does the 360 elite, just more GB for movies, it's the same thing exactly with a digital output. themyth01
It doesn't affect PS3 owners but it does affect potential PS3 owner who will think that PS3 is losing face and an overpirce console compare to the alternatives like the Wii60 combined.

I could say the same thing about Elite.
It could affect potential Xbox360 owners who will think that Microsoft is in the habit of releasing consoles that aren't ready for primetime yet. Why else release a new version 18 months into lifespan?
Not to mention the price for the Elite + Wii messes up your Wii60 argument.

Rofl, sony: "We're HELPING our customers by forcing them to pay more. It's better for them because now they don't have the option for a lower price."
Customers were forced to pay more from the getgo.
It's not like the shelves were stocked with $500 units.Â

Did I say Elite Wii60, or did I just said Wii60. Is it possible in any way to get a Wii60 for less than a price of a PS3, Hell YA! Don'y get me go math again but if you must then here is goes:
X360 Premium Bundle with Tom Clancy game $399US (Wal-Mart)
Wii with Wiisport $250
Total = $650
PS3 = $600
plus one game for arguements sake to match the games ratio = $59.99US
PS3 with one games = $660
$660>$650
As for the case of the elite, elite is just for potential XBox gamers who wanted to get higher hard drive (120GB) and HDMI output. The introduction of Elite does not mean failure of X360 compare to the discontiuation of teh PS2 20Gb which practically means a mistake part of the Sony. At least X360 Core lasted more than a year.

I didn't say it did.
I said some consumers out there might feel that way. They might be thinking, "Any other reason to explain why 18 months later, MS felt a reason to create an updated model?"

I don't understand the "microsoft screwed current 360 owners" when a HUGE majority don't even want the ELITE because it's purpose is for the television functions that most people won't use anyways. I think it's something that cows love to talk about while they wait for a batch of decent games, but when you consider exactly how many people will buy the elite, I don't think it's as much "ownage" as cows would LOVE to claim.
Getting rid of the 20gb is a sign of weakness. If it was selling good than Sony wouldn't pull it. The lower pricing point was huge in targeting casuals, and it's kind of sad that it failed because the difference between the core and premium was not very big at all. But they didn't just decide to pull it so people would have less choices...it was obviously just a waste of money for Sony.

At least the reason for Microsoft is to provide an additional product for those gamers who want to store movies and media in the XBox 360 through Elite. PS3 20GB discontinuation is the opposite, Sony is removing a product because it does not sell as well as expected and it might affect the 60GB version. There is a BIG difference between a introducing a new different better version and removing a product line.

Hmm...sounds good.
But it's actually misinformation.
Sony states they're discontinuing the 20GB model as interest in it was low. They never said anything about failure to meet sales expectations.
Furthermore, Sony never mentioned anything about the 20GB model affecting 60GB sales. Are you just concocting material now? You do realize that won't fly in an argument? Right?Â

Â
low interest= low sales? Â
Well, I think that Microsofy has stopped making Core Systems.
They made a bunch at launch and never sold out.
Now they are being used to make pyramids in BestBuys.
No, but I really think that Core's never sold that well. And I think that Sony is better off with 1 sku instead of Microsoft's 3.

True.
But low enough to warrant yanking it just 6 months in?
Somehow, I don't see that being the reason.Â
It was stupid- there is no real argument "for" dropping the 20gb version from a consumer perspective.
The fact is, consoles need to reach a mass-market price to be successful. This is one of the reasons the Wii is selling so well- anybody can go buy it at that price. Over the long term, though, price cuts will do less to stimulate sales.
The PS3 is clearly the furthest from a mass-market price. Dropping the 20gb version is a step away from this. Now, I know Sony loses more money on the 20gb, but again, we're consumers. The things that make the PS3 expensive are things that are commonly shared- Cell, Blu ray, RSX. The amount of cost-savings by selling more with wifi, the memory slots, and the trim is almost nil; the're not going to go down in price THAT much more. It's the cell/blu ray/RSX that need to come down in price the most to get them at mass-market (which I believe to be currently around $300) and that will only happen with more sales, which could be driven by a cheaper alternative.Â

It's bad because I wanted one. I only bought the 60 because it was the only one in stock.
Same thing with this scenario: I would have bought a Nintendo Wii, but there was none in stock. See how that works? I'm not going to put up with not having what I want for very long before I move on to something I CAN buy.Â
