PS3 hasn't been pirated? Um..you change the OS on a PS3...you need to get out from under that rock.comstrikeiscool
You mean linux? Thats not piracy, that was made available by sony from day one. Piracy means playing copied games.
WUT? No, the PS3 isn't profitable yet. I think their gaming division as a whole is in profit because of the PS2 and PSP but the PS3 is still losing Sony money.Floppy_Jim
I am not talking in the sense of every ps3 sold there is a loss. I am talking about the fact that with every PS3 sold, you can virtually guarantee to recoup the cost with games everywhere.
If a console is profitable or not it is not something to agree or disagree with.
It is not a matter of opinion, it is a matter of fact.
And fact is, that the PS3 is not profitable, yet.

Not necessary.
You guys need to read my statement correctly before jumping on the poll buttons.football_legend
Welcome to system wars :).Try sharing this info at the PS3 boards. But its useless cause they have already agreed on this fact.
Over here all people read your post is "PS3 sells at a profit and owns the 360"....EVEN one MOD was even kind enough to discuss MS in this thread

Sony has today announced that consolidated sales and net income for its financial 2007 (April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008) broke company records.
Overall, sales and operating revenue was up 6.9 percent to ¥8.871 trillion ($78.5 billion), and operating income was up 422 percent to ¥374.5 billion ($3.3 billion). Income before taxes was up 357 percent to ¥466.3 billion ($3.9 billion), while net income for the whole of Sony was up 192.4 percent to ¥369.4 billion ($3.3 billion).
In the games division, sales increased by 26.3 percent over last year to ¥1.284 trillion ($11 billion). According to Sony, the PlayStation 3 saw a "significant increase" in sales, as did the PlayStation Portable, which Sony pointed out probably had to do with the release of a shiny new slim version.
Operating loss for the games division was almost halved from last year to ¥124.5 billion ($1.1 billion), an improvement of some ¥107.8 billion ($954 million) over the previous year.

Low attach rate with no piracy doesn't mean more money. You're statement makes no sense.

I seen an article on another thread that is more up to date, saying the exacy opposite. ukillwegrillThat may be so. Thats the official Sony figures for last year's fiscal report. I haven't seen the 1st quarter figures from this year.
EDIT I think Sony's gaming division did turn a profit in the 3rd quarter of last year (the holiday season). But thats when the big sales happen.
PS3s are still selling at a loss. cakeorrdeath
I thought they were selling even now... I just remember it cost $800 at launch to make a PS3, but then they cut the cost "in half" and now are selling it for $400...
Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought they were breaking even on PS3s now.
Despite the fact that the PS3 doesn't have higher attach rate than 360 yet. We must remember that PS3 is the only console of the next-gen that is still not pirated. So we can always guarantee that with every PS3 sold in Asia (or wherever the piracy is taking place), people will buy some original games. But for 360 or Wii, same cannot be said.football_legendI am not at liberty to describe the methods used, but piracy does indeed exist on the PS3. It may take a little doing and some patience, but the ways are out there. Literally, no one is safe.
Sony =/= game makers, game makers are the ones losing money off piracy not Sony. Same with Nintendo and MS, so it's purely down to 1st party game sales and consoles, and last time I checked Wii sold for a profit console wise, as does 360, and both of them have 1st party games that've sold millions, especially Nintendo, I'd like to see someone attempt to pirate Wii Fit...bobbetybob
sony are game makers though. :/
Think of it like this for an example, it cost Sony $5 bucks to manufacture a PS3 and it's only sold for $3 bucks, I don't think that's profit at all.

Yeah sorry I didn't clear that up, I wrote that then wrote how 1st party is effected afterwards without changing it. But yeah, what I mean is the majority of games that are pirated aren't first party, sure they'll still get pirated, but I guess more people are willing to buy them because a lot of the time they are the quality games, stuff like God of War or Mario Galaxy is more likely to bought than Bee movie or Ghost Rider.

The console makers do generate revenue from 3rd party game makers too through licensing. My mates ps3 is pirated

hackers HAVe actually cracked into the firmware but they have not yet managed to get piracy on PS3.Reson is that one blu ray costs nearly 40$.And there are very less blue ray writables. Also with the PS3 firmware update you would be easily caught. Some games dont even boot without updates.

THATS THE WHOLE GAMING DIVISIONThe PS3 is still a money hole...:|
People who are voting NO are wrong, Sony's stated months ago that they started truning a profit on their ps3s.
The levels of piracy on the 360 and Wii really arent high enough. From working on ground zero (a shop that sells games) the people who buy consoles are very different to what most think. Piracy is tough on those consoles and 99.9% of people just dont consider it. Also piracy as long been associated with people downloading games they would never buy in the first place.
Your taking a very simplistic view of a complex economical situation.
Its not a valid argument if you decide not ignore important elements like R&D costs, units sold, software units sold, licensing cost differences between each company, operating costs andin the case of PS3, those who bought the unit as a BluRay player only.
Thats just on the cost of the system, its completely forgetting everything else such as shipping and retailers cut, not forgetting taxIf Sony wasn't making money on PS3 I doubt they would be throwing all these bundles around.

Not to go into too much detail, but I've been told that using recordable BluRay discs isn't necessary to play illicit PS3 games. And as anyone in the black side of gaming will note to you, people can be considerably patient when the price tag is 0.[QUOTE="FirstDiscovery"][QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"]Not last year http://www.gamespot.com/news/6190923.html[QUOTE="Floppy_Jim"]WUT?
