It's harder overall, it requires an insane amount of dedication to master, it's easier to die, it punishes you just as hard, and if you fail to much, you have to start at the beginning or the world.

To me a game that has a significant barrier for entry is hardcore. A game that doesn't hold your hand or meet you halfway, but demands to be played on its own terms. ie the opposite of casual.

I don't think I ever layed Wipeout. But if I were to say Wipeout I would've included F-Zero on my list though that isn't a currently used IP at the moment.
Why? Because they're not that hard. hardcore doesn't mean "hard", its just a gamer thats willing to devote time/energy to something, demon souls and dark souls while aren't hard, you can't exactly beat playing casually, you have to put effort into building your charcter and planning on how you'll take rooms.

mmhmm the nday a console has a "hardcore" game on its hands is the day we can categorize fighting games in that category XD. till then the pc has all the hardcore franchises. we need only mutter the word "quake" or "ut" or "starcraft" to send the ants fleeing for their lives
