Poll So has the 3DS finally surpassed the DS by now? (38 votes)

DS 63%
3DS 37%

It's 2016, and with more games incoming the 3DS has grown to be a genuinely great system that not only carved a nice slice of that market share pie for itself (that's mostly dominated by smartphones and tablets), but also managed to amass a huge number of great games. Be it exclusives, remakes or ports, you can't deny that there's enough variety there to keep anyone occupied with quality content.

Is the former juggernaut of handhelds put aside to make room for its successor, or will the 3DS forever be in the DS's shadow? Lets put aside the fact that the 3DS is BC with the DS, and compare their retail libraries of games.

Just scratching the surface to refresh your memory on the DS:

No Caption Provided

No need to do that for the 3DS, still fresh.

**** no.

Laughably no. It's not in the same ballpark, not the same universe. The DS crushes the 3DS without a second thought.

Not quite yet, but when all is said and done, I think the 3DS's library will surpass the mighty DS. For instance, it'll have two great Fire Emblem games vs the DS only having one shitty FE.

Well the nice thing is that 3DS can play DS games, so combine the two is amazing.

The Fact the 3DS can play DS games made it surpass it back in 2011.

I don't know about overall but the 3DS's first party stuff is definitely better.

Actually yeah this. I never had much play with the DS library, but I always yearned to for it, to play it. Still only played a few games, but I freaking love the 3DS' library, so 3DS has surpassed it in terms of my limited bias.

Never been much of a JRPG fan. And the number of 3DS games I own surpasses the number of DS games.

Also, spent more time than I am willing to admit on Rune Factory 4. Kid Icarus: Uprising was great too.

The only thing I really prefer with the DS was that it had better a better "mainline" SMT game. Also, where is the Advance Wars, Nintendo D:

For my own tastes, absolutely. The DS may have had more games, but the 3DS has, in my opinion, better games. And the fact that it continues to get more of them (2016 looks great for it) means that its star is only going to continue to rise

I miss the quirky games, such as Professor Layton, Nintendogs, and The World Ends With You, which characterized the DS, as much as the next person- but I'm not going to let some misplaced sense of longing for something 'new' get in the way of my appreciation for something better, and the 3DS library is, at least for my tastes, better at this point than the DS library was.

For me personally, yes, I've had a much stronger interest with my 3DS than I ever did with my DS. However, it took living a couple years without an Xbox or PlayStation console for me to make time, since getting an Xbox One I've not played my 3DS nearly as much as I'd of liked. Plus, when I gamed on my original DS back in the day I use to use the bus more, so lots of down time waiting for bus, riding on the bus, when I wasn't in a good book I was usually playing my DS. When I was without consoles for a while though with my 3DS I was playing it both at home and on the go so I got much more time out of using it. I use to have a DS Lite, I'm a much greater fan of my 3DS XL.

It's a shame Nintendo hasn't encouraged publishers from releasing DS games digitally to play on 3DS, that would be so cool to go back and easily acquire digital copies of games I missed on the DS. Thankfully there's not many and I acquired most I wanted to play physically, but I could probably find more if given the opportunity.

In many ways the 3DS is just a more advanced DS, plays the same games, when playing DS games the battery lasts way longer, the XL screen is so much nicer and breathes new life into games. Only thing I can't do on 3DS is play GBA games... well, Ambassador Program had some choice digital GBA games but they haven't released anything there with the 3DS eShop which is a damn shame. NoA has been pretty lazy on that end with the Wii U eShop as well.

The DS is far and away better than the 3DS, and I'd put the GBA above it too.

In comparison.

your DS List.

  1. SMT: Strange Journey- 6.0

  10. Ghost Trick - 9
  11. Hotel Dusk - 8.2
  12. Infinite Space - 6.5

Average Scoring - 8.1

vs

My 3DS List

  1. Etrian Odyssey IV - 8
  2. Bravely Default - 8
  3. Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance - 7
  4. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - 9
  5. Fire Emblem Awakening - 8.5
  6. Zero Escape- Virtue's Last Reward - 8.5
  7. Theathrhythm Curtain Call - 8
  8. Mario and Luigi Dream Team - 8
  9. Resident Evil Revelations - 8.5
  10. Professor Layton X Phoenix Wright - 8
  11. SMTIV - 8
  12. The Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds - 9

Average Scoring - 8.2

I tried following your list closely and I think I did a good job. As you can see both libraries are fairly equal to each other with just a point difference between the two.

and the 3DS isn't even done yet with Fire Emblem Fates, Dragon Quest VII, VIII, and XI, Project X Zone 2, Hyrule Warriors Legends, and Zero Time Dilemma coming.

With that I think the 3DS has already surpassed the DS and is a much more worthy successor in every sense in the word.

The DS might be the greatest handheld of all time. The 3DS is a solid handheld, but like paganism, it might be the last of its breed.

The 3DS is practically JRPG king right now. If you like JRPG's, the 3DS is essential and you'd be stupid not to own one.

However, people have mentioned Advance Wars but I honestly don't miss those games. Especially with the way Fire Emblem and Pokemon are doing on the 3DS. I'd argue that Fire Emblem and Pokemon have, quite frankly, never been better... and this is without even mentioning that OoT, MM, and ALBW can all be played on the system.

The 3DS definitely stumbled and fell out of the gate. The mistakes tarnished the handheld and admittedly, the initial launch model of the 3DS was incredibly lacking. But that was years ago and 2016 looks to be a killer year for the handheld.

I wanted to add this in though.. The lack of a great Castlevania, (proper) Metroid, or Mega Man game will never settle well with me.

The DS was at the right place at the right time to become the mainstream hit it was just like the Game Boy did before it. As for me ... I haven't played the DS at all nor the GBA but I love my 3DS, I have so much fun with it. In mid November I bought on a wimp Mario and Luigi Dream Team and sank 35h already in it

That's a great comparison. Damn, i never imagined Strange Journey got such a low score on Gamespot, that game is absolutely fantastic and well regarded by a majority of the community.

Wen i made the list i mentioned the games that were off the top of my head and i also considered the ones that got an enhanced port on the 3DS. That's why i didn't bother to mention Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 1 & 2/The Ace Attorney trilogy which are excellent games no doubt, but with better versions on the 3DS.

Now hold on, the PS2 has a shit load of great JRPGs to play. If you feel the console itself is too old, you could just install PCSX2 which is easy to manage these days, and play these games in 1440p. Ofcourse you'll buy the games and rip them yourself.

But that's besides the point, i can't see the 3DS being a better system than the Playstation 2 for JRPG fans.

There is already a Professor Layton game for the 3DS and well as for Nintendogs. Unfortunately, none of them stand out compared to their predecessors.

I personally feel the 3DS is way, way past the DS in terms of quality (and quantity) of games. It's probably the best handheld library I have ever seen, and definitely in my Top 3 of all time.

The 3DS will always be in the DS's shadow. But the 3DS has proven to be a terrific system in it's own right. I know I love mine, plus I can play the entire DS library.

Yeah, i just finished reading it and am currently keeping an eye out for future chapters. It's a great read, probably the best in a long time. This guy (ONE) really has a talent, i like how fresh his works are in that they're unique and don't fall in common tropes. His writing is great and manages to make the characters feel multilayered and emotionally attachable.

The manga industry really needs a guy like him, i'm glad hes getting mad recognition with the anime adaptation of One Punch Man, and the future anime adaptation of Mob Psycho 100.

Along with Kentaro Miura (Berserk) and Hideaki Sorachi (Gintama), ONE is definitely one of my favorite writers in the industry.

While it does not have the sales of its predecessor, the 3DS will eventually have the games that will surpass the DS. 2016 maybe the year.

I think it could be better with more time. 2016 is looking good for the 3DS which is a good sign.

I'm sure for most people it comes down to time invested as well. I know I've played my DS library a lot more than my 3DS library. For the longest time my DS was the only gaming platform I had before investing in a PC.

It also comes down to a lot of big name franchises just begging for sequels and/or follow ups on the 3DS that we aren't getting.
