Servers shut down in under a year?

Hmm the word I'm seeing from certain hardcore MMO forums is that DCUO is actually a really good game surprisingly. People right now are raving about the combat system and how fluid and fun it is. If SOE can deliver on the promises for monthly content updates then I think DCUO will be the next premium MMO that actually does well.
I would take any review for an MMO with a grain of salt, just try it out for yourself to see what all the hubbub is about. The positive word of mouth that has been tickling my ears is making me consider trying it out, and I really, really do NOT like the DC universe lol, but if the gameplay is worth raving about I might have to give it a go sometime.
As MMO's go its a bit bland but does have that childhood factor of "DC comics". That will go a long way.. Combat is good but really it reminds me of playing dynasty warriros. Not a bad thing but just my feelings on it. Its probably gonna "flop" on gamespot and get something between a 6-8. We might see a major score changes between the Ps3 version and PC version.. PC has such a vast amount of MMO's for the game to be judged upon while Ps3 doesn't. I expect a 7.5 on ps3 and a 6.5 on PC though sadly this game will probably be cut and paste for each review(we know how gamespot does a lot of these type of things on multiplat reviews)
Kevin V is reviewing it so atleaast we have the gamespot reviewer with some pedigree on MMO's touching this bad boy.... We will see. Gameplay isn't really innovative or anything for MMO's as many others did alot of this button combo smasher up type thing in the past. Wonder if the DC universe banner will be enough to really get this game over the hill.. Sadly, I don't think so.
We'll see.
A lot of MMOs are huge upon release. Often times there is a large amount of hype for some PC MMOs like Warhammer, Age of Conan etc. Those games were incredibly popular at the start of their lives, and after a month or so people realized those games had absolutely zero staying power, and the games died.
We see DCUO has got the hype given it's a high seller on PC, and PS3, and they're opening up new servers, but we'll have to wait a few months to see if the game is still doing good.
[QUOTE="Zune_HD"]
It'll be supported by nich DC fans, but give it a couple of months and it'll be a ghost town.
Jaysonguy
Considering that DC fans are among the worst when it comes to supporting it's franchises that's a bad sign
You're right lol. I considering myself a huge DC fan and I'm staying very far away from that game.Servers shut down in under a year?

So you don't own a PS3 or gaming capable PC, and want the game to not only flop (by Gamespot standards), but also be a complete market failure. How sad, how truly sad.

Hardly. But you can put imaginary words and intentions in my mouth if you wish, that's far more sad:roll:
It's more of a statement on why nobody can seem to put sucessful alternative to WoW, and what it'll take to topple it.

People are pretty pathetic sometimes. There's been a great reaction to this game, a lot of people seem to love it and it's sold well. It shouldn't be judged a failure just because Giantbomb didn't like it, I've seen a lot of 8/10 scores. Even if it did flop how could you get joy out of it?, MS just abadoned their superhero MMO at least Sony went through with it and they deserve credit for trying.BigBoss255
It has a 64 on Metacritic and only one is above 80. To be fair there are only 3 reviews but, it doesn't look good.

I would really love for you to point out exactly where he stated that? Seems like you may just be assuming.Who cares about reviews.
If you went by reviews, you would think 3rd Strike was an average fighting game. (Well actually, atrocious. Games thats are given 8.5 are "meh" to SW so a 7.0ish game would be an atrocity not worth looking at)
If you went by reviews, you would think MW2 was better than Unreal Tournament, Quake, COD 1-4, CS.
Reviews are a joke.
I've heard the game is worth playing. Yes there need to be some changes made but what game doesn't have that? To judge an MMO off of two weeks is dumb. The only people who have negative things to say are the ones who haven't tried the game except for the beta (becauses betas = full game amirite?) and just go by reviews.
Most likely Sony didn't send the reviewers their checks in time.
I saw alot of people who have it on my PS3 friends list, and I asked them what they thought about it, and each one then said that they're having a blast with it. It looks really fun, and the whole superpower thing is pretty ecxiting.
id_mew
Enough fun to continue paying for it in 3 months? Enough depth for 6? That's the key to a paid MMORPG.
I doubt the servers will be shut down any time soon. Lots of MMOs that aren't all that big still have their servers open.

In the first 5 pages on N4G there's at least 10 AA or above reviews. Most of the sites I've never even heard of but as far as I'm aware GB is the only major site to review it.

Lol what has exclusive got to do with any of this?
Yea but it's still a console exclusive, the same way cows made fun of Fable III.Who cares about reviews.

Well this is great, you destroy your own argument
You start by saying that we shouldn't listen to what others say about games and end it by saying we should listen to what others say about games
If you put it this way
: SOE added more servers because it was a FREE month, and alot more people would of played it for the first month rather than the latter
..is quite concerning, how will it fair later down the road?
Im waiting for SOE to fix alot of glitches,MMMMOS are very buggy at launch. Then i'll buy it

how about u wait until the 3 months are over... even if its the worst mmo out there i dont think u could accomplish everything in so little time.huge flop. even super hyped cow games like killzone 2 and MAG are pretty much empty now, this flop mmo game is going to be dead as a doornail in 6 months.
Funny because people are still playing KZ2 and MAG.huge flop. even super hyped cow games like killzone 2 and MAG are pretty much empty now, this flop mmo game is going to be dead as a doornail in 6 months.

Really is that why i have no problem finding a match?I have no problem finding matches on old old games, doesnt mean the game has many people playing. just a a handful of dedicated players that stuck around.Eurogamer review was based off the beta going by most of their complaints and GiantBomb seemed to have an agenda against it from day one.Zero5000XThe Giantbomb review was laughable because it was an agenda against MMO's not just DC Universe online. They should have left the game alone if they didn't like MMO's not bash the entire genre and direct all the hate at one specific game.
They called the combat "latent" due to the latency of a MMO server. Anybody with a decent connection should be able to get under 250ms which is almost impossible to even notice. Look at Onlive, sure the service has problems but if you got a great connection it plays no different then how it does when you play a game on the disc.
For a MMO you don't even need that good of a connection and as somebody who has put a few hours into DC universe online I cannot feel any latency at all. The reviewer was just pulling #($# out of his ass, especially with his "moves don't work when they are supposed to" which is even more BS, the combat feels great, fluid and well. Infact many reviews have pointed that out and applauded the game for bringing action oriented combat to the MMO genre.
Of course it's not going to be as great as a stand alone action game but this is a MMO and it serves it's purpose on the genre quite well and work's great.
I could spend hours bashing the Giant bomb review but the main gripes are gripes you could direct towards every single MMO ever released.

Look at MMO's like LOTRO, City of Heroes, City of Villians, Champions online, Warhammer online, Age of Conan, Star trek online, these are all games that are currently doing fine and they all suffered bad subscription losses after the first month. DC universe online will have a strong dedicated gaming community for at least a few years and it most likely will go FTP on the PS3 platform before the developers ever let it die.
I believe that right now it is unknown if people just jumped to it because of hype or if it is really an enjoyable game with simple mechanics that many reviewers analyzed as bad but the masses like anyways. For the time being they have a lot of gamers playing. I heard something about adding more server because of demand or something. But it could be PR talk, so like always only time will tell.
[QUOTE="BigBoss255"]I've seen a lot of 8/10 scores.Jaysonguy

It has an average score of 64 on Metacritic.com, but there are only 4 reviews. Lets wait for at least another 10-15 reviews before we make judgment. I actually think the score will get lower to be honest, but we'll see.
**************************************************************************
I expect it to flop on PS3 eventually. Of course people are enjoying the game now, because they are on their 30 day trial. Let's see how they feel about paying 5 months from now.
Grawse
That's what I said. Lets wait 6 months and see if they are still adding new server after that time. See if people are running away from the game like they did with APB.

True, it could be the case. Just remember that to remain afloat LOTRO had to go free to play and they had greater success with that model than with the subscriptions.

Problem with FTP MMO's is in order to be as good as other players you need to pay into the game. i don't like the FTP model but if it's going to keep the game alive then it's a good model to go with. If MMO's like Warhammer, Age of Conan, Star trek, City of heroes/Villians can survive with the subscription model then it'll be awhile before DC is forced to decide between FTP or shutting down. The PS3 version will probably die out before the PC version though, I mean it's a console MMO but it's the only true console MMO the PS3 has and that alone will attract many people to the game and keep it alive for awhile. Look at phantasy star universe online on the 360, the game was alive for years and it was sub based (you had to pay to keep your progress, characters) and it was one of the few console MMO's the 360 had and that's part of the reason it lasted so long.
