Publishers like Activision stamp a price on DLC like COD:WAW new map pack 10 bucks..

Yet epic put out a new 'patch/download' thats over 500mb and includes like 16 maps , new weapons etc... for FREE'

What do you people think about this?
Obviously we all would prefer teh free option but with the latter including much more for free , it just boggles my mind with all the DLC charging thats been going around.
Im not sure but i heard epic released map packs for gears2 but microsoft Charged consumers for it whereas epic wanted it to be free? Im not sure if this is true or not just what i heard a few months ago.

Discuss.

Because I don't think anyone would actually pay for UT3 DLC. The game wasen't very good at all when it came out.

They have the same mentality as MS with Live. If people are going to pay for it, why the hell would they make it free?

Epic's been releasing free content for years, starting with the first Unreal Tournament. Gears of War was the first time they charged, and that's because Microsoft got all pissy about it. Activision charging money isn't much of a surprise (even on the PS3) as they're the new EA. If any publisher would bend you over and sodomize you for a nickel, it would be Activision.

I agree for the first part but UT3 is not a bad game. It has to contend with the most viscious crowd of FPS fanboys there is, PC Gamers. If it isn't exactly like a previous game it gets lambasted for that heracy. Heaven forefend a good stand-alone FPS with cracking graphics, decent maps and a new use of the license.

Yeah, they're all pretty bad. EA has their pay-for-cheats and overpriced Burnout Paradise content, and Capcom has their pay-for-on-disc stuff with overpriced Street Fighter IV costumes and already existing Resident Evil 5 modes.

Pretty much. Burnout Paradise cameout with a free patch and added motorcycles, new modes and new events. But then they charged for the useless stuff in their next DLC

Nah epicgames is getting money hungry also. Microsoft wouldnt force someone to charge money for a download if the dev didnt want to.

The mappack actually looks decent, but the big question is the ps3 mappack free? on playstation network or they charging 10$ like xbox live?

Companies like money, and companies also know people will pay for DLC

Therefore companies will charge for DLC even if they don't have to.

The reason Epic didn't charge for UT3 DLC is because the game wasn't very popular when it released, so free DLC as well as the free weekend deal on Steam were set up to increase popularity, and it worked. 2000% population increase I believe in a one week period.

I can see why dev's charge money for new maps, because the dev has to pay their employee's for their hours spent making the map, the dev's didnt make the maps free of charge. I think this mappack will be released free to pc gamers though, probley out of respect to pc gaming community because call of duty's roots are on pc where it all started.

Mainthing though, probley charging for ps3/360 version maps because consoles dev's had to pay money for dev kits and licensing fee when releasing the game, so trying to get some back.

I don't see how anyone could complain about what Criterion did after they released free content for an entire year. It just goes to show you that people don't appreciate squat. It was amazing feat considering that they are owned by EA who are notorious for having some of the worst DLC content out there.

100% Agree, I wish all devs followed Criterions DLC business model
