If the Xbox 360 fails, it will have failed because the brand loyalty of the Playstation was so strong after two generations of successes that people overlooked the PS3s flaws and bought into it over the 360. Brand loyalty is a dangerous thing to Microsoft - millions of people wear Nikes simply because Nike advertises with famous athletes. People have a perception that a Nike is a better shoe, even if it isn't.
That brand loyalty and image has carried over to the PS3 - ask any Joe Everyman on the street, they think the PS3 is more powerful, even if it isn't. The fact that it came out a year later (it's newer) makes people think it has newer technology, even though the reality is that it was designed around the same time as the 360, and simply hit manufacturing issues
This perception of the Playstation brand is amazing - people will talk about how the PS3 will have more games - then you ask them and they can't name anything other than MGS or FF XIII (we're talking "man on the street" not people in this forum) - some of them can't even name those titles.

If the 360 fails it will be because the strength of the Playstation brand has been built in people's minds to the point where even a perfect console could not compete against it.Â
