Halo is like Mario -- Mario appeals to both the casuals and sheep. Halo appeals to casuals and lemmings.

What defines casual? Does any game that sells a ton and appeals to a broad audience count as casual? "Casual" has such a negative connotation to it, but it might be exactly what developers are hoping for.

Indeed. It's like an awesome shooter version of Madden.

I appeals to both casual and hardcore gamers. There is so much custimization that the hardcore players will get to do whatever they want, but the casual players will also just jump right in. This is part of the reason why it sells so much. Bungie Studios are really genius when you think about it.

Well if Nintendo is casual for appealing to wide variety of people then I'm going to say yes. Mainly because I can't walk into the 7/11 without Master Cheif looking at me.

Games can appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers. Gamers are hardcore or casuals. Games themselves, generally are not.

it is on the easiest level of difficulty. it's like the unreal tournament series. you can adjust the dificulty to make it enjoyable to everyone. on the harder levels and multiplayer it remains challegnging and rewarding to even the best players. if you've never played halo before i think you will enjoy halo3. if you are ranked #1 in halo2 i think you'll enjoy halo3. just dont set the game too easy or hard for your skill level and dont be afraid to change it as you get better. my advice would be to start on the hardest level and go down on the difficulty untill you can suceed.

I'm only aware of 2 halo players in my entire school. One wears a Halo t shirt, the other reads Halo novels during ****

IMO it's a casual game, taken way to seriously by some people.

Halo 1? Not so much.

It doesn't really matter though, Halo 2 is casual in the same way that HS and GoW are casual

Halo is a game. It's not meant to be either casual or hardcore persay. It is however marketed towards everyone and is scalable enough and enjoyable enough that casual and hardcore players can both get into it. It's like a rare breed.

I hate tosay it but it's like Madden. Madden is considered to be casual by many but it's really not, an elite Madden player has to remember and be able to prepare for hundreds of different scenarios. Plus in Madden, like in Halo, the difference in skill level between the best players and the worst players is insurmountable but at the same time the lower skilled player can always get lucky. That's what I call balance.

I believe Halo is more like a sports game than anything. All sports games are casual so Halo is also a casual game.

Yes.:D But seriously, that wasn't really aimed at you as much as it was aimed at todays society in general, including myself. I meant no offense.

statiscal data proves xbox 360 has the most hardcore gamers of any console so its not suprise everyone buys it... its more hardcore then metroid, which still wont sell 1/5 the copies on a larger install base.

Halo is actually one of the few games that can appeal to casual and hardcore alike. The average multiplayer experience is completely casual, although with experienced players it can be quite hardcore. The campaign as well on easy tends to lend itself to casual playing, but on Legendary you can fuggedaboudit - next to NGB, one of the most difficult gaming experiences I've had.

A casual game is something that is somewhat shallow and easy to get into, while a hardcore game requires dedication to succeed. Halo and SSB are both very good examples of games that can cater to both groups. There both somewhat shallow from a first impression, but can be mastered with time and dedication.
