If it is then Sony has won this gen and Microsoft might look to the next XBox rarther sooner than many had hoped.teh_cell
Why would MS make another Xbox if a peripheral format fails?
It's about perception. Now that Blue-ray has won the format war, DVD will be seen as old and dated technology and deveopers will shy away from itteh_cell
If that was a legit concern I'm sure MS would address it,but seeing how the dev's aren't uneducated blind consumers, I don't see them abandoning a proven format like DVD for an unproven gaming format like Blu-Ray or even HD-DVD is that were an option.

No casual user knows what blu ray OR hd-dvdis yet. So I doubt it.
When i had my PS3 i could tell the difference from a Blu-Ray movie and a regular DVD movie, but not by much. After 10 minutes of watching you forget its even in HD! Blu-Ray isnt needed and wanted, yet...
Now the game developers will be looking at Blu-Ray as the next storage media for games and this has already having a small effect on the way games are developed. This will mean that if MS wants to stay in the gaming market they will have to release another console much sooner than planed.jimm895
Why? Because developers want to press their games on a Blu-Ray disc rather than a 2 layered-DVD? Lol your logic is very hilarious

Ah... Yeah that too. But what I meant is that no casual user (ie my mum) even knows about these new formats. They know what hd is, but they've only just understood dvds (the mass market, that is). You cant really have a perception of something you dont know exists.
If it is then Sony has won this gen and Microsoft might look to the next XBox rarther sooner than many had hoped.teh_cellThe new Xbox will be out in 2010 or 11, maybe it will have Blu-Ray in it, it's just a format. I may not think it was needed for gaming but I didn't let it keep me from buying a PS3.
As a gamer sometimes you sacrifice your principals and your money in order to play the games you want to play.
The next format may not be as lucrative as DVD.
For one thing, you can get an excellent picture out of DVD players. Yes, I know BluRay and HD-DVD are better, but its not like comparing VHS to DVD. DVD makes VHS look pitiful, but difference between DVD and the new formats, for me at least, is not enough to make me rush out and buy it.
Also, the new formats have to compete with more and morewith direct download technology.
So MAYBE the bluray format will be best used by the PS3 after all. Time will tell

Your logic fails you do know that HD is in only 35 to 40 precent of homes most people still have SD and good old DVD players and are in no rush to change. So if Blue Ray wins it still wont have an impact for aleast 5 to 6 years.

Exactly. Once Blu-Ray is improved picture wise, then maybe it would be in demand. But until then, DVD is still the winner

your percentages actually seem very high. i thought it was like 20 tops.

I was trying to give them a number that was ok but not to big. I know it is around there some place but still it is a small precent

Whats unprooven about more disc space? Just because it may not be 100% necesarry at the moment doesnt mean it doesnt work.[QUOTE="flazzle"]The next format may not be as lucrative as DVD.

What? Have you seen a 1080p movie on a 58'' screen?

Are you implying the average person would be willing to buy a 1080p 56" tv to see the difference in blu-ray? Really?

Sony won what this gen, format wars or console wars? Because they're still dead last with the PS3.

No. He said that the picture on blu ray needs to improve. I'm saying watch it on a big screen and you'll see there's no need for improvements.

You are forgetting that by Feb. 9 2009 there will no longer be a analog signal broadcast from any TV studio or any other TV service because the government in the US is forceing them to make the change at that time. So after that date many older TV's will not work without a converter box and some may not work even with the converter box. So this will have people that aren't sure about what is happening going HD before this date. That is just a little over a year from now.

Key word he said is "if."

Had the 360 intigrated a HD-DVD drive since launch,
Perhaps.
But the fact that Blu-Ray has won doesn't change PS3's gaming library, or lack there of.

With regards to the 'Have you seen a 1080p movie ona 58'' screen. I have, and it's awsome! But even after then going home and watching DVD's on my 32'', the picture is excellent as well. NOT as good as 1080p, obviously, but no so much the difference that I feel I'm missing out on anything.
I don't mind waiting to upgrade to the next format. Don't feel any need for it, personally. When my tv dies or I get extra money, then I will upgrade. BluRay or HD-DVD do NOT make DVD's look like VHS, at least to me.
So I wouldn't be surprised if people don't rush to the format like they did DVD.

Well, at 32" you won't see a difference with blu ray. You really have to get up in the 42"+ area to notice it. That's all I'm saying...

Yeah, I hear ya. And I can't wait until that day for myself. But I'm happy with what I got and it will have to do.
Now, if I had VHS everywhere (which looks crappy everywhere) you better believe I would be upgrading up.
My point is, I believe there are more people like me that have no need to spend much money upgrading equipment and rebuying movies. And by the time most people are, a new and better format may be available.

Not really. Have you ever seen the small HDTV's on display at best buy? If they're playing a Blu-ray or HD DVD movie, you're not going to up and tell me the difference between that and DVD is small. Picture quality wise, the resolution for DVD and VHS is roughly the same, whereas the HD formats go up to 1080p. You would think this format is the much more noticable jump.
Edit: Did any of you happen to try comparing blu ray and DVDs on Standard def tv's? Cuz there will be no difference.
[QUOTE="teh_cell"]If it is then Sony has won this gen and Microsoft might look to the next XBox rarther sooner than many had hoped.Shazenab
Why? Because having movie studios backing the format makes game developers rush into a state of panic too? =/
Warner Bros make the best games, lemmings miss out.here's a graph, although you can add new line and warner to bluray:
right now HDDVD's biggest supporter is Viacom, which includes Paramount, DreamWorks, and Nickelodeon. They also still have universal
Hey, if you're a video game fan looking to get a bluray player why not just get a ps3? You'll maybe pay a bit more but why not?

HD DVD is not dead, but it's very close. All it needs is for one more major studio to go Blu-Ray exclusive, and that will be it. And if the rumors about Paramount are true, that may be in the near future.
Once that happens, Toshiba will have no choice but to concede defeat and then back Blu-Ray. Then you will see all partners in Blu-Ray form a universal standard that will most likely make Blu-Ray compatible with HD DVD movies that are already out there in circulation. That way current owners of HD DVD won't be totally screwed over.

Well I own a 47 inch LCD that supports 1080i so I guess Blu-Ray only looks ok to me and I'm not getting the full effect, but to FORCE me to buy a larger more expensive TV for a few more pixels in orderto enjoy what Sony feels is "the future" is insane. The benefits should be there for all HD TV's. I'm not about to spend more money on a TV to fully utilize Blu-Ray because they aren't willing to cater to other HD TV's.
