So is the Wii still a fad that will eventually stop selling?

You've probably read it here or heard it before

• The nostalgia will where off and people will grow tired

• The PS3 will win back Japan and become the number one selling console

Eventually stop selling? Yes (when Nintendo upgrades and stops making them)

I believe that the wii will sell until the wii 2, and then nintendo will be left without casuals (it wont be new and exciting anymore) and hardcore gamers.

Edit: So it will sell for the duration of the gen.

as for Wii... not my cup o' tea. I'm sure people have/will enjoy it but I personally think its step in away from the long term gaming fan. It is no doubt a good introductory console for first time gamers and some nostalgic or eccentric gamers. There is a good chance that a majority of the new gamer demographic will A) stop playing or B) move on to a more advanced gaming type. The third option is also possible, people continuing to support Nintendo *shrug*. But like I said before, that's just my opinion. Chances Nintendo will saturate the market with a few mil more units then enter a lull wile others will establish a firm foothold.

We can only hope it will stop selling. And the non gamer casuals the scurge of the gaming industry get bored and stop wasting there money on trash. If Wii continues to sell, it will lead industry into ruin, it will be a shambles. We'll all be lured into playing 1 button kiddy games for the rest of our gaming days.

No one is disputing sales. What people are disputing is what those sale numbers actually represent. I personally don't feel that the Wii sells allot because its a paradigm of gaming architecture. I feel it's a success due to to a brilliant marketing campaign, price and a uninformed and/or inexperienced public. Now that's not to say that there aren't games for a more "hardcore base", but I find those titles to be far to sparse. That happens to be why I have the opinion that Wii's sales are volatile and could possibly change at any time.

whether or not sales== or =/= quality has nothing to do with the topic at hand. there would be no reason for anybody to acknolowledge that here. the topic starter specifically wrote the following: "Arguments on games, online, hardware, whatever aside." this thread is about sales. stick to the topic at hand.

i believe that the wii has been built from the ground up to have mainstream appeal that the PS3/360 lack. it is successfull due to it's innovative user interface. for that reason it will continue to sell the most by a wide margin.

we'll see who's right a year or two from now.

I like the wii as an idea.

What are consoles? Are they just cheap, glorified pc's that are ultimately an inferior product? Nintendo is the only one of the three console companies that doesn't think so. That has changed however, and rest assured that all consoles in the future will take a lesson from the wii.

The wii has it's problems though. The next wii or the next wii copy will be better. Better controllers, better hardware, and better games as a result.

Not atm, but it is possible. When the PS2 finally stops selling, the perception of it's success can possibly consider it a fad (though I think it would be a reflection on gaming and consoles in general having no large competition for a time). As it stand right now a growing number of people do consider the Wii to be a fad even among owners and previous owners. The difference between the two in demographic and presentation is apparent.
