So It Begins: Sony Ends Shipments of PS Vita In Netherlands

The PS Vita is finally at the end of its life.

Sony are stopping shipments of the handheld to Netherlands, and stores are telling customers that the system is out of stock and not anticipated to be in stock anytime soon. Bol.com, one of the biggest online retailers in the Netherlands, is currently the only store with stock left- it has a grand total of two PS Vita units in stock, the final two in the country. It has answered customer queries with 'the PS Vita is [at] the end of its life,' indicating that no further shipments are planned. Sony themselves declined to comment.

Its actually kinda sad how the Vita fared especially after the PSP the one and only dedicated handheld gaming system that could actually compete with Nintendo handheld offerings.

I hope they don't make a new handheld, unless they get their act together.

When something fails in gaming like Kinect or PS move, I don't care because those are garbage, but it really saddens me when a fantastic handheld like the Vita fails

I agree. So far, at any rate. I have an inkling this is the year the PS4 finally pulls ahead of the Vita (and Wii U. And 3DS).

Yeah, it's a shame that they ditched Vita support so soon.

Nintendo is our last hope for a proper handheld going forward.

I would rather that they do, even if they didn't get their act together- the PSP and PS Vita are both incredible.

I mean, the Vita is still a great system, and it managed to still be the second highest selling non Nintendo handheld of all time, and it managed this in a post smartphone and tablet world- there's no shame in that.

5 years passed since its original release more or less , so its all good imho. Thats the maximum time each generation should last because then games becoming stale and feel boring ( majority even ).

So i dont get the fuss about this , specially if in that market theres zero interest for Vita let alone when SONY is still in a multibillion loss all these years let alone that 5 years ( dec 2011 ) passed already more or less.

By me talking about VITA and the whole situation SONY is in the last 10 years , then you respond to me while talking about Wii you weeding out the hypocrisy ? Well done ! I think my past facts and opinions over Wii marked you big time , im glad. :P

And if you wanna do it officially with facts , im in ! Its up to you , so you dont think ill back up to what i said about Wiis situation before.

The Vita launched in 2012. Support dropped for it in 2014, by 2015 it was called a 'legacy system' by none other than Sony themselves, who explicitly made it very clear that it would get no game support from them going forwards. In 2016, shipments for it are ceasing.

That means that game support stopped 2 years after launch, it was officially denoted a legacy system 3 years after launch, and shipments stopped 4 years after launch. There is no math by which it comes to '5 years long' to begin with. Secondly, the '5 years is all good IMO' ignores just how long lived handhelds usually are- the Gameboy lasted 13 years, the DS lasted 9 years, the PSP lasted 10 years, the 3DS is in its 6th year. The Vita couldn't even make it to 4.

This means that this- 'i dont get the fuss about this , specially if in that market theres zero interest for Vita let alone when SONY is still in a multibillion loss' no longer holds. To be fair, I can sort of understand- you thought that the Vita was 5 years old, so discontinuation was fair- it's not unfair to argue for discontinuation of a system after it has at least had a full life, especially if there is no interest for it. However, as I have hopefully cleared up for you, the Vita never had a full life, and 5 years is not the full lifespan for a handheld- Sony basically ended support for it just 2 years in, and handhelds typically last longer than 5 years (the lowest life cycle a successful handheld had was the GBA, and that came in at 6 years long).

VITA was never a success , sales were pathetic so that led to subpar support from both SONY and 3rd parties. That doesnt mean system didnt have its moments with some great games here and there.

Then if you really want to make this VITA vs Wii ... When SONY has all the excuses to let VITA die by the fact that nor VITA sold any good nor SONY is in a state to withstand its state while being in a financial epic loss then NINTENDO with Wii had tremendous sales and profits , 100+million of sales and a god know how much cash with tremendous sales of their 1st party games and still , Wii became dust collector.

So , does that mean im defending VITA ? It failed big time so no. But im defending SONY though.

Because when a company is in a serious loss of this caliber and they discontinue VITA from a single market after 4-5 years , so be it , whats the big deal about it ? Its not like VITA sold 100M units or SONY is in a good state to keep supporting it despite its pathetic sales and all nor that 4-5 years is too short to begin with for this kind of fail product to not be supported at all in a single country on earth.

That's a shame. Hopefully they have plans for a new handheld coming out.

With phones and tablets dedicated handheld gaming systems are on their way out. Sony would be smart not to release another one and focus on phones.

I think we should be applauding their effort into the handheld market. I mean the PSP was the only handheld that held it's own against Nintendo. No other company can say that.

That's a shame. Well here's to hoping Sony has finally learned their lesson in regards to over priced proprietary memory cards before they attempt the PSP4. Yep I still hate the name Vita. It's a Playstation Portable not a over priced water.

@AzatiS: It only launched in one country in December- Japan. The worldwide release was February 2012.

The other points still stand:

• The Vita had support dropped for it in 2014 (2 years after global launch, 3 years after Japanese launch)
• The Vita was denoted a legacy system in 2015 (3 years after global launch, 4 years after Japanese launch)
• The Vita saw shipments getting discontinued in 2016 (4 years after global launch, 4 and a half after Japanese)
• Handhelds generally last nearly 10 years- even the lowest lived handhelds have at least been 6 years, and the Vita couldn't even get 2/3rds of the way there

You are defending Sony because the interest was never there and they were making a loss- yet I see you hate on Nintendo for discontinuing the Wii U, when the Wii U also was a failure from the get go and lost Nintendo money? When developer interest in Wii U was even lower? When Nintendo at least tried to support the Wii U with flagship games for a full four years? When Wii U will at least get to four full years before Nintendo gives up on it, as opposed to Vita, which Sony publicly disowned just two years in?
