I don't know why anyone thought that it would be such a massive graphics Jump. If you follow Nintendo, and how they operate, that's simply not how Nintendo runs things. Nintendo are very cost and price effective, and furthermore, you will notice a trend in SIMILAR graphics with their handhelds.
There are some small differences, as we are dealing with old consoles to newer handhelds, but it essentially breaks down like this :
GB - NES/SMS generational graphics ish
GBA - SNES/Genesis generational graphics ish
DS - N64/PSOne/Saturn generational graphics ish
3DS - Gamecube/PS2/Dreamcast/Xbox generational graphics ish
----------
Also, developers get more power and better graphics out of the 3DS if the developers DO NOT implement the 3D effects. So, that is something else to consider.
Of course, it's a neat handheld, and it appears to be coming at the $300 price point.
GB was no where near the level of NES graphics, GBA was pretty clos. DS, maybe mario 64 thats it. 3DS gc? Hell no.I don't know why anyone thought that it would be such a Jump. There was some differences as I noted, but that's how it breaks down. Either way, the 3DS isn't going to be on par with the PS360 graphics, and it never was going to. Nintendo is a smart company, they are giving us PSP+ish graphics 5 years after the PSP hit the scene, but the key is, this machine is an improvement over the DS, and has Nintendo properties.
Fans will eat it up, and it has a lot of hype, not to mention people are jazzed about 3D right now.
I know your just trying to get two similar matching environmental screens so to make a reasonable comparison between the 3DS and PSP, but you chose the worst looking Revelations screen that is available. It's barely an accurate representation. Judging by the trailer and new screens Revelations looks a lot better than what your trying to garner in this thread.
Seeing as Revelations is a 1st cycle 3DS release, it looks amazing. Nothing on PSP (even the best looking games) touch the 3DS. And to add to my response, look at the new MGS 3D trailer.
EDIT>>>>>> didnt realize you were comparing Mercenaries. You do know there are other better looking 3DS games than Mercenaries. Looks like your trying to manipulate this thread in your favor.
all I know is that with the MegaMan legends 3 announcement as a 3ds exclusive I'm offiically pissed at Capcom, I've been waiting for it since the ps1, and now i have to buy a whole new system to get it? yeah I'm tapped out this generation I scrapped and scraped to together the money for all the systems this generation, I have no extra funds to get a 3ds....so yeah to hell with you capcom and by extension Nintendo but most of all ************** capcom I loved MML 1 and 2 and I've waited paitently buying your other MM games and now your gonna stiff me on a current gen hd mml3? ***************
Barely on par? Mercenaries clearly has all around sharper textures and more shadow detail (especially compared to GoW).

Game Boy Color was basically NES quality. Game Boy Advance was superior to the SNES.

who said it was on part with the 360/ps3? I hear more of it being close to xbox/gamecube.
People over hyped the hell out of this thing, as they always do. Of course it doesn't stand anywhere near the standards of the current gen consoles. It's a handheld for god's sake.
The 3DS is pretty much an Xbox1 and a GC in your HANDS. Now stop whining and take the awesome graphics as it is.IantheoneIt really isn't. The day it can play the Resident Evil remake at the same standards as the gamecube version won't come in the 3DS' lifespan
Only the rabbid were saying that, if we go by history and common sense, it was clearly going to be in the 6th gen ball park. You might have been confused when people said it can do techniques the 360/PS3 can (some shaders or w/e).
Anyway the games we've seen are first gen and they still look better than end gen PSP games. Thats natural and happens every gen. Games like Chaos Theory, NGB, Riddick, HL2 were comparable to 1st gen PS3/360 games and in some cases looked better (anyone remember all those Xbox/PS2/GC vs 360 graphics thread in 2005 . Same with Conker 64 on the N64 when compared to 1st gen Dreamcast games. As devs find better ways of using the hardware, graphics will improve naturally.
Anyone who seriously thought 3DS was going to come close to PS3 or Xbox 360 level graphics was delusional.
It looks slightly better than the PSP, around the original Xbox level I'd say with a couple of modern graphics techniques thrown in for good measure. It's only in SD but the graphics are true 3D so that makes up for that. Obviously I wouldn't complain if the system was even more powerful but in my opinion that is good enough to keep me happy with the systems fully 3D visuals.
It really isn't. The day it can play the Resident Evil remake at the same standards as the gamecube version won't come in the 3DS' lifespanThe_Gaming_Baby
REmake used prerendered backgrounds. Considering what Capcom has already managed in their full 3D. first generation 3DS titles, I'm positive the system could technically handle the aforementioned.
Um, did you not read much earlier that the 3DS graphics was going to be roughly the same as the Gamecube's graphics?
Here you go TC. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPCsFAmIxCM&feature=player_embeddedjohny300
I think this should pretty much blow the TC and every other nay sayer out of the water. For me it still looks in-between the Wii and Xbox 360 / PS3
Agreed. I don't think many on here believed it would surpass the 360 or PS3. The PSP was more realistic.3DS is not even close to PS3/360, but it is superior to the PSP in every way possible.
waltefmoney
A lot of people did. It was ridiculous anyways. It doesn't look any better than the PSP. Hopefully, the PSP2 will have something more than this crap.No one said the 3DS would have PS3/360 graphics. :|
Silverbond
I think the graphics are rather impressive. The screenshots don't do the games justice, in the same way that KZ3 looks better in motion than in still-form.
So we're continuing this little "360/PS3 graphics" fiction?
After E3, no one in their right mind thought the 3DS was on 360/PS3 level. It was obvious where the 3DS was at graphically, and none of what we saw yesterday contradicts that.
It seems like every time something is revealed about the 3DS, someone moves the goalposts and pretends to be disappointed.

I thought we might have grown out of the "use bad screen shot of game to bash, use best screenshot of opposing game, be objective and unbiased" thing, but here we are.
Way to use a screenshot of an in-development launch title, on a small screened console, against the most advanced game on the PSP, that came out years after launch.
Now how about showing some 3DS games in motion?
Metal Gear looks like a first gen 360 title, imo. The texture res is lower, but as far a geometry--it looks like a 360 game. I'd place the visuals between GC/Xbox and 360.
