So much for the PGR4 running out of disk space rumors.

As I'm sure you've seen, some of the comments made on our forum have been blown out of all proportion. This has been reported on certainwebsites. It seems that a number of fanboys have jumped on the topic... sigh. So it's time we cleared this one up...

When we started designing PGR4 our primary goals were to create a great and unique experience over and above PGR3, to push the hardware as far as we could, and obviously to ensure that we give great value for money. DVD size is absolutely not a factor that we consider when designing our games... and PGR4 is no exception. DVD9 gives us more than we need to create a fabulous experience for you guys.

The previous game, PGR3, had five environments. That's how much we could create given our time and resources for that game. With the longer development cycle we've had for PGR4, as well as the advantage of having final hardware, we wanted to create a far bigger and better game by this time including 10 environments, as well as a whole bunch of new gameplay features.

Rather than having two "fixed" times of day, this time around we decided to use our time to create a dynamic weather system, which effectively creates a much more dramatic palette from which to work with. To show you where we're coming from, have a look at this screenshot crop sheet. This is something we use internally to compare our environments, lighting, and weather effects... but it's certainly useful for demonstrating the breadth of the game here!

We've never had to cut content to fit on the disc, and we probably never will.

Each next-gen format has its own merits. We should know, as we're currently developing games for all of them in one form or another. It's not a case of one system having less of this, and the other having more of that. As developers we are given a fixed platform, and that's what we work with. At the end of the day we're games developers, and we try to create the best we can irrespective of platform. We hope you end up agreeing with our design decisions when you see the game for yourself.

They didn't cut it, they just never made it because they knew they didn't have room in the first place.

I've noticed this but decided not to say anything because it's not how to survive in SW: to bring up the whole article instead of selecting the part that helps your argument in SW. Even if debunked in the same article.

Jesus are we back with the disk space argument.

As a neutral and a massive lover of the PS1 and the adorable PS2 I STILL believe that BR has hindered the PS3.

Compression can ruin an experience especially in film and audio. But for game players who dont usually have a thousand pound sound system and a 44inch+ HD high optimized TV/monitor they are not gonna notice that difference if the same game was compressed and optimized for DVD.

IMO its a shame PS3 has BR as I've always supported pushing forward and Sony usually has done that with CD on PS1 and DVD on PS2. Is BR a step to far.... Yes it is coz the industry is not ready for BR unlike when it was ready to move onto DVD. There are huge differences in quality but not enough to make people swap yet to a HD format.

So why is the gaming industry leading this new format when it should be films and then games embracing it in a few years.

The slow read speeds of BRare also a nuisance to console gaming...

I boo on BR and HDDVD... and Im a tech freak who doesnt believe these formats are good enough for the next gen of medium formats.

"Given that it is impossible to fit everything on one disk, I think this is the best solution. I would rather have 10 weather effects across all locations vs Day/Night in all locations. BC's reasoning is valid too, Las Vegas just isn't as cool during the day so why waste space/resource having it in the game. You can have (for example) either Vegas x 2 (Day and Night) or Vegas x 10, I know which I would choose."

"In the past we've always had day and night and to do this we've had to create a duplicate set of textures for most of the buildings, obviously there is the space on the disc and the time it will take make all those night time textures."

You were saying, TC?

...take it up with the actual developers not the TC buddy. they said those statements are false.

you're just actively trying to find things to hate on. get over it.

Slow BD speeds a nuisance to console gaming? Please dude - For one thing, in terms of streaming content Blu-Ray is, and will always be superior. And any issues with the PS3's slow BD drive is sovled for the most part from caching the data on the HDD - that's half the reason the things there to begin with.

And I disagree with anything trying to pass off that DVDs will remain sufficient throughout this console generation. I'll agree Sony put the BD player in the PS3 for reasons not just relating to gaming - this format war is bigger than the console war without a doubt. With the PS3 Blu-Ray was pretty much guaranteed to win, and, it has won... unless the Blu-Ray association is some how exploded, and all BD supporters suddenly move to HD-DVD... this format war is a rap.
