It seems like every single next-gen game is taking about how open the world is. And every multiplayer game is talking about how persistent the game is.
Seems kinda like a waste, to have so many similar games.

Pretty much, It pleagued PC gaming this gen, and now Console gaming in the next -.- They sure do love to shove us into mmo-like games don't they?
I think open world has been the ambition for the well over the last decade. I love open world when its done well and dont have a problem with this.
I'm really not in the mood to start demanding more coridoor shooters.
The devision lookes like one of the coolest games at E3.
If you narrow it down to the select games that fit your example then sure but there are hundreds of good games are released across the various systems each gen. The next gen hasn't even really started yet but I see no reason it won't be the same you can't generalize hundreds of games like that whatever we saw at E3 was only a small amount of games that will release this gen.

Pretty much this. Open world and tablets for everything.
i'm glad.
i love open world.
i can't wait to see what the next gen red dead looks like.
i am pretty positives that will be rockstars 1st ps4/x1 game since they will give the gta franchise a rest for a few years after gta 5 comes out.
I hope not, MMO genre holds no appeal to me, and having a big open world for the sake of being big doesn't tend to end well. Nothing wrong with linear and more focused games, the only problem is, these days, gamers started to believe a linear game is synomymous with a game that takes control away from the player every few seconds, which definitely doesn't need to be the case.
But they are. Drive/ride somewhere complete missions. Rinse and repeat.Just because games are open world and large doesn't mean they have to be the same.
That's like saying GTA 4 and RDR are exactly the same because they are both open world games from Rockstar.

I honestly prefer a more linear single player game when I decided to actually play single player. I don't really see the appeal of open world games, when they all have linear objectives.there is nothing wrong with a well condstructed linear game with a good focus on its core mechanics.

[QUOTE="heretrix"]But they are. Drive/ride somewhere complete missions. Rinse and repeat.Well, if you want to over simplify it sure, but you can oversimplify most games to their bare mechanics and they will be similar. The thing that separates most games is how they differentiate from each other, the subtleties that make two similar games feel different. Traveling around Liberty City in GTA 4 is vastly different than galloping around Mexico in RDR. You may be doing the same thing (going from one place to another) but the way you are doing it makes all of the difference.Just because games are open world and large doesn't mean they have to be the same.

I don't see the issue.
If done well, massive, persistent and "living" open worlds can only add to the games.
There is a reason why games like MGS V, X, The Witcher 3 and The Division are hyped. (for other than only graphics)
Open world is the best kind of games there is and if those open world game have as much content as an MMO (hoping Destiny to be like that) then why would any1 bitch about it? I want this
I think there needs to be distinction between a sandbox and an open world game, games next generation would be more sandbox like not open world, sure a lot of games would eventually move into that open world theme but in my opinion thats selling it short, sandbox is the word that i feel is appriopriate
I fail to see how everything is becoming an mmo. There was one mmo that was announced, the Division. Big open world doesnt an mmo make.
Because open world games are nearly always weak in multiple areas compared to other styles of games?Open world is the best kind of games there is and if those open world game have as much content as an MMO (hoping Destiny to be like that) then why would any1 bitch about it? I want this

We're already seeing that transition this gen, with games like Batman: Arkham City and Darksiders 2, and the upcoming Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.
I'm okay with this transition if the games continue to be great, but I've got to say I hope there's still quality titles in the linear, point A to point B games. There's enough room in the industry for both types of games and sometimes I just want a linear, God of War-like experience instead of trying to decide which end of the map to start traveling towards.
PC gamers complained a lot about about games like Uncharted cuz they linear. Yet they like stuff like Metro :? I hope linear games dont go extinct.
Not into MMOs, but more open world games? Yes please!
Red Dead Redemption, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim are some of the best current gen games for a reason. Too bad, that Rockstar and Bethesda were some of the few devs who had balls to go through the hard route, instead of just making 6 hour scripted movies.
Next gen will be amazing
I'm really looking forward to buying the Watch Dogs DLC. Day f*cking one (literally)!!!Yep. also more microtransactions and DLC.

I found it interesting that western media has been pushing for open world vs scripted before it even made sense because it was making games worse.
(Making a game open world can lead to various hazard zones such as: broken leveling, unclear zoning, meaningless characters, tons of unforeseen bugs (that can be funny or completely immersion/game breaking), boring side quests, broken economic system, noticable reused assets in very different locations, broken A.I., etc.)
[QUOTE="Zaibach"]I honestly prefer a more linear single player game when I decided to actually play single player. I don't really see the appeal of open world games, when they all have linear objectives. Not only linear, but also rather repetitive. I'm not a big fan of open world but I think the new tech may offer something new. Strangely, Watchdogs is the game I'm most excited to play. Though a large part of that is being from Chicago.there is nothing wrong with a well condstructed linear game with a good focus on its core mechanics.

Good. Now we can all start hating on that genre and say it's ruining the industry.freedomfreak
Indeed....MMOs and open world games will probably be the next cool thing to hate.
2 or 3 years ago, thought that core gaming was about to die, that next gen would be all about motion controls and that the jump from 360/PS3 to Xbox3/PS4 would be minimal? Well, now that both consoles are factual and about to come out, all those pessimistic thoughts were proved wrong. Core gaming is Sony and MS's main focus, X1 and PS4 are 10+ times more powerful than current gen platforms, new IPs have been being announced, etc, etc...
It's hard to please these kids, these days lol
I prefer this to what happened last gen. Everything was turning into a linear hand-holdy cinematically driven game. I want to participate in my games damn it!
True! The wannabe cinematic experiences were pretty horrible. The 'solution' of making you press forward during a cutscene and proceeding to make half the game a cutscene did not work for me!I prefer this to what happened last gen. Everything was turning into a linear hand-holdy cinematically driven game. I want to participate in my games damn it!
