The game comes out 1/31/12, and I haven't even seen anyone mentioning it at all here.
Where's the love? :(
Is no one excited for SoulCalibur V?

Fighters are the least evolved genre it seems. :o I have been saying for a decade or more that what's needed is a sorta Fighter / RPG with story and action sequences on the road to your next fight, done much better but say similar to what Shenmue tried to pull off. :D
Do that and I'll no doubt become a fan of fighters once again. :P

Looks like you want a beat em up, not a fighting game.
I think the problem with Soul Calibur is that the game still feels the same with every iteration. exiledsnake
and if it changed people would still complain forcing the devs to go back to its roots, just like mortal kombat.

Naruto: ROTN is probably the closest thing to that, well at least as far as this gen goes.
You should check it out. Well, if playing as a "ninja" in an orange jumpsuit doesn't bother you. :P

Nah, I think it's quite possible these days to have the complexity and looks of a fighter like SC along with a compelling story, action, and leveling of your character in between fights so as to take out what I think has become very stale just going for one fight to next over & over.

Isn't that what they did for Soul Calibur: Origins for the Wii?

I honestly don't know, never tried it and sold the Wii as I was no fan of using Wiimote & nunchuck for everything - give me a duel analog sticks & triggers any day of the week. :Pnah i cant say i am and im a huge fighting game fan. Ive never been a huge fan of 3d Fighters outside of tekken. The roster for SC5 was also a huge turn off for me. I hate the look off all of the new characters and they most of the returning characters are my least fav. The only two people in that game i actually like are mitsurugi and Ivy. I think im gonna stick to SF4, KOF, SFxT and TTT2 this year.

The point of a fighter is to fight against other people and get better, not level up through artificial means or play for the "story".

Soul Calibur 2 had a really fun story mode. Unlock new weapons, outfits and such and do fun little challenges. I had more fun doing that than actually playing other people.

The point of a RPG was to point & click with a mouse and sometimes it was only all text  I for one am happy that's not the case anymore and the genre EVOLVED. :P[QUOTE="exiledsnake"]I think the problem with Soul Calibur is that the game still feels the same with every iteration. lazerface216

Well, they have to at least try or its gonna get stale. I bet if MK never tried to change, MK9 wouldn't have been as well-liked as it is now. And SF4 is pretty different from SF3 and fans aren't too bugged about it.[QUOTE="Yangire"]

The gameplay has become more focused on action, but there's a limit of how far something can stray from the basics of the genre.
Sounds like what you want is a single-player beat em up with RPG elements. Fighting games are competitive and probably always will be, if you don't want to face against other people and get better than the genre isn't made for you.

False choice since futher evolving the genre doesn't exclude the fundamentals of the genre, Ya know, like playing in SP leveling a charater say in a dungen crawler then taking that character on-line for some straight up vs mode. :oFurthermore, the dev, can also make options for on-line vs that would exclude any leveling the player did to the character in essence nullifying things and return character balance exclusively for fair fight.
Don't let'em fool ya since there are ways to do this ya know whilst retaining the competivness nature of the genre it just takes more critical thinking and oh yeah.... Effort. :P
Already have my limited edition pre-ordered at Best Buy! Can't wait to pick this game up next Tuesday!

And here we have someone who doesn't know a thing about fighters.
Anyway, i'm not interested in SCV because of IV and sadly V looks a lot like that one, so my hype was killed almost right away. Besides what's the point of taking out iconic characters and replace them with clones of those characters? And with games like BB Extended, SkullGirls, DOA5 and even MK Komplete Edition coming out this year...yeah, i'm really not interested in SCV.

Them be fighten words, on guard...Anyhoo, this guy that knows nothing about fighters was dropping quarters into arcade fighting games before you were even a spot in your old man's underwear. :P
Actually TC....no...............nobody cares about SC because most gamers have moved on from fighting games. I never like them..only the 1st MK was playable for me.

Dude, just because you played MvC2 on the arcades doesn't make you an expert.
This. I've been saying the same. The fact that most of them have a still-picture with badly fonted text is terrible. I was around when fighting games began, and I expected them to grow alongside hardware, the fact that they didn't is terrible and the reason why they don't sale very well anymore and have such a narrow market.Fighters are the least evolved genre it seems. :o I have been saying for a decade or more that what's needed is a sorta Fighter / RPG with story and action sequences on the road to your next fight, done much better but say similar to what Shenmue tried to pull off. :D

You clearly don't know what you're talking about. You got into them after the fact and think that all they can be is what they were. Fighters are supposed to get deeper, not more shallow and that includes the story. There is a reason that the most successful games are the ones that had the most back story.[QUOTE="SecretPolice"]This. I've been saying the same. From your statement alone, i can guess that you aren't a hardcore fighting game fan, at a competitive level. There is a reason why fighters stay the way they do. Dedicated fighting game players investyears of practiceinto a particular game. Devs understand this, and don't want to upset those players by suddenly redefining the genre entirely.
Take Tekken fans for example, who have on average spent 4 to 5 years on Tekken 5 and6 alone, countless days in the arcade playing with others. Do you think these people will appreciated it if say...Tekken 7 suddenly becomes a Fighter/RPG hybrid? Devs can include thatgameplay aspect as a feature, but not as the core gameplay. Besides, most fighters rely a lot on their arcade releases, and having non-arcadish gameplay will literally kill the arcade market.
Bottom line is, fighters stay the way they do, pretty much the same wayas howStarcraft 2 isn't radically different from Starcraft 1. Starcraft is a sport in some countries, and you can change it up a little, but you can't do something which would completely destroy the sport. That's pretty much the way it is with fighters. In fact, by definition alone, a game that isn't just 2 sides beating each other up, isn't technically a fighting game. So you shouldn't be asking why a fighting game behaves like a fighting game
