So now that HD-DVD is officially canned, what does that mean for the PS3?

Personally IMO I see tons of people not going out to buy HD-DVD players, obviously. But, instead picking up PS3's.

The PS3 is now seriously in the same position as the PS2 was. The cheapest* next-gen player and also a game console. A practical choice for many. These things are gonna fly off the shelves just like the PS2 did.

Also since this was announced so early on in the year, in a time when most people aren't really buying (the "golden quarter" is done), then once this announcement actually affects the store shelves people will be buying again.

Yep, 2008 is Playstation's year.

I have many more points to add, but let's see how this plays out.

edit* OK maybe not the cheapest anymore. But it has the most value and bang for your buck.

If HD-DVD truly is dead, then its a big win for sony, but we probably wont see any major impact until maybe mid 2009. When the price is between £150-£200 (or most likely $250-$300) for a PS3, the adoption rate then will sky-rocket. Right now, the install base for HDTVs is way too small, but in a year or so, since most TVs being sold are HD, there will be a real sifference made.

Well I see tons of people picking up HDTV's in 2008 compared to 2007, especially in the holiday season due to one simple thing that the US government is doing.

This action will see an increase of HDTV's in the homes of Americans by more than 150%!

It won't mean much of anything for the ps3. It is going to do about the same regardless of how successful blu-ray is or isn't.

Did I just read that right? Are you kidding? Blu-ray was dominant over HD-DVD BECAUSE of the PS3. See the relation?

The PS3 is not the cheapest blu-ray player, you should really shop around before saying that. It does seem to be the most reliable though.

Id be surprised if this does much of anything. Yes, it will net Sony some sales. I wouldnt bet too many though. There are cheaper Blu-Ray players (many more come CES) and the PS3 is hardly full featured when it comes to playing Blu-Ray movies.

I believe the Ps3 BD player is one of the best on the market. With the ability to d/l firmware updates as soon as they come out you can't go wrong with the ps3

It wont make much difference because people are not upgrading to HDDVD/Blu-Raynearly as fast as they went to DVD. Most people cant tell the difference and dont want to buy all the same movies over again. It will be past 2010 before DVD is surpased and by then it wont matter.

Very few will buy the ps3 just because it plays blu-ray movies ...... if they buy it , they will buy it because it is a playstation(games) and they are able to afford it. Blu-ray is always going to be a secondary thing , a distant second (just like DVD). There won't be a huge boon for the ps3 because of blu-ray , just like there would't be a huge negative effect if it failed.

I understand that the ps3 helped blu-ray software sales (at least over HD-DVD) , but I am not convinced that blu-ray movies really helped ps3 sales (or will helpin the future). Blu-ray is a nice bonus don't get me wrong and it will be nice to have that extra value in there for a lot of gamers , but lets not get ahead of ourselves.

It will be a sad sad day whenany ps3 future success is largely attributed to blu-ray instead of the the real reason it will succeed (games).

HD-DVD has pretty much lost, but their contract with Paramont and Dreamworks I think last for the rest of the year, so if you want The Bee Movie on HD, you still have to get the HD-DVD version. I dont know if Paramont/Dreamworks can choose to get out of the contract early, maybe they can

Really? I was under the impression that it was not only the most reliable blu-ray player on the market, its also the cheapest that supports profile 1.1

There are still cheaper Blu Ray players than the PS3 at this point in time, and despite HDDVD being in a grim way, DVD is still destroying Blu Ray. It's not a particularly popular format when compared with DVD and doesn't bring the truely revolutionary benefits DVD brought to the table over VHS. I'd imagine the PS3 will help Blu Ray sales though, and likewise Blu Ray will help PS3.

Yeah even tho DVD is beating Blu-ray right now. I ask this. Who owns the royalty rights to the whole DVD platform? Sony! :D It's like just paying the other hand. LOL. Sony wins either way. Even MS has to play Sony some royalties just to print thier game discs.

DVD was developed and implemented by a consortium of companies. Sony does not own it.

Ya but for every Video CD drive and DVD drive out there sony and it's partners get 3.5% on it each drive sold (minimum of $3.50). So for every disc tray failure that all the Xbox360's get. Sony get's a cut.

What you don't realize is casuals can't see the difference between a dvd quality and Blu Ray quality. There was a big jump from VHS to DVD which caused people to jump on ship. There was a change in format, a big change in quality and a change on what comes with the movie. So it was more of a transition. However with HD-DVD and Blu Ray, its only a upgrade over DVD. And unless DVD becomes a unsupported format, then people won't jump on Blu Ray just because it won or the PS3 is the "cheapest" but still expensive movie player.

New line is part of Warner...

TC: There are already sub $300 Bluray players, by year end there will be sub $200 1.1 players. Not sure if the Sammy is 1.1, just goes to show the current mess that is the Bluray "standard".

Bluray's biggest flaw is that it wasn't ready to be released. Why is sony always behind the game lately?

Oh and I'm pretty sure sony doesn't exclusively own the sole rights to DVD technology. DVD-Forum?

You do know you can't marry a company right?

Probably not, considering many regular movies come on multiple discs(Movies and special features separate) and TV series come on multiple discs. Seems they are just filling up the space. Sad really, thought the high capacity next gen media was going to reduce disc quantities.

I love how everyone thinks that HD-DVD is dead because Warner and its child companies switched to Blu-ray. HD-DVD still has Paramount, Universal and Dreamworks; 3 very large production companies. Now, I won't lie, Warner going Blu-ray exclusive was a large hit to HD-DVD but it is not dead. We still have to see what Toshiba's response to this will be and what other studios will do now. Once that is all done, we can determine if the format is dead.

HD DVD and Blu Ray each have about 45 studios producing movies for the respective formats. Of course some studios are bigger than others.

http://www.dvdempire.com/Content/Features/hidef_wars.asp

This means little for the PS3 except for maybe a few sold as movie players. The software sales wont improve and neither will the overall quality of games.

Calling an end to the war when less than 500 titles have been released may be a little premature.

What happens if HD-DVD rises from the dead in half a year when the players go to everything must go priceing?

Will the studos suddenly change there mind and start supporting HD-DVD again if the sales go though the roof?

Right now I don't think any thing is really decided, especialy with both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray not living up to expectations. DVD is still king and it looks like it'll be that way for at least 3 to 4 more years.

1. HD-DVD is not officially canned.

2. At CES the 360 will start having the HD-DVD included in the 360. So what ever advantage the Blu-ray included in a PS3 would have would be null.

3.HD-DVD set top boxes are cheaper and mop the floor with set top blu-ray players.

4. No sub $99 players have came out for either format, and when that time comes is when the true winner of the format wars begins.

HD DVD players were sub $99 for a few hours. $98.47 to be exact, from Wal Mart. Thats when I got mine. I dont have a lot of money invested, so I am not too uneasy about Warner's move.

This won't have the same impact DVD had on the PS2 because the jump between DVD and Bluray is tiny in comparison to the jump between VHS and DVD. The major difference between DVD and Bluray is HD resolution, which vary very slightly from SD resolution. However between VHS and DVD there was a giant difference including no more rewinding, special features, smaller media (easier to store) and also the fact that DVD was so clearly dominant. AS it stands now Bluray is winning (and will likely win) but hasn't won yet and for all we know HD-DVD could amke a comeback and many consumers will wait for the format war to end before adopting a new format.

Its paramount, dreamworks, and universal. If Paramount and dreamworks goes back to blu-ray then its pretty much over. But with HD-DVD still having these studios back them still keeps HDDVD in the battle.
