Poll So now that Smash 4 is over, which was the best Smash Bros. game? (76 votes)

Super Smash Bros. (N64) 3%
Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN) 41%
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) 8%
Super Smash Bros. (3DS/Wii U) 49%
No Caption Provided

As of today, support for Super Smash Bros. is officially concluded- some characters, stages, and Trophies are still left to be released, but we know which ones they are, and they're just a few weeks away from release anyway.

So, with that, Smash 4 is in its entirety now a known entity. Which leads me to my next, big question- which Smash Bros. game is the best, in your opinion? And why?

My answer is Smash 4. I agree, Melee is probably deeper and has more technical nuance, but Smash 4 has plenty of depth and nuance of its own, on top of copious amounts of content (seriously, 58 fighters, 84 stages, and over 500 tracks of music?), a multitude of modes, and for my preference, the best mechanics in the franchise.

The fact that Smash 4 also has the best graphics, the best soundtrack, fucking 8 Man Smash, and a portable version (which fits my lifestyle and needs so well, and is such a perfect translation of Smash on the go) puts it even more on the top in my books.

So... how about you? Which Smash is the best Smash? And why?

Yeah, I think I agree. It's far from perfect, but Smash 4 has the best roster of the series (though FAR too many Fire Emblem characters), and is an overall great experience. I just wish they'd replace that silly board game mode with something more... substantial. I also think the Wii U's version of Classic is the worst to date, though on the flipside, the 3DS's classic mode is one of the best versions.

Now to start hyping Smash 5. I hope the NX has a longer life than the Wii U so that Smash 5 can maybe have continuous support for the systems entire life, rather than just one year.

I think 4 is maybe the best today... (although I'd rather play others )

but if you take into account when they were released ... I feel like it's the least impressive... maybe I just dont care about the series the way I used to

Smash on Wii U is the best all around game in the series. It's the only one that was designed with competitive play in mind and it has the rich feature set of Brawl. Melee may still be the most hardcore, but the new game has a better balance overall.

Like I posted the last time you made this thread:

"Melee has an actual single player and tournament mode. It also had the best stages, because Brawl's and 4's stages are trash. So Melee. Its Break the Targets and Platform modes were great as **** too.

Then 4. I like 4 a lot despite there not being a competent single player outside of Events and some crap modes there. It has much better combat than Brawl and no one misses Subspace Emissary. No one.

Brawl is cool because of how modern and accessible it felt compared to the barebones original game and the rushed UI and feature set of Melee. There's genuine good ideas here and I had lots of fun with the game. It just has two better games in the series.

Smash Bros 64 is a basic fighting game from the 90s. Fun for however long you want to play it but not much beyond that."

In addition though I'm hugely disappointed in how 4's DLC turned out. It's a great tribute to everything Nintendo but the DLC is highly unsatisfying.

Smash 4 and is not even a contest, i mean the huge amount of content and updates is just way too good, and the game is not broken nor anything like that, is actually balanced much better than previous games, so yeah, Smash 4.

Smash 4 for sure. It has fast-paced action as well as slow-paced action. I feel it blends them quite well. It does have some balance issues and some character roster nuisances. Smash 4 has so much to do, the only downside is that there is no real story mode or adventure mode. The online was almost spot-on for a lot of the time. There's so many collectibles, music, challenges, and game modes to try and collect/beat. It's a stellar game and my favorite, Melee is great, same with Brawl, but neither of them really meet Smash 4 at least for me.

Melee, any advantage Smash 4 is a benefit of improved tech (production value, online play) or just pure "it has more game content".

Melee. I miss leaving my Gamecube on for 20 hours and heading off to middle school, waiting patiently for Mewtwo to become unlocked. Now i get home from work and have to put my credit card in my Wii U to play Mewtwo or Roy.

Ya, it was super rewarding and hard to unlock everything in SSB and SSBM. I remember how disappointed I was when SSB4 only had like 5 characters to unlock, and all you did I think was keep playing versus matches to get them to show up.

I haven't played a whole lot of the N64 original. And unlike a lot of Smash fanatics, I actually like Brawl a lot. That said, this is a tough one between Melee and Smash 3DS/Wii U, though I think Melee edges.

Either way, not really a big fan of the series. I can see its appeal, and I enjoy the games, but I guess I've never been as much into it as millions of other people clearly are.

Eh, the "more content" argument would mean something to me if most of the content in Brawl of Smash 4 were actually good. A good amount of it wasn't. With the meh story mode in Brawl and the butchered, and massively BS classic mode in Smash 4, the lesser event modes between both, stupid fucking Smash Tour (Smash Run on 3DS was actually kind of cool though), some ridiculous challenges...

My favorite Smash game is still Melee, for having the best combat engine, while also having much better content, even if there was less of it (quality > quantity). Melee also got the most playtime from me and my friends, so there's that too.

Smash 4 was atleast a good improvement over Brawl though.

Don't feel I can make the best call as Melee has crazy nostalgia factor for me.

Smash 4 is great from the little I have gotten to play it and it is the only Smash title I would put up there with Melee.

I'm tempted to say Melee, but I feel like I gotta go with Smash U. I love the roster of characters and how they all play, and 8-player Smash has gotten a strong amount of focus at my Smash Nights.

I spent a ton of time with Melee though. And some of the stuff in Smash U is lackluster, and the stages early on were really shmeh.

Smash 4 but not by much from Melee.

I kinda wish that Smash 4's Break the Targets was similar to Melee's, where the targets were based on the character's moveset.

Maybe Smash 4. I haven't decided yet. I don't like the stages that much. I like 4 better than Brawl, but I think I might like Melee more still because of the stages. I really wish the Wii U version would have some of the stages that are on 3DS..

I'm on the opposite about this. Characters in a fighter should never have to be unlocked. The entire roster should be available at the get go.

Smash 4 is clearly the best, but I do have a special place in my heart for Brawl's story mode, even when the fighting mechanics were weaker.

Melee and 64 are the answers of nostalgic morons.

By that, you're referring to wave-dashing, SHFFLing, and all those difficult-to-execute accidental mechanics that are so pervasive in high-level play unlike any other mechanic in a fighting game where they'd be a mere extra tool to assist if you can make sporadic use of them? From a strict design perspective, I'd say Melee's core is awful for that reason, the progression from competent-level to high-level not being mastery of fundamentals built up over your gameplay experience, but completely destroying them and forcing you to build a different set of fundamentals based around bullshit mechanics. Not even the worst of fighters demand so much on the execution level, nor do their mechanics 'reset' the entire game.

For a parallel, the difference between low-level and high-level players in Mario Kart DS. It's not "Oh, the player knows how to navigate the track well with that kart while dealing with bullshit from players and keeping their cool i.e. good fundamentals", it's "They can snake with that tank that pretty much glides over rough terrain and would still beat you even on smooth terrain and with all the blue shells in the world on their tail because snaking". Is that -really- how you want players to lose? Because they aren't willing to murder their hands to use an unintended mechanic which they'd have absolutely zero fucking hope of winning without? I doubt it.

-

Now, if we could remake Melee without the bullshit that comes with it, we'd have a little different discussion. Would say though that, in my scrub experience, that SSB4 simply does a better job of making character feel like they really were ripped out of the universe they came from. At the end of the day, when Smash is a ridiculously accessible fighting series all about paying tribute to all your faves, isn't that what matters?

All that is needed to refute a definitive statement is one instance to the contrary.

So, I present to you as evidence: myself. No ties to Japan, played Fire Emblem Awakening, and loved it.

Therefore, you're wrong ^_^
