I think its a good time to ask this.

All gen the Wii has gotten tons of hate. A lot of it justified. A lot of it nonsense.

The most common complaints, or at least the most vocal tend to be these.

  • The hardware is too underpowered
  • I hate motion controls
  • The online infrastructure sucks
  • The Wii doesnt get x, x and x multiplat

Now at face value these complaints are 100% legit.

mc-hammer.jpg

But now that the gen has run its course, do you really think you would have wanted HD triplets? Had Nintendo put out a console in the same ballpark as the PS360, same controller, same specs, same online focus and the same games with the only difference being Nintendo exclusives, would that have really been better?

Personally, I think not. It would have been boring.

The lack of "up to date" hardware caused the Wii to have a significantly different line-up. Sure, a Wii only owner (if any exist) misses out on a great deal of relevant multiplats, but on the other hand it got its fair share of 3rd party exclusives some of which were quite interesting since developers weren't being slaves to mass market safety as dev costs were dirt cheap for the platform. A lot of unique titles found a home on the console because of this. And in some cases like Xenoblade, the game was realized in way that would not have been feasible on another console.

Admittedly, motion controls where only utilized well in a small portion of the Wii line-up, but again it was a break from the norm and made for some good fun at times. I wouldn't want it to become the standard by any means, but it was a nice side step nonetheless.

As for the online, many games deserved a better service than what Nintendo offered, nobody can deny this. As far as online playability goes it gets the job done... kind of.., but its a shameful service barely meeting the baseline standard. However, I enjoy that games ship COMPLETE, you don't have shoddy DLC practices and most importantly the library saw a strong focus towards single player and local multiplayer. To me these were MAJOR pluses.

So what do you think SW? Looking back on it now would you have rather had HD triplets, or enjoy the Wii simply for what it was and how it compliments other platforms?

No poll cause I'd rather see some real discussion.

Wii is a decent secondary system, like a PS3 or 360 is to a PC. You are getting a slightly worse system at face value with a Wii, but by not getting one you are getting a worse gaming experience overall, so to some extent it was worth owning.

The Wii was an awesome system, but this gen was really one to own 2 systems: The Wii for killing some time when you have nothing to do, and the PS3 or 360 for your longer, tougher games. None of the systems this gen had the complete library of games I was looking for, so it paid to own a Wii alongside one of the next-gen twins, 360 in my case.

I love the Wii, and it was my favorite system this gen, but it had some problems hardware-wise and it's library was somewhat lacking, though it still had Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. Those games took me a while to beat 100%.

Plus I sunk nearly 2000 hours into Brawl since it released. I don't care what purists say, that game is much better than Melee.

I'd still take the Wii for what it was, as it brings games that not even the HD systems have done. I'd rather have different experiences with each system, as having the same would just plain suck.

I don't think it needed to go toe to toe with the HD twins, but it needed to be stronger to handle those multiplats and potentially get better exclusives. The way it is it will not be remembered fondly.

I know this is a classic and hated argument all sheep use, but if graphics are so high on your list of reasons to hate a system that it overshadows game mechanics, you have a problem.

It rarely got those right either but buddy... phones have better graphics than the Wii, phones. That's nothing to be proud of no matter what your originality tooth tells you.

What do you mean? What game mechanics, waggle? I don't want waggle and that goes to ps360 as well. Or its another gameplay>graphics? Cuz i have both on ps360/pc...and with much MUCH better gameplay.

Better graphics can help improve games tho, I would say the Wii would have been better off (In a gaming view not a business one) if it was capable of producing better games. Mario Galaxy would have still been a great game if the wii was HD Wiimote didn't improve games and arguably it didn't improve the experience of playing the game, it just offered a *different* way to play games. Using the *Its Nintendo we don't need HD graphics* is a poor excuse at least in my eyes, Nintendo won't suddenly choose graphics over Game Machanics that is not how they work, better hardware can help improve their games, I wouldn't say its *NEEDED* But I look at Zelda on the Wii and go wow..imagine if that was made for something like the Xbox360 or PS3, lighting would be better, bigger scale, shadow effects, you get the idea.

it doesn't even need better shadows, scale. Look how much better it looks with only AA and resolution upped. Wii's version looks completely fugly in comparison.

Between those choices I'd definitely stick with the Wii for what it was. Things already seem a bit redundant with PC, PS3 and 360 sharing so many games along with PS3 and 360 being such similar platforms.

I really enjoyed the Wii a lot, but some 720p and a touch of AA would have gone a long way towards those visuals. It didn't make the games any less fun though.

The Wii was a great idea in theory, the motion controls looked promising and the idea of not just having three clone consoles sounded decent. In reality the motion controls for the most part were terribly utilised. Even decent games like donkey kong had needless waggle parts that distracted rather than improved/immersed. The lack of support from third parties added to that and you had a pretty poor system. Outside of a few third party games and Nintendo games which only really mario galaxy and skyward sword (and the mini/party games) made full use of the motion controls meant it was disappointing.

The Wii is for kids, or for gamers who want a secondary system for some admittedly good games. But anything really decent on the console was far and few between.

Me? My preference goes like this. PC > PS3 > Wii > 360. I dont deny the shortcomings of the Wii at all.

I was just trying to have a different type of discussion, but only two or three people read the thread.

The fact that the Wii was udnerpowered kind of made it so that devs had to be mroe creative when making games; they couldn't jsut rely solely on graphical flare to impress people. Games like Super Smash Brothers Brawl, the Galaxy games, Xenoblade, No More Heroes games and Silent Hill Shattered Memories are great examples of a game overcoming the limitations of a system to deliver awesome games.

I have zero interest in Nintendo or their games however I'm glad they exist.

I'm also glad that Sony exists to keep MS on a leash.

yeah in the real world the Wii also has more respect then the 360, ps3, and the PC put to gether because of casuals. The real world is full of stereo types that gamers are nerds with big glasses and pocket protectors. Don't put that sh!t here everyone knows the real world doesn't count in SW. Nintendo consoles are always my favorite but I dont think I can own just a Ninty console.

I will always need a Playstation or XBox to back it up.

That being said... I dont think I could have only one console in general.

Nintendo is awesome.

The WiiU will be awesome.

I want more ZELDA!!!

If the Wii was HD like the PS3 and 360, then isuret would have been a bit better, with better looking/more detailed games and may have gotten some more third party developers to make games for the Wii. That being said the Wii still had some great first party and third party exclusives, and many games on the Wii still managed too look great, they just looked good due to aesthetics instead of graphics, which I fine by me as I find aesthetics preferable to graphics anyways. I also liked the Virtaul Console since it allowed me to play classic games I missed out on before.

The Wii was fine as it was IMO and I played it as much as my 360.

Thats a different way of looking at it. I guess I would take the Wii as is when you put it that way.

But the real question is... what the hell is MC Hammer doing in the op? :|

The Wii for me was a breath of fresh air in this HD dominated generation. It offered a chance to play something different this gen instead of just three identical HD consoles. If the Wii had not been released I doubt I would of been that involved with this generation as I have been, it offered a nice change of pace for when HD consoles just became boring to play.

The same could be said about any system. So what is your point?

Oh btw, thanks to those of you that did actually read and respond. I guess this thread could have used a poll to simplify things. :P

The reason why the wii not having access to multiplats is significant is because if it had access to multiplats maybe it wouldn't have a poor selection of games. Motion controls, dual screens, touch screens, and 3D have nothing to do with whether or not games are "boring." If the wii has proved anything, new control methods plus general stagnation equals general stagnation with sloppy controls.
