I think its a good time to ask this.
All gen the Wii has gotten tons of hate. A lot of it justified. A lot of it nonsense.
The most common complaints, or at least the most vocal tend to be these.
- The hardware is too underpowered
- I hate motion controls
- The online infrastructure sucks
- The Wii doesnt get x, x and x multiplat
Now at face value these complaints are 100% legit.
But now that the gen has run its course, do you really think you would have wanted HD triplets? Had Nintendo put out a console in the same ballpark as the PS360, same controller, same specs, same online focus and the same games with the only difference being Nintendo exclusives, would that have really been better?
Personally, I think not. It would have been boring.
The lack of "up to date" hardware caused the Wii to have a significantly different line-up. Sure, a Wii only owner (if any exist) misses out on a great deal of relevant multiplats, but on the other hand it got its fair share of 3rd party exclusives some of which were quite interesting since developers weren't being slaves to mass market safety as dev costs were dirt cheap for the platform. A lot of unique titles found a home on the console because of this. And in some cases like Xenoblade, the game was realized in way that would not have been feasible on another console.
Admittedly, motion controls where only utilized well in a small portion of the Wii line-up, but again it was a break from the norm and made for some good fun at times. I wouldn't want it to become the standard by any means, but it was a nice side step nonetheless.
As for the online, many games deserved a better service than what Nintendo offered, nobody can deny this. As far as online playability goes it gets the job done... kind of.., but its a shameful service barely meeting the baseline standard. However, I enjoy that games ship COMPLETE, you don't have shoddy DLC practices and most importantly the library saw a strong focus towards single player and local multiplayer. To me these were MAJOR pluses.
So what do you think SW? Looking back on it now would you have rather had HD triplets, or enjoy the Wii simply for what it was and how it compliments other platforms?
No poll cause I'd rather see some real discussion.
