Nintendo's problem has never been in relation with its first-pary support. It has always been top-notch. The problem is that it lacks the third party support to fill the gaps between the first party games.IronBass
Well historically this was done by Rareware, which is why the N64 still managed to have a competent library after losing practically all of it's Japanese support - probably due to bad relations it built with 3rd party companies.
The gamecube was a very promising system, and managed to showcase a number of quality Resident Evil titles, but not enough support came from other areas.
It seems that developers are excited about developing games for the HD consoles and are perhaps bewildered by applying wii motion technology to their games. For example, Umbrella Chronicles was originally supposed to be a game with different scenarios spanning throughout the series with motion applied to things like kicking doors down. But after a certain point it became a railshooter, and the level design quality in the game really went down, reusing Outbreak levels even. Luckily, they seem to be making a bigger effort with Darkside Chronicles, but its sad to see Capcom making railshooters for the system as opposed to a full fledged RE2 remake.
