Microsoft should have announced a $100 price drop instead of introducing the elite system. Especially with the 20 gig being canned.

That was a long time ago...I remember the PSX and PS2 @ $299, Saturn was $399,
SNES was $199 in 1991 I think...When I was six. Thats a damn long time ago

thats so true, i am sticking with ms this generation, im an xbox fan but that elite was a really dumb idea, maybe if they would have included an hd drive, but they didnt, the LEAST they can do is let the hardcore people buy it first at that price and then maybe drop the elite down to replace the premium, and make the premium cost $300
other than that, im very impressed with ms's level of service and games committment, even then im not forced to buy an elite, i have my premium, and if i wanted i could get a core, but sony just now forcing everybody to buy their $599 version

I think a lot of people agree which is why there was (is) so much confusion surrounding the Elite 360. They don't need to spread further confusion by having 3 models on the market its just getting insane. What next the Xbox 360 Platinum?
EDIT I agree about the price drop but a full $100 probably asking too much even a $50 would make sense.

All Nintendo consoles except for the Wii were $199.True which is another way Nintendo has taken advantage of its competitor's prices. They were able to tack on $50 to a system that should only be $200 at the most and still be the cheapest new system on the market.

And you think that's expensive? Maybe you don't know that MS and Sony are losing money on every console they sell ;)
Of course, the earnings come with the licenses, accesories, etc.

One thing drove the price of the Wii up to $250: the inclusion of the Wiimote + nunchuck. They tacked on $50 and added WiiSports as a way of getting profit, because without that extra $50 the Wii would probably have only broken even, and Nintendo is a company that NEEDS to make a profit on every unit sold.posts of this subject are a joke.
One, Sony stopped the 20GB console because no one was buying it.
Two, my first point proves that $600 isn;t too much.

Yeah, that's what the latest analysis says. Although that's just hardware; I don't think it actually counts all the marketing, online maintenance, etc.or you could get a 360 L337 for 100 bux less and have 500 dollars less worth the console for games that perform worse:|

I like the Elite.
yeah and the 360 elite now is $540 plus taxes..elementz28
yeah that does kinda suck, but my whole thing is that sony is now forcing you to buy their most expensive model, where as i can still go out and get a core or premium 360 if i want to, even the elite is still cheaper than the ps3
I love Kotaku's take on this. The PS3 slims down to one SKU, while the 360 bloats up to three.mjarantilla
Sony gives gamers ONE option - $599. Microsoft gives gamers THREE options - $299, $399, $479. How is this bad again?
I guess we'll finally see the end of cows saying that the PS3 only costs $499.

Or better yet, price drop with the launch of the elite... but they aren't going to announcet that until the 65nm processors are in full scale production... No wonder why they want to move last chipset's stock first.

360 Elite($480) + Xbox Live($50) + wireless adapter($99) + HD-DVD add-on($200) = $830 *not including tax
PS3 60GB($600) + PSN($0) + WiFi($0) + Blu-Ray($0) + component cables($20) = $620 *not including tax
If you want to get everything out of your 360, then you'll find yourself spending well over the price of a PS3, so go get yourself a Wii and don't complian about prices.

I think the wireless is worthwhile, but adding in the cost of the HD-DVD is silly (as is the cost of Live since there is a lot on there for free). It's funny, I never use my Blu ray player for movies but always find myself on the internet wirelessly.

I like how you forgot about how 360 has optional SKUs. So say the $299 Core version. That would only equal to $50 bucks more than the PS3 by your math. Oh wait, and what about your precious HDMI cable with costs oh I don't know about $70 bucks. Ok so now with all that the prices even, 360 still has LIVE. So have fun playing Virtua Tennis 3 on PSN...oh wait.

don't forget to buy a hd tv to actually play those awsome games on...hamarklarmer
But then you'll also need an HD cable, which amazingly, isn't even included in that $650 price. LOL
