There have been more threads on this than people lining up for a PS3 in the whole of Australia.

I live in Australia and it's to be expected. $1000 and they cut backwards compatibility. The games cost $120 and many of them you can get on 360 for half that price. The 360 premium is selling for $700 with Gears of War, PDZ and PGR3 or $600 with DOA 4 or PGR3. You can buy games from the 360's classics selection for $50 and Wii is still a hot item that is less expensive then the competition at $400 with Wii sports. Games can be found on Wii for $100 at most and in many cases $80.

I got junk mail where they cost $120. Haven't been to any shops recently though.

$1 is 80 US cents. Games are just expensive and even more so with Sony products. The PS3 costs $800 USD and the games are $80 to $96. While I have the converter out. The 360 is $480 USD with DOA 4 or PGR3 and the Wii is $322 US. Not that those conversion matter all that much. All that matters is $1000 is way too much for most people to pay for a console and that's why sales are likely to be slow for the PS3 here.

If you convert the numbers $599US = $743.45AUS not $999AUS We pay through our noses becauyse of rediclious taxes, shipping costs, reatailer markups ect.

Not necessarily devalued. Just... different. Did you know that a mexican peso is worth about 10 japanese yen? That does not mean the Yen is heavily devaluated... just measures differently. Them japanese like their zeros or something :P

80 US cents to a dollar isn't massively devalued. Sony Australia said the currency difference was half of it, but they also said our lower population was part of it too (but that doesn't explain Europe I suppose).
