While it's true, local isn't what it was...some games still got it going on, you just have to look.
Rayman Origins, LBP, New Super Mario, Fighting games come to mind, some shooters like GeoW, Resistance, Halo, and KZ2/3...but yeah, it's not like the old days, that's true.
Yup, sucks. My best gaming memories tend to be playing co-op with my brother or friends. Online gaming, while fun, fails to capture the intensity of being in the same room with buddies.
But like SolidTy said, most developers are moving away from local co-op. Which is especially wierd - it's was one of the previously defining characteristics of console gaming. I haven't coded a local co-operative game, but from my experience in making some basic online games for a class, it can't be that much more difficult then working on proper netcode.
What's really worrying the example of SSX. The developer says they could release co-op later as DLC. I half-expect that to become a trend - games start removing co-op (And maybe other nifty features) only to charge for them down the line.

No but it's kindof dumb to have to connect online if you want your friends over at your place just to play against each other or do co-op. All games should have some sort of LAN option.
I'm glad Uncharted 3 and Twisted Metal actually put LAN in this time around. And a lot of PC games still do support it.

Not at the sacrifice of actual friends who have made the effort to come to your house. Only sports games think this is a good feature now.True.
Online multiplayer is boring unless you're playing with buddies.
Local multiplayer is best multiplayer.
Local multiplayer is great and its the reason I enjoy games like Resident Evil 5, Halo and Call of Duty for letting me game with buddies on the same screen. Unfortunately, it doesn't make the most business sense.
A game without local multiplayer is a game with less work put into making local multiplayer, and one where every friend who wants to play with you needs their own $60 copy of the game, which essentially means for 4 player fun EA would make $240 for 4 players wanting to play together instead of just $60 for one game everyone plays on.
Totally agree, specially with all these huge TVs that are widescreen, it's almost and old school 21" TV for every player in a 4 player game!
I just wish some games let you choose to split vertically, because horizontally on a widescreen TV just feels weird (GeoW).

It's sh*t compared to local.
Calling up 10-15 friends once a weekend to play countless games at yo home, smoking, drinking, having a good time, is my idea of a gaming bliss. It's what i do at least once a weekend. It's sad that most do not have the knowledge to experience that gaming heaven.
Playing online is a sh*itty experience compared to that.

this. plus it requires more copies of the game.Wow, your just like me. I played each of those games/series a lot because ofe the coop.Local multiplayer is great and its the reason I enjoy games like Resident Evil 5, Halo and Call of Duty for letting me game with buddies on the same screen. This. I couldn't have said it better.Ya it is annoying, but there still are some games that do it. I recommend checking out Twisted Metal, it has both split screen and online split screen, so you and your buddies can play online together on the same TV! It's a really fun fast paced game and has great MP, definately recommend it. Only downside is that it has a stupid online pass crap! So get it new.
If you don't have a PS3 then Halo 4 will probably have split screen. Also the COD games have them as well. For me personally I'm hoping that RE Operation Racoon City has it.
Well some games have it.... but the games you wish that had it the most don't. :|
I really wish Saints Row had Local Multiplayer :? It would have been a blast!
This is why games like Rockband are games that last a life time and don't get old so it's worth the expensive full set price.

This. I couldn't have said it better. And THIS is why I think the original xbox is better than ps2. The idea of getting X tvs in a room, along with X number of consoles, JUST to play Halo:CE was unheard of for consoles. ...then there's halo2 which raised it to a whole new level.

Well, that's incorrect, but I can understand your perspective.
Actually it was popularized well before Halo existed...but I do remember that Halo experiences with my buds too (after all, I own two Xbox's and have talked about LAN many times in SW). I took part in many experiences where we got X Tv's in a room along with X number of consoles....but I guess it depends on your age and perspective, as younger gamers wouldn't remember something they weren't old enough to remember or afford.
It was heard of for consoles back in the Saturn/N64/Playstation generation well before the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube even came out or existed. It was called the Playstation Link Cable. While it's true, I did LAN parties for Xbox, I also did them for PS2, Gamecube, and even older Playstation.
Two different Playstation Command and Conquer games were popular games for linking up on Playstation (I also played other games like PS's Armored Core games this way with friends, Doom, Duke Nukem, both Bushido Blades, Wipeout, Plenty of racing games and more), which was unheard of for consoles. The Link Cable was a neat idea, and I for one was glad to do it again when the PS2, Xbox, and GC came out. Obviously, I did this again with friends when the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube came out. C&C were my fondest memories for linking up consoles early on. I'm glad to have seen that carry on with the i.link and LAN on PS2, Xbox and Gamecube LAN as well. GT3, Tony Hawk, Armored Core, and Time Crisis games were popular PS2 ilink games, just fyi.
I'm not arguing that Halo wasn't probably the most popular console link up experience for westerners, only that it was heard of and done by many far before Xbox-PS2-GC came to the game scene.
In fact, I did link up GC's for Mario Kart, which was my only GC link up experience with multiple Gamecubes (I believe only two games were supported and Mario Kart was the better between the two), although I also connect GBA's to the Cube but that was sort of different. :P
Agreed. There still are good games with local multiplayer, but most games focus on having an online mode before worrying about local, if at all.
I remember hooking up my GBA with my friend's playing Mario and others together. Those were the days.
split screen is dead on consoles. Welcome to the future.DragonfireXZ95
I wouldn't call split-screen 'dead' per say. Just out-classed by online.

DragonfireXZ95
You mean welcome to the alone world of pc gaming? This is one reason Ive never gotten into to much of pc gaming. Its not centered around family/friends playing together. Its about hooking up online and playing, never getting the joys of socializing and enjoying your time together. Im not trying to start a war here. Thats just my opinion on the matter. I have spent THOUSANDS of hours playing games with friends and family together and will treasure those sleepless nights until I die..
Good thing I still have all my old consoles, games ect..

This is true and the reason why I am disapointed in the lineup of local 4 player games on the PS3.
This seems to be EA's latest way of pissing people off. Just like the implementation of online passes discourages buying used, the exclusion of local multiplayer pressures players to each buy their own copy instead of sharing one. Hopefully other publishers won't be following suit.
Solution: do better research and buy more split screen games. Racing games, fighting games, sports games, Rock Band, KZ3, Call of Duty, Rainbow 6, Uncharted 3, Twisted Metal, Resistance 3, RE5, Portal 2, Borderlands, etc. Street Fighter vs Tekken has 4 player tag as well as on the screen at the same time action. But let's just ignore that so we can complain some more.chaotzu
Not all racing and sports games have split-screen. :P e.g Burnout Paradise, NFS Hot Pursuit 2010, SSX 2012 etc.
