sorry for my bad english...

Means that you are either:
a.) passionate gamer who is enthusiastic about games
b.) skilled in games you play (like playing fighters or shooters or whatever on a competitive level)
That's my perspective atleast.
No such thing. Gaming is gaming. Nothing more. The term hardcore is only brought up by Hermits who think they are special because they chose to build a PC. Something any of us could do if we wanted to. So they basically brag for nothing.
OR...........
It is a term thrown around to degrade folks who like Facebook games, Wii games, or Kinect games.
You are simply not allowed to be happy playing games you enjoy in SystemWars without an dickhead comparing it to a graphics card or making fun of you for having kids and friends who come over to play Wii and Kinect.
Hardcore gamers prefer to take significant time and practice on games, and tend to play more involved games that require larger amounts of time to complete or master. Hardcore gamers may take part in video game culture. Competition is another defining characteristic of hardcore gamers, who often compete in organized tournaments, leagues, or ranked play integrated into the game proper. There are many subtypes of hardcore gamers based on the style of game, gameplay preference, hardware platform, and other preferences.
Core vs Causal dichotomy exists to distinguish games as we (gamers) used to know them for over 30 years from "games" like Angry Birds etc. that popped up recently thanks to Wii and iPhone.
Its clear that those two are completely different categories.

I think its safe to say that console gaming is casual, of course some PC gaming is casual also, like facebook games etc.
Casual gamers are those who like to pop in and play a simple game that doesn't require extreme effort or intense thought to play.
Hardcore gamers are those who like to be challenged, play games throughly, get immersed in the world and often take there lust for challenge to the online services available.
That's my way of viewing it.
Closest thing to "hardcore" gaming is dudes who play competitively for money like pro StarCraft players and what not.
To answer the poll question: You are a core gamer if you play core games sometimes.
Causal gamers are gamers that will never play Dark Souls or Deus Ex. Causal gamers play angry birds to kill some time or Wii sports when they are drunk on party, or maybe Call of Duty every once in a while, but they never play core games. If you play core games sometimes, you are a core gamer.
Got it?
Hardcore Gamer - One who spends more time on forums trying to validate his console/games of choice rather than playing and enjoying them.
When people ask of my hobbies, I say I game, or am a gamer. When they say "oh like do you play Call of Duty/Angry Birds?", I go like "Nooo dude, I'm a hardcore gamer, I just clocked 80+ hours on Trinity Souls".
Those guys are hardcore gamers. Nowadays when kids label themselves "Hardcore" It's simply a title they give themselves to justify their lack of social interaction.

Yes. Demon Souls is casual. Your sig just screams idiot so I will not bother explaining why you are wrong.A hardcore gamer is someone that is a fan of at least one franchise and or genre and plays games when they have some free time.
i disagree. That's the definition of a casual gamer. Hardcore gaming is more so how you play a game. Are you just playing it for fun or playing it to master it. If you chose the latter then you're a hardcore gamer. Getting 3 stars for every level on Angry Birds is a hardcore task, and the person trying to do that task is hardcore.A hardcore gamer is someone that is a fan of at least one franchise and or genre and plays games when they have some free time.

this. its a stupid term with no meaning for nerds to make themselves feel superiorNo such thing. Gaming is gaming. Nothing more. It means you're very dedicate/passionate to your hobby.
This doesn't just extend to gaming, it extends to all hobbies.
And this is the worst kind of question to ask in SW, expect tons of "lololol losers/no lifers/other meaningless bullsh!t" for no reason whatsoever.
edit: Oh snap, already happened!
Every option on that poll is lame. Hardcore gamer is a term used too much and taken out of context. I think calling someone a Gamer would suffice. If you keep up with game news, think about games on a regular basis, play games on a regular basis, and so on, you are a gamer. If you just play a few titles now and then and don't keep up with the industry you are just a casual game player.
No idea what it means but I know it when I see it.
Like if someone spent hundreds of hours playing something you never heard of?
That's not the definition of hardcore gaming but it is the soul and essence of what we mean by hardcore.
When a game gets too popular, I don't think it's hardcore anymore.
It's like GWAR vs Brittney Spears
Anybody can get into Brittney and nod their head to "oops I did it again."
But it takes a special kind of person to get into GWAR.
Apply that to gaming and you have "hardcore gamer."
Hardcore gaming is someone who get's paid to play games. That's how I see it anyway.
I laugh at people on XBL who set their gamerzones to "Pro", it hilarious for 2 reasons; First off it doesn't do anything, the gamerzones are completely pointless and have zero affect, so it's just a joke. And secondly your not fooling anybody, "I'm pro" lol, no your not, stop being stupid.
Although seeing this poll, how does someone play 9 hours a day? That doesn't sound very healthy, hell how would someone pay the bills?
then there's the reverse, people who play RPG's and act like they are superior because they don't like shooters :PI haven o idea. A bunch of kids apparently think because they play Battlefield or Call of Duty or Uncharted or Gears of War and that they hate a certain type of gaming that isn't quite like that that they're somehow hardcore.
NeonNinja
"Hardcore Gaming" is a term invented so gaming fans can segregate and exclude other gamers who are fans of something they are not.
A buzzword created by video game companies to make you feel better about being a nerd who spends unhealthy amounts of time and money on electronic toys.
Several years ago I may have described myself as a hardcore gamer. At that time I was in a clan playing an fps game competitively in both on line and LAN tournaments. We were pretty good (no where near the best) but we practiced and trained, ran assault and defence routes until we could literally run them blindfold. We knew the timings of every aspect of the game from respawns to weapon reload times and even down to how long it took to empty the magazine on each weapon. If we were in front of the computer we were either playing a match or practicing for the next match and for laughs we'd go rape a public server or 2 for a few hours.
Now though, I'm just a bloke that enjoys playing games :D
