It took me a time, but I finally decided to pick this game.

Not to hours latter I had finished it it. It was pretty, the music was very good and was a very plesant playthrough. But it was not even close from being the masterpiece some people make it out to be. Hell, it won a lot of GoTY awards, I think even here on GS. What the frak is going on?

What is that make the game so special?

I picked it up the other day too. Played it for 15 minutes, got bored and played something else.

It' a game that values storytelling over gameplay, that is the sort of game that critics love and give all of the GOTY awards to.

Yep look at Gone Home. Journey was great, but it was pretty much a one and a done.

Mostly the artstyle and the fact that it's a refreshing change of pace from a market that's saturated with FPS and action oriented games.  Although it's not my cup of tea, I can definatly see why so many people like it.

I played Gone Home a few evenings back.  I didn't even pay for it and still felt ripped off.  The only redeeming quality is that it nailed the mid 90's home.

It's a pretentious exclusive, released at the time when pretentious games are held in high regard.

journey is a metaphorical open ended interactive art. people who can connect to the game and reflect it with their own personal interpretation and life struggles are rewarded with some kind of spiritual satisfaction. some sort of inspiration that transcend the materialistic property of the medium. in short its not for everyone.

I just found myself being taken away by the visuals and soundtrack. I don't know. I can't explain without sounding like a prick. I love replaying it. Although I can definitely understand people not digging it.

I don't even think its about that though.  For what it is, the game is cool.  Great art, great music and really just something different.  However, the praise it gets seems to be way over-board.  I'm glad I played it early on so I didn't see all the ridiculous hype before-hand.  When you have all these people screaming Goty, best game ever, etc... it sets you up for a huge disappointment.

Also, nobody is ever forced to play a game.  People criticize games they play all the time, Journey is not immune to this just because its artsy.

People would hype what they want to hype, we have seen this happen over and over so nothing new there, judging a game based on hype generated is nothing but nitpickin, just like the same people who were nitpickin calling TLOU a poor game, even though TLOU had more gameplay than Dead Space 3 and Tomb Raider factually. Everyone seem to be a critic now and their shinny high opinion horse is starting to cloud their brains from actually enjoin interactive entertainment, sometimes its almost as if some people just rush through a game so they can rush to the forum and ''claim ownage'' or stuff of that sort. I am not a fan of Skyrim, but that does not make me not appreciate the efforts put into it, same goes for the new Splinter Cell, same for the upcoming GTAV which i am not buying but i can appreciate it from a distance, you wont see me go around saying its the worst game ever, its highly disrespectful of the hundreds of people who put so much effort into crafting something purposeful. I mean we both can tell the difference between a critic and outright rubbish talk

RageQuitter69

It values visual storytelling, atmosphere, level design and gameplay all at once.

Well just like any other form of entertainment video game tastes are entirely subjective and vary from person to person, TC is clearly one of those guys who don't like Journey (how can you not like Journey :|).

The game starts off incredibly boring. The game didn't actually grab my attention untill I found a co-op buddy in my game. Played the entire game with that random player, one of the best game experiences I had this year.

I think the game should only be played through once. The Journey you first experienced is the one you should remember the most.

i think Journey is best played when you have some sort of terminal illness and is about to die or something, alone around 4 to 6pm during the golden hour.

Have you tried playing it on drugs? If not, gone back once you have.
