There seems to be alot of people proclaiming that "This game looks better than that game." But what are they basing it on?

Would you say that a game has great graphics because of the textures? The lighting? The animation?

So I'll try to start something here. What do YOU, not the general public, think makes a game have "great" graphics? Post an example of your choice if you wish.

- Animation (To me, Uncharted...just so fluid)

- Texture (Easily Gears 2, though I didn't notice much of a leap from the first one)

- Lighting (Killzone 2 by a mile)

- Anti Aliasing (Dont know much games that do this really well, maybe cuz I don't own a PC)

-Frame Rate (Hmm...COD4 had a great frame rate =P )

- Character Model (Tied between Gears 2 and Killzone 2 for me)

- Artstyle (Okami)

- Other (Specify what you mean by other)

If this kind of thread had been done before then I'm sorry cuz I dont post here often and I probably have never seen it.

Great Graphics = Technically Impressive. Mad World looks good because of its artstyle but it's not a technical feat.

All those criteria you mentioned above count towards great graphics, with artstyle being not as important as the rest.

For me its mainly colour. Killzone 2 and Gears of War (1) really do nothing for me graphically becuase all they are are different shades of grey. But, Crysis on the other hand is full of vibrant colours and that is what I consider good graphics. Gears of War 2 is on the boarder line because it brought a little more colour than the first.

A game that is graphically balanced is the best.

By that I mean that I hate it when a game has one thing really awesome but the other graphical features are lacking.

Resistance is pretty balanced.

HL2 is also.

high-res textures, high resolution, AA. I want "clear" graphics without excessive amounts of blur and lightning. I hate games where you get blinded if you play without sunglasses. They should also have some color, really tired of the gray and brown.

Smooth animations, sharp textures, smooth frame-rate, lack of screen tearing, detailed character models, broad color palette (within the context of the game), detailed explosions.

I like the look of Halo better than Gears because there is a nice range of colours. Don't get me wrong, I find the graphics for Gears to be amazing, but the liveliness of Halo makes it more visually appealing.

Take a look at this screenshot I took a few hours ago. See how the colours make it look so nice. Now imagine if that were in the greys of Gears and Killzone, it just wouldn't be appealing at all.

- Artstyle - Animation - Scale - Post-Processing Effects - Textures & Polygon Count Artstyle and Texture / Polygon Count find themselves to be at opposite spectrums of what makes games great-looking, but both contribute towards graphical eye-candy, the way I see it.

From a technical stand point, and I hate to bring this up but games like Crysis achieve the highest results in most of those categories with particular note, lighting, textures, occlusion mapping etc

I personally like to see 2 things. Good amounts of AA and a native 1080p resolution. It just makes everything so crisp and clear!

Technically impressive = impressive to me.

Dynamic lighting, light sources, textures, gun models, character models, level design..etc etc. I don't really care about artstyle, unless the game has the things I just mentioned, like Killzone 2's artstyle is very recognizable. Everything is so Helghast, bookcases, ceilings, buildings...etc. I'm never impressed if a game looks like a comic or something. I.E Street Fighter 4.
