So what were your problems with SMGOTY?

Like many others, I have picked SMG as game of the year...that's not to say it didn't have it's faults. What could the game have done better?

Persoanlly...

- The 1-up system is silly. Just give us infinite lives. Or make 1-ups mean something.

- The fire flower and ice flower left a lot to be desired. Why do they last a limited time? Why do we have to listen to that God awful music? Why do fireballs NOT use the pointer? We finally have a proper aiming mechanic in a 3d mario game and we can't use it to aim?! Both of those items should last unitl you get hit...and they shouldn't replace the stages awesome music with some annoying repetitive tune.

-The red star could had been a whole lot more. What's the point of making a great flying power up if we can only use it in the hub?

-The bosses were weak. Bowser was cool, but the rest were just easy push overs where you had to sling their attacks back at them. Nintneod could had been a bit more inventive here.

- Some really cool galaxys only have one star. I want MORE matter splatter galaxy!

i agree with you on the coolest stages only haveing one star.i found myself forcing myself to continue just because i wanted to play the next question mark box to see what cool innovative galaxy it would turn out to be.question mark galaxies and hungry luma galaxies are the only reason i keep playing

I couldn't agree more with the 1ups problem. They seemed more meaningful back in SMB1, 3 and world(though i was a kid, and may not have been as skilled :)). It almost seems like they are just keeping them because its a staple of the series, because they sure were handed out if you chose to seek it(mailtoad ftw?)

On the flowers i disagree with you. The music was intense, as it should be, and the time limit balanced them out perfectly. I actually like swinging to remote to fling a fireball, it was neat though i do undertstand IR would have provided more accuracy(but then it would replace the star bits!! which may have been a whole other problem). I've always felt powerups work drastically differently in a 3D game then in a 2D one. Lasting fireflower makes sense in the 2D, but i'm not so sure it would be a great idea, in comparison, in the 3D mario's.

The red star certainly felt more like an extra fun little hidden thing, then a useful additional powerup. I suppose it's too bad, but then again, was any galaxy really set up to use it properly? I think they hsould have at least added it in to galaxies we've already visited, for an extra incentive to return to them to play around. Or, designed a few galaxies around the concept.

I loved the bosses! I thought they were epic! Certainly not terribly hard, in fact quite basic for the most part.. but it still felt fun as hell. I loved the battle with the big fish(i've forgotten its name, not that it's a complicated one!)

But i agree with more stars! Some galaxies were incredible, but only gave a star or two! At the same time, which is more important: Fewer galaxies with more stars or more galaxies with fewer stars?

MY hope is that they provide downloadable content for this game. New galaxies, more star challenges for existing galaxies, etc. Wouldn't that be brilliant?

All of the OP's problems and the purple coins. Nintendo, you should have just added more Galaxies instead. Why waste our time doing this?

Spring Mario could have been much better.

The Manta Ray races and rolling around on the ball was a pain to do as well.

agreed about everything except a couple of things

1. If the fire/ice flower didn't have a time limit then it would be too easy.

2. Bouldergeist on his dare devil run was pretty tough.

Drat, I've been outed!

As for purple coins, I actually liked them. At least not the ones with the time limit. The timed ones were too stressful, but the others were great. You got to explore every nook and cranny of a level. It made for a nice relaxing scavenger hunt.

Now let's hope SMGOTY catches on. 8)

My main problems were the swimming controls and the fact that the camera gets a bit weird every once and a while.

Yeah, those two things were my biggest problems andsome of the comet stages were annoying. Other than that I loved the game and I think it deserved GOTY.

I really don't know. I just didn't find it all that great. I mean, it was a really good game, but I just didn't like it as much as everybody else seems to. After I got to the "first ending", everything just got so dull since the only thing left to do was beat what few levels I hadn't already done before facing Bowser the for the first ending of the game. After that the only thing left was to repeatedly beat galaxies and levels I had already done before with the comets in orbit, doing tasks like those obnoxious purple coin collecting missions. I just never had the desire to keep doing that enough times to get to the "real ending".

I actually found SMG's bosses to be more challenging than any other Mario game, by far. This is the first Mario game where some of the bosses actually took me lots of tries to beat (especially on DareDevil mode). The other Mario games (including the 2D ones) have much easier bosses.

I think it didn't deserve GOTY because....

-It poorly used the Wii's motion capabilities. As in very unimaginatively

-the lives system is archaic

-it's another star collecting quest

-it's ridiculously linear

-it's way too easy(Is it that hard to put in a hard difficulty Nintendo?)

-It's really short

-the co-op is lame

even though Bioshock is just a broken and trimmed version of System Shock 2, it deserved GOTY. Especially if you are ignoring games that have a heavy focus on multiplayer...

The only problem I find in SMG is that there are times where the camera is in a angle and it can't be move which is a little annoying to me.

-It poorly used the Wii's motion capabilities. As in very unimaginatively (I don't think it should have to as long as it plays well. There are tons of great DS games that don't use the touch screen or the second screen. There are many playsation anf xbox games that get by using only one analog stick.)

-the lives system is archaic (agreed, but I don't think that's something that really holds it back from GOTY, just from perfection.)

-it's another star collecting quest (Yeah, but I like collecting stars :) )

-it's ridiculously linear (except you can tackle the stages in the order you want.)

-it's way too easy (It is. But I was glad to see that while some stars were really easy, other were insanly hard. It lets casuals just do the easy ones to get an ending, and lets vets challange thenselves for the hard ones.)

-It's really short (If you only want 60 stars)

-the co-op is lame (actually, I haven't tried it out yet.)

Depends who you do it with. If you're doing it with your gaming buddies, then yeah, it's lame and worthless. But it's a great way to get a non-gamer involved in the fun. Have family/friend/significant other without gaming instincts? Give them the second controller, tell them what they're supposed to do, and get ready for plenty of fun together. That is where the co-op isn't just not lame, it's brilliant.

Hm, my only complaint would be the relative ease of the game. Sure, there were some really tough stars to get (I HATE Manta rays and giant glass balls now), but honestly, with 20+ 1up mushrooms collected just by find them in the hub and getting star bits, you might as well have had infinite lives. Also, while the boss fights were epic and very fun, they were also pretty easy.

But other than that, SMGOTY was pretty much near-perfection in my opinion.
