The first one released outside Japan called simply Fire Emblem (it's the 7th entry in the series, Fire Emblem 7: Rekka no Ken/Blazing Sword) on the GBA is the best place to start with the Fire Emblem series. It was designed for newcomers, with an extensive tutorial to cover you about the general mechanics of the series. It's also a fantastic game with great sprite work, a memorable cast of characters and a good plot to get invested in.
After you've completed Fire Emblem 7, go with Path of Radiance (Gamecube) & Radiant Dawn. Radiant Dawn is the best in the series, by far, but the story of it is a direct continuation from Path of Radiance, so you must complete that one before jumping into Radiant Dawn to appreciate the characters and the plot. I jumped straight into Radiant Dawn and i loved every second of it, but only after completing Path of Radiance as well did i realize what a fucking amazing duology this is. They should be viewed as one game and played as such.
They're not only the best in the series, but they're also one of the best video games ever made.
That should get you started. After that, just flip a coin and make a choice. The rest of them (localized games) are good games (except for the DS remake called "Shadow Dragon", stay away from that piece of shit), but they're not even in the same ballpark as Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn.
