There seems to be an outcry of epic fanboy perportions not being able to wrap their heads around why/how the 360 is selling so well... I've seen everything from claims that its soccer moms, to "america be da racizt against da weaboos" and everything in between... I don't see how that can be any more clear and apparent... Microsoft has created the complete console for gamers of every stripe... I will explain...
- Core gaming- slam dunk for a few reasons... the first is that normal every day core gamers want the very best games that are cutting edge in most catagories... Its no secret to any logical sane human being that the age of the multiplatform is not only here but its producing the very best games... Don't believe me, then check the recent gamespot awards, or sales, or community buzz... Multiplatform games are the norm and will increasingly become more saturated throughout the hobby and while yeah, the exclusive game will always carry some weight, especially when they sell as good as Halo, gears or Gran Tourismo, they no longer bare the weight they once did... mad? go pi$$ up a rope and deal with it.
- Microsoft created the desireable online service... yup, close your eyes and think of ALL THOSE THREADS, where some angry cow was complaining about the subscription fee to xbox live and how many times you sat back and thought, "it doesnt really bother me that much", ya see when they were **** about 4 dollars a month, microsoft was busy laying groundwork for creating the most comprehensive and complete console online experience for their customers.... yeah, I said it, ya see, its not just that xbox live offers more (though the two services are quite similar) its that all the little revisions and promotion and care for xbox live, with folks subscription money branded xbl as being THE online serice... meanwhile if youre a ps3 gamer youre enjoying some free multiplayer on the same tired, old and somewhat cold and uninviting UI that you have for years... Its not that ps3 is bad, its just not progressive and dynamic and full featured as xbl and THAT means more than an exclusive will in this day and age... Id even go as far as to say that sony not charging for its online service has near crippled the company moving forward and creating anything near as impressive as xbl...
- Kinect is not just a quick cash in on casuals (though its making its mark with them) but also its a functional aspect of xbox navigation and communication that not only seperates itself from the ps3, where voice chat and communication is laughable but also ensures a sense of forward and progressive thinking throughout the console. MS cars as much about the functional uses of kinect through the console as they do about the games themselves.
People want to be "plugged in" to whats cutting edge and whats hot and convienient and fun.... The Ipod isnt the best mp3 player on the market. It doesnt do anything magical, There are mp3 players that do more for less and are every bit as competant as an ipod, but Apple will always smoke everyone in this catagory because they sell the product that people are most "plugged in" to... The online services, the community and the connectivity with fellow gamers this generation are as important as the exclusives were in previous ones and microsoft has captured that. The ps3 isnt a bad console, its quite good, but its not the one that carries buzz and a forward progressive way of thinking... WHY the xbox 360 is so popular is simple, its a connection to core gamers, a connection to casuals and family gamers and a connection the very best in online gaming backed by the most comprehensive and impressive user interfaces in the medium.... so stop scratching your head when 360 has a big month and another ps3 exclusive sells like garbage. The 360 is the one thats "plugged in"
