So why didn't the EyeToy catch on?

A lot of Sony fanboys claim that Sony started the motion sensor thing with the EyeToy, and Nintendo came up with their own motion-based solution with the Wii, and of course the rest is history with the Wii being the best-selling console of this generation.

So what exactly went wrong with the EyeToy? Why didn't Sony introduce a 3D EyeToy to debut with the PS3 to compete with the Wii, and have a head start against Project Natal? It would've made perfect sense knowing that they were competing directly with XBox360 (and unworried about Wii).

Because the Eye Toy was an optional peripheral. It didn't see major success for the same reason the PSWand and Project Natal won't.

Because developers can't give a rats rear end about spending more development time on implementing it.

Besides, the Eye Toy was kind of experimental. On E3, while showing the wands, they mentioned how their experience with the Eye Toy has shown them that controllers are necessary to add a level of tangibility with what happens on the screen, basically you need something to hold and buttons to press in order to make interaction more accurate and realistic. That's what I think that Natal would eventually need to add something along the lines of the PS3 wand to really use the technology on real games.

Because as with all add ons you can't just release them and then let them stagnate, and the window of opportunity is small with them in my opinion. To date very few add ons have succeded for this reason. Eyetoy would fall into the catagory of it could have been cool if... Will Natal or the PS3's wand have success, only if they go at them full steam ahead will it work and then it's not a sure thing. Personally I think both "could" be amazing, and I'm really seeing potential with Natal that I hope pans out.

Consider the Wii, most considered it a gimmick, and lets just say it was. Nintendo really pushed there "gimmick" and look at the sales numbers it's had. And to be honest it accomplished them with a pretty terrible line up. It did so because people new Nintendo wasn't going to release it and forget about it....

but not this. we've no idea how they will sell or market the PS Wand thing or Natal. they could ship with future systems or even bundle with a highly-desired 1st party app. and in the case of Natal, it may do enough to sell itself like a WiiFit board. indeed, Natal could make something like WiiFit look silly in the right programmer's hands. idunno. it'll be interesting to see their approaches, and yes...most peripherals fail. but it's not a guarantee, and I'm not interested in pronouncing either dead before birth. but it's almost a guarantee they'll both get much more marketing $ than the Eye toy or 360 Vision Camera ever got. they won't be left out there to be blown by the wind. if you think they will allow that, you're not paying attention.

Won't argue with you there. Nonetheless, I wouldn't bet on the success of either Natal or the PSWand.

nor would I. "Success" is that oft illusive thing in the world of peripherals. But I do expect that they'll put enough money behind it to get them both a fighting chance in the market. I can't recall a single meaningful commercial dedicated to the Live Vision Camera or Eyetoy. As if they didn't care at all. But Natal and this Wand thing? I see $$$ pouring in for marketing. In the end, though, their future success is directly reliant upon the innovation they can really bring to the game space. what devs incorporate features. we'll see soon enough.

I think the balance board was the only real optional peripheral to be so popular. But that is because nintendo released wii fit with it.

The tech wasn't advanced enough to make it a viable alternative to traditional controls (except for minigames). Also, no one bought it.

EXACTLY.

Introducing peripherals midcycle just never catches on because DEVs cater to the INSTALL BASE, that's where the money is.

The Wii was launched with the tech, allowind devs to support it without worry of losing some customers.

This is the exact reason why Natal and Sony's latest effort won't catch on like the Wii.

Come to think of it, developers for Natal and PSWand would have to ALWAYS bring up "traditional or motion controls" when planning a new game. The Wii on the other hand, kinda supports both, at least more so than the other two. Hardcore gamers know when to use the GameCube Controller or Classic Controller, while casual gamers just need the Wiimote and maybe Nunchuk.

Natal and PSWand users need to buy the additional equipment which adds however many dollars to the existing price of their consoles. I wonder if anyone here who owns a Wii plans to purchase Natal and/or the PSWand. Such a living room would be a nightmare!
