Download Connection Speed: 18Mbps

So Today, I booted up my PS3 in order to play some games on it but I can't sign in to PSN. Oh look, the 4.0 Update.Hit Okay. Update. -----

30 Minutes Later. "Downloading update data .... 48%"

All I wanted to do is play some games online, and it is TAKING FOREVER!!!! and no its not my connection speed, I can download everything on the fly on my PC.

A graphics card driver update takes at most 3 minutes. A Windows update takes at most 2 minutes, Service Pack (which happens once every 2 years) update 10 minutes MAX. A random game update, I don't even notice.

Playstation 3 Update: An Hour+

Does Sony server suck? I'm thinking so.

Oh, and My PS3 is DMZ free, soo...explain? I thought consoles were suppose to be pop and play, yet it takes 10 times + longer for me to game then my PC.

You're far better off downloading the update onto your PC and then transferring it to your PS3. It shortens the time drastically. I hate downloading anything for my PS3.

Ah, yes I forgot about this, but seriously this should even be required. Consoles should be pop and go no? Why should I need to go through that "hassle" in order to play my console games faster? =(

despite everyone wanting to blame peoples ip there is some sort of serious bottleneck going on in there someplace.

even hardwire seems to make little difference.

the icing on the cake is that once the dl is done it freaking installs.

Their PSN updating system really does suck. Hopefully the guy who created the system finds a job in a another field.

It is frustrating. I have tried speeding up my PS3 connection over the years, but to no avail.

I hope that this is remedied with the PS4, and that the updates aren't as damn slow :P 360's are quick as all heck.

In imaginary "all hail Sony" land perhaps, in the real world 5mins is extremely rare with PS3 system updates, so rare in fact i cant remember a single update since the PS3 launch that didnt take atleast 15mins.

I'm on 22mb, with constant 2mb/sec+ download speeds on everything but PS3.

Yep. The ISP seems to be the go-to reasoning for this. I have no issues unless it's with the PS3 update system. My PC's download at anywhere up to 2MBps and my 360 downloads pretty damn quick as well.

Took me maybe 5 minutes to download 4.0. Sucks to be you. Funny how you go on to say it's way quicker playing pc games when you apparently have a steam profile, which would suggest you have to download 10,15gb of data before you can play. That's taken a hell of a lot longer for me to download than my ps3 updates....

I have 100mbps Internet connection and regularly download at 10MB a second on PC and using my PS3 on gigabit Ethernet still takes an excessive amount of time to download any updates from PSN. There is a bottleneck on PSN somewhere.

Yea something is very wrong with their system. PSN updates take 40+ mins. Xbox Live dashboard update took me literally 3 minutes.

What version are you using? WIndows 7 updates download in the background and installation only takes a minute maybe when you reboot your computer.

PS3 updates don't install in the background.

7, it's the install that takes time. I suppose it depends on what updates it's doing, but I'd say it takes around 15-20 minutes on average, which is slower than my ps3.

The connection speed with PSN is so inconsistent. Sometimes it's slow as hell and other times it's quite adequate.

Are you joking? Do you deny updates for a year at a time or something? The last Windows 7 updated I installed took maybe 60 seconds. Are you on like a 8+ year old computer or something?

Why are you using a crappy service provider, or just trying to bash Sony and the Ps3 at every waking moment?

My updates never take more than 15 minutes, and that's for the big one's like 4.0. Which i'm pretty sure it took me just a bit over 10 minutes for that one.

They usually take 5-10 minutes.

As for patches, those download very, very fast.

Just being honest. My 360, Wii, and PC don't take this long at all. The PS3 is still my prime console but I do bash on it when its a given.

There have been issues regarding the connection speed dating back close to the consoles release. When it's numerous people on the internet with differing ISPs and one company with which you download the updates, it kind of begs the question... Is it really the ISP?

I'm not saying the PS3 update downloads are slow for everyone, but it's quite possible that it could be the connection to Sony's servers. Much like when you download a file horrendously slow on your PC, it's typically the server you are downloading from. It could be an issue with the number of people accessing the content at the same time. Who knows?

Even if your isp isnt slow ps3 still updates slower than xbox360 because it has no install the update after downloading xbox360 install update as it's downloading.
