So why does the PS3 and 360 not include HDMI cables?

I've seen HDMI cables for as low as $10. MS used to include an HDMI cable with the Elite when it cost $400, but now they did like Sony and put those crappy red/white/yellow cables in.

I find it ridiculous that both these consoles that are capable of producing such amazing looking games, aren't even capable of high def gaming right out of the box. They could include a cheap HDMI cable, or at the very least, even just the component (red, green, blue) cable. Sony has NEVER included anything other than the AV cables, which are only capable of 480i output.

And yes, I'm sure some will just say "oh, you can just buy an HDMI cable really cheap. No big deal."

But that's the thing, since some HDMI cables are cheap, (the one I use for my 360 cost $10, the one I use on my PS3 cost $20) that's exactly why I think they should be included with these consoles. Agree?

I agree. HDMI cables should be included. It's annoying not having essential cables out the box especially considering that the 360 and PS3 are passed off as HD consoles.

Its simple really, they want you to buy the "official" HDMI cord for each console, which is overpriced (from my memory, anyhow). But really, it would be nice to have HDMI cords packaged with the consoles.

Because most people do not have HDTV's and would have no need for them. Even at $10 (probably less), that saves Sony/Microsoft a lot of money.

Half the games this gen aren't in HD on both systems, that is FACT. Need a list, here it is:

http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241

But a lot more games are doing 720p nowadays so it would make sense to have HDMI cables.

It's because not everyone has a HDTV, so packaging a HDMI cable instead of the RCA cables would be useless to some. And it lowers costs.

Yeah, it'd be nice of em to throw it in. Kind of a moot point for System Wars though, since neither one gives you HD cables, there's no ownage to be had. I got my HDMI from cablesforless.com for under $5. Newegg.com is a good place for cables too.

It would be nice if they had HDMI cables. I managed to get the Elite back when it came out so I have that HDMI cable. When I got my PS3 Slim when it came out I was rather disappointed it didn't have an HDMI cable but that wasn't a killer since I already had one. Now I just swap the cables in the back when I'm using them. Luckily my monitor also came with a cable for my PC. :p

They should, but I`m not too bothered by it as you can get good cables for $3. HDMI-based DVD players, old HD-DVD players, and Blu-ray players don`t include HDMI cables either - all the better to gouge the unknowing consumer at an electronics store.

Not everyone has an HDTV, so they give you a choice of buying either a HDMI cable or a component cable. Think of it as having a choice of what you want to buy. An HDMI cable at most will cost you $4 at monoprice

Let's say including the cables costs them $2 each. Multiply that by a few million then add the sales from the offical cables and see how much that saves them. Video game consoles are one of the few products that sells at a lost, so theres nothing wrong with trying to cut a few corners for extra cash.

They should at the least include component cables. Even if you don't have an HDTV I believe you can still connect them (just not the blue and green plugs) to the standard AV plug.

My old school 360 came with component cables. My new PS3 came only with AV cables, so I bought some component cables for it. Guess what? PS3 won't output 5.1 channel sound with component! It forces it to 2 channels. So I had to go buy an optical cable for sound! (I didn't go HDMI because my receiver does not support it).

EDIT: Also, these cables and display resolutions, casual gamers and new gamers have trouble understanding them. My friend thought he was playing in HD with regular AV cables. This is another reason they need to include these cables with the systems. Not everyone follows technology and gaming closely.

Not everyone owns an HDTV. The company only has to provide enough cables to make it usable. Since composite is standard, they put those.

Since when does 5.1 sound output from a component cable ? You need either an optical cable or HDMI

GTSaiyanjin2

You can get 5.1 surround from standard stereo cables. You do, however, need optical or HDMI for higher-quality audio formats.

Then why did MS include just an HDMI cable with the Elite when it cost $400? Why did the Pro only come with component cables when it was still being produced? The Arcade is the only 360 that even came with AV cables before the Elite dropped to $300.

No you can't. That makes no sense. You can't take 2 channels of sound and create 6 channels (5 plus the .1). You CAN have an amplifier that takes stereo and puts it through Dolby Pro Logic, but that's not real surround sound. That just groups wave frequency ranges together to give it a surround sound effect.. though it doesn't work well.

... wut... the Pro had the composite/component combo that had the switch on it. They offered MORE than what they needed to, but anything beyond composite is unnecessary on their part. Yes the elite had an HDMI cord but I'm 100% sure they also had the composite cables with it, otherwise those who bought it without an HDTV couldn't play it.Like I said though, they don't need to add one in the bundle. I didn't say they DIDN'T put an HDMI cable, I just said they DID put the composites. No need to get mad and upset about everything when I was simply just stating why they do what they do.

95% of the games aren't even in 1080p, so it really doesn't matter. Also, the majority doesn't have an HDTV, so why up the production costs for a minority?

It is assumed that people who buy HD consoles have HDTVs to begin with. Imagine buying a new Alienware gaming PC and finding out it ships with a vga cable because "not everyone has HD computer monitors".

That's a terrible comparison. People who buy Alienware computers are extremely stupid to start off with, and the cables come with the video card anyways. Most people who own a console don't have an HDTV.

Both consoles calling themselves HD should have always included component cables. Xbox 360's did until a few months ago, and really should still include them. PS3s have always had just 3 cable A/V cables just like the PS2s had.

Totally agree. I don't care how cheap these cables are. When you advertise your products ability to display content in HD, then it is just stupid to not include them in the box. I have an original Elite so it never effected me with my 360, but I think Sony was really cheap about it. Not even component, and they brag about blu ray play back? It's fail by both companies.

Maybe, after some market research, they determined that less than 5% of their respective customers have/use an HDMI-ready monitor, so they probably don't include them as a cost-cutting measure...
